The Baldur's Gate Saga and Baby Tea:

Anyone who knows me even a bit on these forums, knows one thing: I freaking love Baldur's Gate. I admit it freely and regularly, I am trying to convince my wife to let us name our future daughter 'Imoen', and I even attempted a piece of fan fiction that depicted my play-through of the entire game (Which failed, due to it's huge scope and my inability to keep up with writing as well as my work schedule)

It was that last failure (Since I didn't get too far) that got me thinking about this attempt. I've never done a 'Let's Play' before, and have only seen 1 or 2 in my time, but seeing as I have a week off, and just got my old nice monitor back from my brother (Which means I can play on that instead of the 10" screen on my netbook), I'd like to attempt an LP for Baldur's Gate. Perhaps, at least, just the first chapter.

So here I will post the opening part of my attempt, a small sample, if you will, and see what the feedback is. If people are interested, then I'll continue to the end of Chapter 1 and see what happens then. If the interest is low, or zero, then I'll write this off and think of something else to do on my week off (Maybe some more crazy reviews or something).

Fair enough? Let's give it a go:

Introductions and Prologue:

I own Baldur's Gate, its expansion pack 'Tales of the Sword Coast', its sequel Baldur's Gate 2, and the sequel's expansion pack 'Throne of Bhaal'. And I have all of these combined into 1 super game using the BGT MOD. This means I'm playing BG1 using the BG2 engine, with BG2 assets (Like races, character classes, and class kits. Yes, I can be a sorcerer in BG1. It's awesome. This also means the switch from BG1 to BG2 is seamless. So I never stop playing, right until the end of Throne of Bhaal.

I'm also using the widescreen MOD, which means I'm playing the Baldur's Gate Saga in delicious 1440x900 resolution. A huge leap from the original 640x480 of the original, and the 1024x768 of BG2. This is all good news for you, the read, because the screens will be big and clear (You might have to open them in a new tab/window in order to get full detail), and there is more content to enjoy.

The Character:
I've decided to pick a character I haven't played before. This will make the game fresh for everyone involved, including me!
I have chosen a half-elf Shapeshifter druid named Tanus:

The stats aren't incredible, but they'll work.
The thing about the shapeshifter druid, for those unfamiliar, is that I get to shape-change into a werewolf! It's pretty great, and is pretty powerful for level 1. But the problem is that I cannot wear any armor, at all. I also cannot cast my priest spell while shape-changed, so I'm either an unarmored spell caster, or a half-decent fighter (But not nearly as good as a full fighter. I won't see big benefits until I'm level 14 with my 'Greater werewolf' ability, and that's a long way off. So this will be interesting.

The Prologue:
Behold! Candlekeep in huge resolution!

Here is a map of the whole keep:

So here we are, ready to rock and roll in Candlekeep.
There is little in the way of story here. This is the tutorial level, really. The only 'story' you'll get here is that you were raised here as an orphan by Gorion, a powerful wizard. Imoen, your childhood friend, also lives here with you. Gorion has got you up and told you that you must get ready to leave, so the point of this level is to learn to play and leave with Gorion.

I have the prologue memorized, so I fly through it. The best stuff is just afterwards anyways. I will say, however, that using the shapeshifter druid, I had some fun with the mini-quests you collect in the prologue:
Dang! My strength is too low to bash this lock open! Even when bashed a million times!

Well, let's try it as a werewolf!

Well that was MUCH easier.
By Moradin's Hammer! Killing rats has never been easier!

Like I said, I know it off by heart and I just fly through it. Here is me, in need of a shave, finally saying 'let's go' to Gorion:

Gorion gives me the orders that, if anything should happen to him, I should travel to the 'Friendly Arm Inn' to meet his friend Khalid and Jahiera. We leave the keep, and night falls. As we travel through the woods, our party is ambushed in a scene that I can quote entirely in my sleep, and have forever etched in my brain:

After the brief cutscene, where Gorion is cut down by the armored man, Tanus stands ready, but fatigued, on the road the next morning when Imoen rushes up and says she saw everything. She followed Tanus and Gorion, and wants to help find Khalid and Jahiera. Since the keep has, as they say, very draconian entry rules (You need to supply a rare book for the great library if you want entrance), going back isn't an option.

