http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20100509/lf_nm_life/us_obama_education I admit that they can be a serious distraction, but the part about games putting "new pressures on our democracy" sounds kind of far-fetched. what do you guys think?

Politicians are out of touch by their very nature. Especially when you haven't been a memeber of the normal human race long enough to get to the white house.

Kill him, put his head on a stick as a warning to all other politicians, its the only way for them to understand that gaming doesn't make us violent.

I don't really see how he's wrong.. sure, it's unflattering, but that doesn't mean it's wrong..

It's unflattering to say that america has an obesity epidemic, but it doesn't mean that americans aren't getting fatter every year.

Kids should be playing outside as much as possible.. This is the first generation that the parents will be, on the whole, sedentary louts doing as little as possible (and achieving doing very little indeed)... passing that onto our children is not a good thing.

So basically 'Americans who play video games or listen to music on a modern player should not use it for entertainment, but to extract information and become so intelligent that America can take over the world'
...gosh power makes people into nutballs

The fact that he said he doesn't know how to use them already shows he doesn't know what he's on about.

I voted for him as lesser of two evils (contrast Sarah Palin being a heartbeat away from the Presidency).

Not gonna make that mistake again. I'll either vote Republican or stay home in 2012.

Yeah, you get such hard decisions over there. We get to vote, but we don't have to think because it doesn't matter- GLORIOUS LEADER GORDON BROWN is still in number 10.

Not that I give a shit about London. It's down south and is thus not important.

I basically agree with you, but Mr.Obama owns a Nintendo Wii which he has admitted to playing and enjoying, so he is being a little hypocritical.

Speaking of remoteness from one's capital city, I'm 2,274 miles (~3660km) from Washington DC. That's approximately the same distance as between Lisbon, Portugal and Smolensk, Russia (or, if you want it in UK terms, between London and Damascus). A lot of people out here have a chip on their shoulder about the federal government.

Well, he has a lot of time on his hands, he is bound to say some dumb shit.

He has a hung Senate, that can't possibly be fixed till November with the next senatorial elections, so till then you can guarantee pretty much no new laws of any particular interest. He's not going to agree to anything if he doesn't think it will get ratified soon, he is also paralysed over Britain's election fiasco so no big decisions in Iraq/Afghanistan without them on board.

Not surprising in his self admitting "I have no idea how they work" though it is refreshing that old Black Presidents are just as out of touch as old White Presidents.

But there is no way you can't be condescending telling people that "yeah it's great having the freedoms and opportunities of internet and technology, but you should want to educate yourselves, not have fun".

Tell you what Obama, you give clear path to your citizens on how:
(1) a lot of people from a LARGE variety of background
(2) can take a course of education
(3) that leads to a secure, well paying and economy boosting job.

Simply saying "get educated" is pointless if 80% go to Higher Education, get worthless art or humanities degrees then have to start looking for a job with massive debt hanging over them. People who want to learn WILL LEARN, but people looking for a well paying and secure job, where are the vocational degrees?

Don't end up like the UK where you have University graduates flipping burgers or on the dole.

How is he being hypocritical? He's pointing out that games can be a distraction. Which is true.
Just because its critical doesn't mean he's wrong. Are gamers so precious that anything even middy concerning about gaming habits is immediately dismissed regardless of its validity?

Amen, man. My Core Humanities professor said to me, "why aren't you majoring in English or the humanities? You've got so much creativity" to which I replied "because student loans don't pay themselves off, so I'm going for accounting and finance. Auditors with professional degrees make six figures."

Please don't :( Just look at the way Republicans are voting on financial reform. They have sold out to the lobbyists 100%. Look at how they voted on the "anti-rape" bill. Look at how they lie about financial reform being another bailout bill for the banks (in fact the banks would pay into a fund to bail themselves out). Look at how they lied that the public option would have increased debt instead of reducing it.

Really you have no one good to vote for, but unfortunately Obama/Democrats are still the lesser of 2 evils.

You should see how shit for choice we are in Australia. I can choose between a 50% rightwing position or a 45% rightwing position.

YAY FOR DEMOCRACY!

I warned yall about Obama, now he is trying to take away entertainment.
Instead of tossing one of the two aside (education and entertainment), find time in your life for both.

I said it before and Ill say it again
Obama is a jackass!
