Wormhole Effect was a goup out of San Diego. They mostly did percussion-heavy instrumentals, but had enough variety to keep them interesting.
You know, I've noticed a lot of bands come from here...any reason why? I actually see quite a few of 'em in the San Diego music scene.

Every Deathnote fan in the world knows who you are talking about. I'm one of them.
Yeah, they're pretty awesome.

I know this band, pretty obscure by any standard, they're an indie band that only released one album: Crotchduster. Great American band, if you check them out remember . . . satire is an art form.

Also the Fine Young Cannibals, Flyleaf (but I bet their known now because of Rockband), and Matisyahu is pretty good too.

EDIT

I almost forgot

Ostrich Death Dance, a new trance band out of Houston, Texas, USA. Listen to their songs GGG, Gliese 581 d, or The Cancer Dance.

Has anybody else ever seen that episode of that show Tiny Toons (little kid versions of all the Looney Tunes characters) where they had a bunch of songs by They Might Be Giants?

o_O I'm not crazy, I swear...
You're not crazy. I loved that episode. They did Particle Man [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGeDD_tyZzM] & Istanbul (Not Constantinople) [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbTE6qZnhPk&feature=related] that I can remember.

My favorite band that I never hear mentioned would have to be King Crimson. They've had a lot of different lineups, but the 90's one with Adrien Belew, Tony Levin, Robert Frip, Trey Gunn, Pat Mastelotto, & Bill Bruford did some truly amazing things.

hmm, I'm going with RUN D.M.C, because I fucking hate 'gangsta rap' and seem to be the only one in my circle of (elitist metal head) friends who remembers the awsome that was RUN D.M.C.

Sure I could've said testament or something, but thats for more of a niche audience and people who knew them don't really forget them, groups like RUN D.M.C tend to get forgotten as their genre becomes trash.

Oh also Cold Chisel and Killing Heidi because I'm going through the whole 'Ausse rock' thing again (it is sooooo awsome).

People in Planes. I haven't met a single other person who knows them. It makes me sad.
I've just checked these guys out, simple curiosity.
All i can say is thank you.
You're welcome. And a fact that won't surprise anyone: I discovered People in Planes because a snippet of one of their songs, "Light for the Deadvine", was in an episode of House.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that no one here knows Light This City. Awesome Melodic Thrash Metal (I didn't even know that was a possible combination) from San Francisco Bay area. They were starting to explode and then recently split up to pursue educations while they're still under 26.

Others..... Testament, Ensiferum, God Forbid, Firewind, Sonic Syndicate, Symphony X, Norther, Emigrate (Rammstein's guitarist started them).

To anyone who said, I know Turisas. Russia's greatest love machine!

I listen to a ton of non-mainstream electronica, mostly indie stuff, so nobody really knows who I am talking about when I talk music, 99% of ever.

A band called "Mordred". They were thrash/metal/funk fusion that were highly influential and predated stuff like 311 and Rage Against The Machine. They are believed to be the first band to put a turntable into a metal song, but no one seems to remember them except for fans like me. They were my absolute favorite band in high school.

MINIMUM WAAAAAAAAAAAAAGE! YA!
They Might Be Giants are my favorite not-as-popular-as-they-should-be band.
I only know of them because my mom really liked the song called "Little birdhouse in your soul"

For some reason, here in England, not many people have heard of Breaking Benjamin, which saddens me :(

It's the awesome downtown area. You've got all kinds of live music. I'm now out in some midwestern city, and all we have out here as far as live music is 80's cover bands. It could be because the only place you can find live music out here is in bars, and drunk midwesterners just love their hair bands. Anyway, the point was with the cool music forums you have in SD, you've got a good place for small bands to become known.