And so, to the Friendly Arm!

That's it for the first part! If people are interested, I'll post more as I play!
Any and all feedback is welcome, as it's only through feedback that I'll be continuing, or stopping, this endeavor!

Part 2: The Road to the Friendly Arm
Part 3: Gear, quests, levels, and Beregost
Part 4: Spiders! A Talking Chicken! Zombies! A Witch! An Angry Father! Levels! And Nashkel!
Part 5: The Mines of Nashkel
Part 6: Quest Cleanup and Searching for a Purpose
Part 7: Dying, Bandits, tombs, and Exploring...not in that order

NOTE:
Due to a saved game corruption, and a subsequent reinstallation of BGT, I have completely lost all my saved games. That includes this LP, as well as all my other characters. Dang it. My bad-ass fighter-mage, my LP druid, and my many, many others...just disappeared in a puff of digital smoke.
*sigh*

So, the LP will not continue.
Thank to those who have been reading, and those who commented, offering advice on my first 'Let's Play'.
It was fun.

Well, it's good to see that you chose a worthy game for your first "let's play". The BGT mod is pretty great, I soloed BG1 with a Kensai, how about that?

Looking forward to seeing how you proceed through the game, since I've pretty much got a set path in which order I'll do the different quests, and I'm wondering what you're gonna do first. Good luck, say high to that goddamned Friendly Arms Inn Mage for me.

I have never played Baldur's Gate *Raises flame shield and cowers* but this looks interesting. I might have to pick this up, if I ever get a better PC.

The only reason why Officio Assasinorum has not yet been contacted is because you bookmarked this thread. Repent by watching this LP and perhaps the Emperor will smile upon you yet.

Also, Baby Tea, what is your stance on polygamy? I got a ring here somewhere....

Anyways, OT:

Great! Nice too see how you plan on playing this.

Will you by any chance plan to take Edwin with you, or go with the Boo-combo? Or something else?

I must admit, it has been a while since I last fired up my copies of the BG-saga. Thig out to brighten my days for the summer when I come home from toiling at work.

Keep on going!

To be honest: I'm playing this on a Netbook.
1.6 Ghz, 2 gigs of RAM, Windows Vista (Terrible on a netbook)...at 1440x900. Zero frame drops.
This thing would probably run fine on an 800 Mhz with 512Mb of Ram and Windows XP.
Glad to see some interest, though!

Baldur's Gate will run on a Pentium 166 with Windows 98.

It is all but impossible to have a computer which cannot run it without it actually being an abacus.

Thread is being bookmarked as we speak.
I've always enjoyed text LP's more than their video companions anyway.

Those sound awesome, where did you find those mods? I've been feeling the longing to do another player-through lately and those look like they greatly improve the experience.

They work awesome.
It takes a bit of setting up, but it's absolutely worth it.
Here is the BGT mod: http://www.spellholdstudios.net/ie/bgt
And the widescreen: http://www.gibberlings3.net/readmes/readme-widescreen.html

The biggest problem is that you only have music in BG2.
No battle, background, or boss music is avilable in BG1.
It was really annoyed with that at first, but I got over it when I saw my dual-wielding Kensai kill the assassins in Candlekeep. Plus, as soon as you step foot in BG2, it's music galore! And I always thought BG2 had a better soundtrack anyways.

Enjoy it!

Oooh cools, I've not played the BG saga for quite a few years now(hell, Im only just getting to play NWN2 and its expansions for the first time, no spoilers please), but seeing Candlekeep looking so shiny has me interested.

I second the request for a link to those mods, I think Ill have a crack at the game once my new monitor arrives.

EDIT: Bah, ninja'd! :p Cheers for the links, and Im looking forward to the rest if you have time.

Dude, that sounds absolutely awesome. BG2's engine was better than BG1 in so many ways, I'd love to play it with that way.

JEBWrench said:
I've heard about Tutu. Does BG2 have significantly better gameplay than BG1?
See above statement. It's one of the few games where the sequel is better than the original in every way. Which is a feat, because BG1 was a really good game.

You could use BG1Tutu instead. It does the same as the BGT mod, except you get to keep all the sounds, but you'll have to import your savegame to BG2 manually, and install an extra mod that fixes this thing where BG1Tutu turns all the water green.

