Baldur's Gate I or II?

It follows on.
You're imprisoned in the beggining of BG2.
You wont know why if you dont play BG1
You wont know who your partners are
Or why the f**k Minsc has a hamster. ( Its an allmighty miniature giant space hamster )
Or what happened to the druids wife

For these reasons, Baldur's Gate 2 is one of the very few games where playing the first one in the series really makes the second one so much better.

Note: It's the druid's husband that had bad things happen to him. The druid is Jaheira, and you can totally play on her insecurities about her husband and her feelings towards you while flirting with the (also insecure) winged elf who no longer has wings. Yes, Baldur's Gate II is that awesome.

Also Note: Minsc and Boo (his hamster) are perhaps the greatest video game human/hamster duo ever. ("Go for the eyes, Boo!")

the stories carry over, but I never finished BG1. HOWEVER; your CHARACHTERS carry over in BG2. so you deck em' out in bg1, you keep all that stuff for bg2. There are also mods where you can run the bg1 game on the bg2 engine, allowing you to start as a level 1 sorcerer.

Sorcery is awesome, btw.

If you do get with Aerie (aforementioned no-longer-winged Elf) she has some great dialogue during Throne of Bhaal.
