Fuck yeah I can bake. I usually like to make up some potato bread, and I make a killer apple tart. But for the holidays nothing beats cinnamon brioche and coffee... To be fair I'm a chef by trade.

When I bake a cake without following a recipe(I'm hardcore like that),the end result is always a fugly ass "thing" with the same density as concrete, but the flexibility of rubber.
It looks like crap, feels like crap, but it's so good!
You just need to close your eyes and picture a real cake.

I can bake, but I don't especially care to. However, I'm a good cook and quite happy to do that, as long as I'm not stuck doing it every night. The difference here is that cooking, when you know what you're doing, is more art than science, while baking is more science than art. With baking, you're looking for a specific, complicated chemical reaction that has a lot of tedious steps involved, whereas with cooking, you're pretty much just throwing stuff into a pot until it tastes good. I find one of these a whole lot less boring than the other.

So, I'm currently in the middle of crafting the most thoroughly bitchin' cinnamon rolls in existence (I know, because I made them last year, and they kicked ass). I'm in the "wait for the dough to rise" phase. They are shaping up to be my new favorite part of Christmas morning, if they wind up as good as last time.

But that's enough about me. The point of this thread is to ask the question in the title: Do you bake? How often? What is your favorite baked good, either to make or to eat?

At its core, this thread is about things that are baked, and the people who bake them. Discuss.

Edit: So, my cinnamon rolls didn't rise. Apparently, I killed the yeast. I admit, I'm not actually that good a baker. But dammit, I am not about to let a bunch of pansy-ass fungus end my quest for awesome breakfast tomorrow! I will prevail! Manly Bakers don't give up.

I'm a bit of an unusual case, being a teenaged boy who loves baking, but I bake regularly, mostly of cakes of the sweet variety.

-snip-

Also, as a little side note, I hate ready-bake cakes, the ones where it's just a powder which you add water/milk to and it's good to go. Takes all the fun out of the baking, and I've never tasted a ready-bake cake which can stand toe-to-toe with a cake made from fresh ingredients and every part made by hand.
I was the same as a teenager, now i have a crappy oven that can't keep temperature right so i dont bake anymore.

Definatly agree with starting from scratch is better than packet cakes

Yes.
I hate doing it, but when I do it, it turns out well.
Same thing as with cooking in general for me.

I tend to let my wife handle desserts (I do virtually all other cooking, though.) I make pretty good peanut butter cookies, coconut macaroons, and creme brulee, though.

In non-dessert baking, I've also been known to make pizza dough, naan, pita bread, and dinner rolls. Owning a bread machine makes several of these things somewhat easier- the machine can handle the dough and its rising cycles, and then one just has to take it out and shape, cut, roll, or bake as apropriate.