Well, actually it uses a BG and BG2 installation to create a BG installation with BG2s engine instead. Other than the green water thing, it's great.

Well, in light of some positive feedback, plus since I can't stop playing the game because it's so freaking awesome, I've decided to post a small continuation of the play-through! I'll be doing this, at first at least, in small segments. I'll be updating the OP with links to the new parts as the become available! And, for the record, I'm playing this game on the hardcore, official D&D rules.
So, let's go forward with:

Part 2 - The Road to the Friendly Arm
We last left our hero Tanus, and his companion Imoen, on the side of the road, the morning after the attack on Gorion. Tanus was fatigued, so I decided to take a rest. Anyone who has played the BG saga knows that resting isn't always safe, as seen here:
Thankfully, Imoen 'one-shot'ed it with a well placed arrow!

Now, before I continue: Loot is a very important part of BG. It's not as emphasized as, say, Diablo, but what you wear, what you use, and what you drink and throw are extremely important, obviously. So, I'll be providing a loot update for those who are interested in that part of the game. Those who just want to see the playthrough can ignore it (Since it'll be in spoiler tags).

Here is what I started with:

Tanus:
Helmet (Bought at Winthrop's)
Quarterstaff (Started with it)
4 Healing potions (Acquired during prologue)

Imoen:
120 Arrows (3 stacks of 40 - Extras Bought during Prologue)
Studded Leather Armor (Bought during prologue)
Short Bow
2 Healing potions
Speed Potion
Magic Missile Wand - 10 Shots

Extras:
Armor Scroll
Infravision Scroll
Dagger +1 (Acquired during prologue - Not identified)

After a successful rest, I worked my way north to pay my respects to Gorion.
And by that I mean loot his dead body.
2 gems
2 Morningstars
1 Dagger
1 Scroll/letter

After desecrating the body of my dead foster father, I found on his (dead) person a scroll! It was long winded and boring and from a guy named E. Basically, it said: Dear Gorion. Get the heck out of Dodge. The bad guys are coming for your foster son. Your pal, E. Since this game was made years before Entourage ever came to air, we can assume it isn't Eric Murphy....or can we?

Whatever.

I worked my way east to find a messenger! But, more importantly, a wolf!
Hey there Mr Pooch! Want a hug?

As it turns out, he did NOT want a hug. I hit him with a Doom spell to make him miss a lot, and Imoen started raining arrows on him. I queued up for Tanus to shapechange, and of course the wolf went for Imoen. Doom seemed to do nothing, though since she took a massive hit that brought her to 1 HP. I moved her back and the wolf went for Tanus, who then officially shapechanged. We then made very short work of the wolf.

If you look right next to Imoen, you can see in the tree a small blue thing? That's the game telling me there is a container there. In this case, a hole in the tree! I looked inside and lo and behold! A diamond! That'll get me some dough! Worth the healing potion I had to use on Imoen, that's for sure!

-1 Healing potion
+1 Diamond

We then hit the edge of the map, and brought up the world map:

No, it's not that small. It's actually quite large.
You can pan it all around, and includes the complete map from BG2 in there as well, making it freaking huge.

Ahh! There is the Friendly Arm! We first must head west, then we can head north to the Friendly Arm!
So, westward ho!

After an 8 hour journey (I swear, everything is 8 hours from everything in this game), we arrived late in the night. We must be near some senior citizen home, because we are immediately accosted by an elderly man.

He asks us if we're desperate or deranged.
That makes sense.

After he tottles off, Imoen and Tanus take a quick stroll to the north a small ways to find a hollow rock!

Hurray! More loot!
Just as I grab the ring inside, I hear the howling of wolves.

For those counting, that's 2 wolves and 1 dire wolf.
I'm a level 1 druid, and my partner is a level 1 thief. Hardcore D&D rules.
This doesn't look good.

I had Imoen alternating shots with her bow and the magic missile wand, while Tanus just had to suck it up and be the tank. 3 healing potions, 3 magic missile shots, and a bunch of arrows later, we actually freaking won!

...because they are dining in hell now!
+1 ring - unidentified
-3 healing potions
Magic Missile Wand: -3 shots - 7 remaining.

I worked my way back to the road, and followed it north until I could finally see the sign!

