I had a good gaming year this year, when I take into consideration that I didn't have a real job for most of it. Plenty of good releases, and I've also been taking in older games I'd never played before.

Horrible year in gaming.
Old Dreamcast, PSX (S)NES, GB/c/a games are more enjoyable than most PC games released this year.(whenever I had a choice between playing PSX/DC games and new PC releases, I'd play the PC release for 15-30 minutes before uninstalling and moving back to my PSX/DC games)
Only Ninja Gaiden 2 and Mass Effect are this year's "must buy" games for me, and I'm not even going to buy them this year.

I think 2007 was one of those freakishly prolific years that comes around every ten years or so, and 2008 was basically trying to replicate that, but taking all things into account I wouldn't call 2008 a bad year in gaming.

I'd call it a....less awesome year in gaming.

I dont really think 2008 was the greatest year for PC gaming. My Xbox seemed to do ok for games this year, but nothing really came out for PC that I honesly wanted to get. Nothing seemed to suck me in in that regard.

Hoping Diablo 3 will change that, but thats still too far off to get too worked up over. =(
I think it was a great year for PC Gaming, far from perfect but it was pretty damn good.

My highlights were Left 4 Dead (Well worth the wait), World of Goo, and Fallout 3.
I dunno maybe its just a differnece of opinion. I've never been much of a fan of the zombie stuff so I wasnt really drawn to Left 4 Dead, and as for Fallout 3...well I never actually played 1 or 2 so I didn't grab 3.

The important part is that someone enjoyed the year, i'm happy for ya =D

won't call it a bad year in gaming, but a mostly generic year in gaming. generic is not always bad. ofcourse i only play pc games, so i dunno about mirror's edge and stuff. personally i think that only ubisoft tries anything new nowadays, i mean assassin's creed, far cry 2 and prince of persia. i dunno about mirror's edge, but i think yahtzee is prolly right about its platforming, there is a reason why most platformers are third person. the game might be a bunny hoppers wet dream come alive, but i really don't think it will be as good as running around in assassin's creed felt.

I hope none of you guys rip me a new one for saying this, but even the big games that came out this year were just eh. GTA 4 was good at first but after the game tried to make me watch tv in game and the game just got so boring I wanted to do my home work it just didn't have lasting appeal. Fall out wasn't that great the open world just doesn't go well with guns, and the setting is just too sparsely settled. I only played for an hour and I hated it. However Saints 2, left for dead, RB 2, GH WT are pretty much the only stuff worth owning in my opinion, but you kno wat ppl say about opinions lol

Actually i heard every so often that 2007 wasn't a very good year for gaming. (Except for maybe Halo 3)

This year: Gears 2, Dead Space (Dead Space Downfall wasn't bad either), and even though not many people liked it: Red Alert 3.

This year has basically been about games with 2 or 3 on the end of them. E.g. Fallout 3, Gears 2, Red Alert 3, Fable 2, etc.

Last year a lot of the releases were shooters and even those that weren't primarily shooters had a lot of shooter elements to them (Mass Effect).

This year, we've gotten a lot more varied titles: Little Big Planet, Braid, World of Goo, Wario Shake, Fable II, Wipeout HD, Rock Band 2 and a lot of others.

I'd say 08 was a better year than 07 at least. Not 98, but nothing so far has even come close to the gaming year of 98.

I'd say 08 was the year of the sequal, but most of them were surprisingly good.

And Halo 3 is not good. I just had to say it.

This year was a good year in games for sure. I realy enjoyed Gears 2 and Left4Dead. Am I the only one that thinks LittleBitPlanet was some overhyped queer looking platformer? Honestly. I sat down and played it. I can't do it. its a PLATFORMER, a SIDE SCROLLING platformer. I had more fun with XBL arecade then I did with LBP. Metal Gear was never really my type of game. Dispite it though It was a good year for games.

Bethesda Games dont require past knowledge of the series to enjoy it, i've never played a Fallout game before and I really enjoyed it.

Dead Space was a great game and so was Fable 2 (even though it once again did not live up to the hype)

i do agree, but thats probably just because im a retro gamer at heart, i enjoy great storytelling and innovative gameplay, which sadly not alot of games has delivered in the last couple of years, for example, the GOTY awards on GT for innovative gameplay had 2 titels out of about 5 that were actually innovative, and those were Mirror's Edge and LBP, and yeah, those are innovative when it comes to gameplay and customization, but the rest on that list wasnt innovative at all, for example, Left 4 Dead...what's innovative about that?, 4 player Co-op fighting hordes of enemies in a fast paced shoot 'em up, seems innovative at first glance, but not for me who played Serious Sam (First and Second Encounter) back in the day, and that was released back in 2001, so the concept is very old for Left 4 Dead.
