One of the cardinal sins involved in creating a fighting game is crafting characters that are just plain overpowered, and I'm not talking about the bosses. Even though it seems every single fighting game nowadays can't go on without a bullshit final fight, that's not the subject for today. That's been done to death.

I'm talking about the fighters that you can actually play. I'm talking about the characters who are just plain unbalanced.

<color=blue>Which ones really get on your nerves?

I've got plenty. First, I'll refer to Street Fighter IV. Two characters who come to mind are Sagat and Abel, both of whom have earned my eternal ire. Well, maybe not Sagat. He's overpowered, yes, but in comparison to Abel, he's fair. Who the hell gives a grappling-based character (Abel) a quick-as-fuck roll towards his opponent, a roll that makes him invulnerable to everything except a grab, and an unblockable throw? I call "bullshit."

Second, I'd like to point out a couple of assholes in Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom. Being that I've never played a Vs. title before this one, I expect I'll get my ass handed to me on the highest difficulty by most characters. Ippastuman and Morrigan in particular can fuck me sideways 'til I feel the hot oven mitts of hatred smother me. However, from what I can tell, they're not unbalanced so much as just plain good.

The people who do strike me as ingloriously cheap are Gold Lightan and Saki. I hate them both with a fiery passion, the former because of his dominance of close combat (you know, that one thing around which the entire fucking game is based), and the latter because of her cheap laser-cannon-and-grenade-and-super-laser-blast defense shield that is just a little too impenetrable for my liking.

One of my friends says Wario from SSBB is a cheap POS. I disagreed...until my friends and I shot a video of this match:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCAWwT2lAEk

That should link to the video. One specific point made my jaw drop, and I never looked at Wario the same again.

Christie and Eddy from Tekken seem to be really cheesy with their constant spin kicks that have ridiculous priority, range, and hitboxes. Yes, their combos are somewhat hard to pull off if you haven't drilled with them in practice mode for a while, but still. There's one cartwheel in particular that you can just do over and over, which will always hit you on the ground, even if you roll sideways.

Tira, I think is her name. The girl from Soul Calibur 4 who uses a bladed hula hoop as a weapon. She has some of the cheapest attacks I've ever seen in gaming. Which, of course, leads to my girlfriend using no other character but hoopgirl...

Raphael and Talim from Soul Calibur, just too fast and annoying for my liking. Constant mashing buttons with either of them seems to win people matches, even if I'm using someone I'm good with against them. Not to mention the CPU is just plain lame when controlling them. (I know, I know, I'm just not playing against them right or some bs)

I remember King from tekken, had melee moves you could string together if you learn it down well enough. Of course on harder difficulties, this meant if the computer grabs you once 3/4 of your health is gone. RAGE!

I fucking hate Tira. I lost to a button masher in Soul Calibur IV who insisted on using her. Damn her, damn the button masher, and damn me for losing to a button masher.

Oh, I just remembered another fighter that pisses me off. Alisa Boskonovich from Tekken 6 angers me to no end. Allow me to explain.

The other fighters have a distinct style. Even if you don't know all their moves, you can detect a pattern to their movements. Even Baek has a pattern (even if I can't fucking find it). Alisa does not. Alisa has no such pattern. If you want to fight her effectively, you have to learn every single damn move. Damn her.

Hard to say. The most overpowered characters that come to mind are unplayable bosses. I'm also not about to mistake "person I have trouble fighting" for "unbalanced." I can't for the life of me beat my friend's Lee in Tekken 5: DR, other than maybe once every so often with Armor King. Doesn't mean Lee is broken.

Was it a different match?

Well I've never played SSB besides the original, but I'd have to say the worst character-balance I've ever seen is on Street Fighter IV. Capcom just thought "Fuck it, we'll pander to the fanboys" and hyped the hell out of the Shoto-clones (Ken, Ryu, Akuma, Gouken, Dan and Sagat - Yes Sagat, he has the same command inputs as the rest of them but just calls them different names and has longer range) while horrendously crippling less popular characters like Fei Long.

I seriously found myself wishing SFIV had come out before Soul Calibur IV (In my opinion, a much more balanced and diverse fighting game) so Street Fighter could have it's players stolen instead.

Nononononono.... Dan should be removed from that list. He is awful.

I didn't mean Dan was good, he just has the same command inputs, and can be reasonable in the hands of a Shotoclone player simply because he's just a poor man's Ryu.

The poorest man's Ryu :p

I agree though... why make so many characters based off the same move set anyway? That's just fucking lazy.

Check the comments, specifically mine. Maybe Wario was designed like that, but i think he's busted.

Those two overpowered? HA! Tekkaman Blade,Zero,Karas,Kaijin no Soki are overpowered. Saki isn't overpowered but she has the best anti air defense. Golden Lightan and PTX-40A are just ARGH!

Wolf rolled off the ledge into that. You'd have gotten the same result with Kirby, Dedede, or Yoshi.
