Sounds like a Bauhaus fanboy singing for a cliched nu-metal band

The father's of techno.
I'm guessing you've never heard of Kraftwerk?
Sigh yes and theres alot of other stuff out before I know, maybe father's is an overstatement, how about pretty damn influential to modern electronic music, along with 808 state, and New order and a whole load of other stuff. Happy now?
If you like all those guys so much, you should listen to Juno Reactor. Pretty influential in their own right, and pretty awesome.

I learned about that Jonathan Coulton chap recently. He's pretty good. Not technically a band, but still relevant I reckon.

Well, most of the bands I learned about this year have a song in one of the Guitar Hero games. The best one I've heard so far is from An Endless Sporadic, but the only song I've heard from them is Impulse, so that could change.

And I've just listened to some more of their songs; yeah, they're decent across the board. That's good. I don't like one-hit-wonder bands. They're also a fairly new band, which explains the fact that they don't have as many songs as I thought they did.

Looking through my iTunes library, the bands that I like most that I've first come across this year are Andrew Bird, Apostle of Hustle, Bedroom Walls, Beirut, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Jeffrey Lewis, Portugal. The Man, Red Sparowes, and the SSRIs. I kind of have eclectic taste.

I first heard Muse this year in some random youtube video. Don't remember what the video was but now I love Muse.

actually he's correct for techno
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belleville_Three#The_Belleville_Three

as for Kraftwerk they were more industrial than anything, Derick May, Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson were Kraftwerk fans when they made Detroit Techno

Turisas, Tyr, Andrew Bird, Nile, Wolfchant, and Gov't Mule. Fuckin' love them all. They all started as songs I snagged from a friend's Ipod then I downloaded all their songs. Love'em.

oh, I think i discovered Jay Reatard and Mark Sultan this year... both great musicians/bands. Anybody who likes Eddie Cochran, punk music or even the white stripes should give them a go...

Mute Math. Heard 'Break the Same' on some video a while back, eventually bought their album, and they're now my absolute favourite band. I must have listened to the album over 100 times, I just keep finding new things to hear. If you're reading this, get on YouTube and look for Typical, or another one of their songs. You won't regret it.
Club of the Sons (who are actually related to MuteMath in a distant kinda way) is also pretty awesome, even though they haven't released much yet.

I discovered the brilliance of Voltiare, its a one man band with lyrics that are horribly evil and dark but with a cheery upbeat tone which is brilliant
