Anyone remember the band "Sponge"?
Yes, I do, unfortunately.

A band I liked that no one I knew had heard of was 'Sky Eats Airplane'. Shame, I thought they were pretty good...

maximum the hormone is one of my fav bands... but it japaness so no one knows them
Pretty much anyone who has seen Death Note will have heard of them.
Buiiki Kaesu is my favourite album, it jumps between pretty much any sounds possible for effect. The way 'What's Up People' goes into 'Chu Chu Lovely Muni Muni Mura Mura Purin Purin Boron Nururu Rero Rero' is pure genius.

Powerglove. They need to be a lot more famous than they are.
That being said, I know loads of people who have heard of them. In addition, just ask a person to name a few games that they like and one of the songs they've done is bound to come up. Play that song to them and they'll be hooked. That happened to my housemate, he said F-Zero so I put on Mute City. I knew he liked Final Fantasy too so played a load of those songs too. He borrowed the cds off of me quite hastily. (Yes I have actually bought the cds!).

People in Planes. I haven't met a single other person who knows them. It makes me sad.

I discovered Clutch on Viva la Bam and downloaded a bunch of their stuff, they are pretty good. I also listen to Justice and Thousand Foot Krutch, but I don't know how many people know of them.
Big time Clutch fan, reporting in.

Also really enjoy their offshoots, The Bakerton Group and The Company Band (featuring Jess Margera on bass, in case you care), and I'm guessing you would too. :)

One pretty obscure band I found completely coincidentally about 8 years back is Less [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Less_(band)], some really gloomy music but definitely worth a listen. Their music is available for download for free, strangely enough. :D

Also: who remembers The Cartoons?!

EDIT:
OH SNAP I ALMOST FORGOT: 2 Unlimited [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzyFmilkd80] are getting BACK TOGETHER. Good times are a-comin'... As a Dutch person, I'd like to be the first to say: You're welcome, foreigners.

Scott Edgar and the Universe.

Australian folk band who, so far, have only released their album in Australia and on iTunes. And it's one of my favourite albums ever.

Pretty sure they are just older and thats why they are not talked about. Honestly thats good classic music that, in my highschool, the black kids still appreciate and enjoy.
Well thats just it, still some of the greatest bands in the world and yet no one in my school knows of there existence. I bet a crappy cover will be made eventually and then it will popular again!

I listen to mostly obscure bands. I really like finding a new band that really rocks. Obscure bands tend to go new and interesting ways with their music. I get bored easily with pop music.

Exactly lets face it, its only a matter of time before an R&B singer or someone like Kanye West samples it.

I know all of the ones you mentioned.

I like Project Jenny/ Project Jan. They were in Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist for like three seconds (they were the band that when everyone left the concert, that one guy ripped off his shirt and started dancing)

Also this band called E-Friends. They're really really good but not many people have heard about them. http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=620669629#/pages/E-FRIENDS/45978393819?ref=mf is their facebook page and you should really check them out.
