After finally completeing Planescape Torment. I desided to try and play the Baldur's Gate series, especially after hearing so much praise for the second. However while playing Baldur's Gate 1 I'm just finding it to be non-stop grind-happy combat. Now my question is this: Is it worth slogging through all this combat? Should I contiue with Baldur's Gate 1 or should I just go straight on to the sequel?

Go on with it!

It gets better really.

Once you beat Emmett Brown you will notice it picking up.

It gets so much bloody better.
The characters, the enviroments, the storytelling...
Believe me, going through the whole saga with one character is the most satisfying thing to come out of the RPG genre since Diablo's combat system.

Baldur's Gate 2 and Planescape: Torment are the only infinity engine games that I have played all the way through. I would rather replay one of them again than try BG1, the expansions or an Icewind Dale game again. I only enjoy the combat in infinity engine games so much. If those games were remade with the Temple of Elemental Evil engine then I might be tempted.

For me, once you get into Baldurs Gate itself (Chapter 5 iirc) it gets really good. I might have to play through it again now....

TBH though, i much prefer BG2. But yeah, as another poster said, playing through the whole series with a single character is pretty epic.