It was at this point I realized something: I totally forgot Monaron adn Xzar. Two evil characters that are usually the first extra members of your party. They are found in that first area where you start. You know, where Gorion died. Now I have to go back and get them??
Nope. Screw that. As funny as Xzar can be, I'm not going back for them

I head north instead and arrive at the Friendly Arm!
I would head straight in, but I had to go get a special, hidden ring from a certain tree right outside the gate.

You can see the blue indicator right next to Tanus

Now, all I have to do it head inside and meet my two friends!
Except I'm stopped by this guy who acts like my best friend, but really wants to screw me over for money. Kind of like and H&R Block employee. But by 'screw me over' I mean kill me with magic and pain...for money. So only slightly worse then an H&R Block employee.
This can actually be quite the fight. Tarnesh immediately uses 'mirror image', which makes him neigh-on impossible to hit until you get rid of all the mirrored images. And while you're busy with that, he just launches spells at you. It can be hard. I, however, lucked out!
One of my swings hit him, instead of the mirrored image. It doesn't happen often, but it can happen. And, because I was shape-changed, it was a one-swipe kill! It was a good ting I got him when I did, too, because you can see in the information box in that screen-cap that he just finished casting horror. And I failed my savings throw. What does that mean? That means this:
I just run around scared, unable to do anything, for a short period of time. Of course, since he's dead already, I just look like an idiot. Dang it! I want to be a cool werewolf! Not a...twilight werewolf or something (Ohh! pop-culture burn!).

After that wore off, I made my way inside, heard some tales about how bandits are getting really bad in the region (Hello Mr. Foreshadowing! How are you tomorrow?), and finally ran into my two companions:

On the Next Update:
New gear, new companions, Friendly Arm Quests, and Beregost!

Any and all feedback is welcomed and appreciated!
This is my first LP, so criticisms as well as compliments are wanted!
How can I improve?
What am I doing right?
Let me know!

This is a pretty interesting thing, BT! I'm liking it so far. Even though I'm in the same boat as Macgyvercas up there...
You've made it pretty easy to follow your progress[footnote]at least, I think so...[/footnote].
Plus, the images and descriptions of what you're doing are often and detailed. Big positive there.

I was thinking about trying something like this myself, although done from a more first-person sort of perspective as Carthane, the name I *always* use in Baldur's Gate, makes his journey from humble home in Candlekeep to the very Throne of Bhall in his climactic finale.

But alas, I am lazy, so it will likely never come to be.

That said, I actually much prefer the BG1 Tutu mod over BGT, simply because the Tutu mod doesn't actually change anything about the original game aside from those improvements made to the engine by the second game. I like the original portraits and music far too much to let em slip away, and having to manually import my characters from one game to the next isn't enough trouble to be worth losing the originals games sense of style.

I'm also a huge fan of the BG1 Banter Pack mod. Downloadable HERE! It adds a whole slew of new dialogue into the game that's well enough written you'd never know it was a mod unless you're like me and you've played through the series both with and without mods enough times to have it all memorized. For example it actually *gasp* adds dialogue for Imoen, making her seem much more akin to her BG2 self although slightly less, ya know, traumatized and tortured, but that's besides the point.

Damn I love this series. Keep up the Let's Play, I'm curious to see how you'll play through the game and what paths you'll take, plus despite having played the game dozens of times now, I've yet to have played as a druid myself, generally leave that to Jaheira!

Are the new portraits (especially the one for Imoen) part of the BGT mod? I've only used Tutu before, but BGT sounds like it might be a better choice if it truly combines the two games.

And dammit, you've revived my desire to play this game *again*. It's been barely five months since I last played through the games. Ah, Bioware/Black Isle. I am slaves to your games.

This LP is great though, bookmarked and will be waiting for the next update.

The only thing changed is the music.
The custom portraits you're seeing are my own doing, not from BGT.
Otherwise, everything else is exactly the same. I do miss battle music a bit, but the seamless integration of the sequel and the expansion packs is more then worth it. And the music is fine in BG2, so once you get to that point, it's like nothing has changed at all.

I used Tutu for a while, but I decided to give BGT a try and I haven't looked back.
But, to be fair, it's totally a preference thing. Both MODs are excellent.
