For me I might have discovered em late 2007, but they're still on heavy rotation on my player...

Peeping Tom - If you ever liked Faith No More, Tomahawk, Fantomas, or Mr Bungle, its worth trying, its Mike Patton's new band, yes the voice of Portal's 'Anger Sphere'!
It's not metal tho, or even rock, as he put it, its how he'd like pop to sound if he didn't hate pop so much. It's part rock, part hip hop, part jazz, part electro, all epic.

Something about the second track reminds me why I love Mike Patton, sometimes hearing him you feel that reading the paper and finding out he has a dozen bodies in his garden wouldn't be a huge surprise...

Just off topic, but if you want to annoy any friends who are seriously into Rammstein, this video kills me every time!

I don't know a lot about Rammstein, but to me I don't think they're taking themselves too seriously, why do I find the fans are mental?

BTW, I'm all for pop if its fun and original, I'll give the ting tings a go, haven't heard any yet!

I just mainly can't stand the britney/justin timberlake clones that make up seemingly 90%, along with the soul/R&B clones.

Making your voice a bit wobbly doesn't make you a diva or 'emotionally deep' it just makes you sound like you're trying too hard and can't hold a note.

I'll be honest, Dream Evil. Never heard of them until some one linked me to a music video for Book of Heavy Metal. Had to go and grab their CDs. I love a band that can bounce between serious songs and humor. Well, that and all the good metal music.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-pN8qAiZhQ The vidja that got me to enjoy them. Though I'm probably just slow and they're probably not obscure, what the hell.

I started seriously listening to Black Sabbath, Gogol Bordello, Radiohead and The Black Mages this year. It's been a good year.

Ayreon, don't know if any of you guys know it but, I think it is great. It is like a prog metal-ish rock-opera, and every album features at least one of my favorite singers. Seeing as there are a lot of Opeth fans here M. Akerfeld also sings on one of their albums.

Weezer and Dream Theater. I also got into Metallica properly this year, although I knew about them, of course.

Although I knew about them, I only really got into Rammstein this year (this month, to be exact). Now I think they're great.
Also, Beneath The Massacre, Prototype, MSC, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins and Pendulum to name a few.

Hmm I'd say despite the fact he (okay not a band but a musical artist) is nothing like what I usually listen to Mike Doughty. I heard I Hear The Bells and loved it. Also Story Of The Year...my friend introduced me to them over summer and I got addicted to the song Anthem Of Our Dying Day.
Story of the Year is really cool. From my neck of the woods. Not very often that I get to say that about famous people/bands

I've loved Avenged Sevenfold for a few years, but I only just started to listen to Disturbed a few months ago, and haven't stopped. They're my favourite band :)

In 2008, I discovered

William Elliott Whitmore (think old-time, with banjo, but better than it sounds. If you hate that music, I guarantee you'll like this guy.) The video is just a clip of a song, but listen to everything he's done. Please. You'll thank me.

Rodrigo y Gabriela (super fast, super crazy classical guitar. That's it. That's all they do. And it's amazing.)

Diana Krall (smokey-sounding jazz)

Nick Drake (waay old acoustic guitar. Think... predecesor to Damien Rice.)

It makes me really happy to see more people discovering the awesome that is Muse...
