The Kinks. Fuck The Beatles. The Beatles are nothing. The Kinks should have been fucking massive. Instead they had a few top ten singles and faded into obscurity, becoming a cult band.

hell yes dude. as a kid, one of the reasons i landed in anti-establishment (without sounding like a tool...), anti-capitalism, anti-consumerism, pretty much anti-everything america has turned into, was because i LOVED the song Ape Man by the Kinks, i listened to that CD all the time. in my teens, i tried opening some of my fellow punk-rockers up to the song, but unfortunately, the message never sunk in. But the message, pure punk rock, though the music is clearly not.

'Dedicated Follower Of Fashion' is my fav song of theirs. It's so acidic without coming across as hostile or with an undercurrent of jealousy. I really wonder if the Carnaby St, self-absorbed, twats actually twigged at the fun being poked at them through that song.

The Dear Hunter
I wasn't that big of a fan the first time I heard them, but they really grew on me. Their project "The Color Spectrum" is really cool too.

Surprised a band like Renaissance fly's so low under the radar, they had the big epic songs and little pop songs as well.

VDGG seems criminally under-appreciated. Whereas Yes, King Crimson, and Genesis are all household names, VDGG, despite being a peer to these bands, seems not to be as widely known. VDGG were had beautiful, lush harmonies, remarkable organ work, groovy jazz-influenced drumming, and excellent compositions. The vocals are excellent. Singer Peter Hammil's voice is highly dynamic, with an excellent range, pitch-perfect intonation, and a large helping of emotion. His singing has been likened to Hendrix's guitar playing. The lyrics almost always are thoughtful and intelligent, the music is highly musical, and the live shows could get quite heavy.

VDGG were darker than many of their contemporaries, a stark contrast the the often flowery nature of Yes and Genesis. Guitars, although certainly present (often played by Robert Fripp), didn't feature too prevalently in their studio work, although singer Peter Hammill is a highly capable guitarist. Being somewhat atypical may explain why VDGG aren't as well known as their contemporaries. That, and the music being somewhat difficult for some to access, requiring a high degree of patience. VDGG are still around today, having released an album last year. I've not listened to it, but the tacks seem a bit short. None of them are even over seven minutes! Strange.

Susumu Fucking Hirasawa- The man doesn't so much compose music as he does craft absolute perfection and he's practically unheard of in most of the circles that I'm in. Granted, he's a Japanese composer but that's no excuse!

I mean honestly, how can a man who composed something as beautiful as this NOT be a well known name outside of a few select circles?

Feeder
They had some success in 90s and 00s but that's about it. It's a shame they aren't that more popular because a lot of people will miss out on their newest album and it's one of their best albums.

Stuff from their new album

Classics
I want to love feeder again. They keep saying things like we're getting back to our roots, but instead of releasing metal/grunge like their first album, they release shitty indie pop albums(although I havn't heard much of the new album), except for Renegades, that was a great album.
Although that said, some of their "shitty indie pop" as I called it is very fucking good.
But the one thing that annoys me the most is the fact that they only release their best style songs as b-sides. Like this one:

I personally think too few people have heard of Clutch. I wonder if they try to deliberately avoid mainstream success, cause they seem to be more of a club band than a stadium one. I recommend them to any fan of blues or classic rock. Here are four songs from four different albums of theirs- what I really like is that they're always changing their sound. Also, THOSE BEARDS!

Two words my friend, FUCK YES! Basically the band I would have put here myself. Not my favourite band in the stoner rock genre but definelty the one most people would like.

The Hold Steady.

Yeah, they're not the most marketable guys. But boy, they are awesome...
Separation Sunday and Boys and Girls in America are 2 of the finest hard rock albums of the 00s.

Yeah man, great band. Personally I'd count them more as blues rock, although they have changed their sound quite a bit over the years. Stoner rock for me is stuff like Kyuss and Sleep.

Every single 90's British Shoegazing band ever....Seriously.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shoegazing

It pains me everyday that no one knows about these bands, even in the genre's home country.

My Bloody Valentine, Chapterhouse, Ride, Catherine Wheel, Pale Saints, Adorable, The Boo Radleys, Slowdive, Blind Mr Jones, Sun Dial, Swervedriver, Lush, Curve, Kitchens of Distinction...all Great stuff!
Ahh, I listened to Loveless the other day but the only track that really stands out at the moment is Only Shallow (such a good song though; Nadja's cover is really good too). Maybe I should give it time? (Also aren't MBV Irish?)

OT:
This band are gods, and no one I ever meet seems to have heard of them. Only ever met one person in the flesh who liked them :(
I can just put that album on whilst in bed and fall into it. It's so immersive and beautiful and perfect.
Doesn't really have the same effect during the day...

This guy's incredible too. Again, no-one seems to have heard of him.
Hard to pick a single song to represent him.

And these two made a pretty stunning collaboration. Never met anyone who knew who they were and even on the internet they seem pretty obscure, but they're big in the genre.
Absolutely haunting music. Just creeps you out as who hear distant noises and immense atmosphere which completely envelopes you.

And of course, this. This was used during the credits of Mass Effect 1, and has since become my favourite song of all time, but the band seems to have remained pretty obscure even though they had another song used during the end of Mass Effect 3 as well.
The guitar, the melody and those lyrics get me every time. Every component just fits together so well as they build up that urgent vibe before slowing into that gorgeous chorus.

Yeah, they'd be on the edge of the genre so to speak, more blues than stoner to be sure. but I'd still group them in with bands like Corrosion of Conformity and Down in my playlists.

Speaking of Sleep, apparently they are playing in Dublin (only half hour away from me) tomorrow. I wish I had the money to go.

Apart from the aforementioned Kyuss, which was (at least I think) reasonably popular at one time, and Sleep, why not Fu Manchu? Their tracks are a bit samey, but sound awesome anyway:
