Having never played a Bioware game before then, back in 2005 I saw Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic for $10

Decided to pick it up and for the 1st half hour (on the space ship at the start) I thought it was pretty lame combat-wise. Next thing I know 8 hours had passed, I was still on Taris and had to force myself to put the game down! Now it is my #3 fave game of all time (behind the N64 Zeldas).

That is my story of when and how I became a Bioware fan.

2005: Morrowind with the Tribunal and Bloodmoon expansions in a $10 Red Stripe deal.

Brought it home and installed it and fell in love immediately. Sure, the combat dice rolls are horrendous, but maxing out Athletics and Acrobatics made travelling Vvardenfell so much more fun. The setting was awesome, surreal and just a pleasure to play. The Telvani towers, the city inside the body of a giant crab, the haunting moans of the silt striders. That terrifying moment when you hear the cry of a Cliff Racer and just want to murder your family because they are such a pain in the arse. The Morag Tong, oh how I loved finally joining. That first encounter with the Dark Brotherhood and being totally taken by surprise by one when waking up.
...
Ahem
...
Yeah. "Bargain of a Lifetime" I would say.

Yes we will. It'll be a while and there will be expand-alones for Rebirth that fix a lot of the major gameplay issues that I've seen people bitching about and patches to squash the bugs. Every X game I've seen released so far has been a completely buggy mess on day one and then improved on over time. You should see what the 1.0 version of X3 is like, it's a total mess and practically unplayable without several patches the most important of which makes it so joysticks actually work.

.Hack//Infection

bought it on a whim coz the cover looked cool. then it took me a year to track down the other 3 (i had no internet at the time).
Isn't that the .Hack that has the nickname: .Hack//Incest ?
No, you're thinking of the terrible anime that took place after the original games. Wikipedia says its name is .hack//Legend of the Twilight Bracelet.

Anyway

I picked up the first Atelier Iris game for about $12 out of Game Crazy's(back when it was still very much a thing) cheap used game bin. I got really into the game and have been buying Gust's alchemy games ever since. Though I'm a few games behind right now, but that's cause I've been out of the country for nearly a year now.

I picked up Batman, Arkham Asylum on steam a long time after release when it was on sale. I always thought video game tie in to other franchises were pretty bad, and Batman seemed like the kind of title that would get a below average game. What I got was the most surprising turn of events I've experienced in a long time. The combat was great and fluid, the stealth was great (maybe not in a "real" sence, but they took gameplay first and it worked out). The gadgets were awesome, the riddler trophies were fun to find (not like the other two, were they felt like they were there just be there). This game got me so entrenched in batman lore I'm probably sold on every Arkham game forever, even though the charm and small scale is lost in the new ones. Had one dissapointing boss (killer croc) but everything else was a joy.

Another game that I got on a steam sale for cheap way after the game was made was Dark Souls. I'd heard of demon souls before and knew it was a hard game, I thought from what I'd heard it was like a super hard Devil May Cry game, but eventually I heard that the lore in Dark Souls was cool so I bought in sale. Dark Souls was the most astonishing game I've ever played, it blew me out of the water with its slow and methodical gameplay, the atmosphere, and the absolute freedom the game actually gave a player. It was basically one of the games I'd thought in my head (gameplay wise) and to see it come to life before me with an environment and multiplayer specifically built to just reinforce their core message was brilliant. I remember the first time I found a shortcut I just loved it. Superb level design, enemy design, just very well designed all around, the PC port was bad at first but I never experienced it and in stereoscopic 3D it's one of the best looking games I've ever played. Just like with Arkham games I think Dark Souls 2 lost a lot of what made Dark Souls amazing instead of just really good. I'm tempted to buy a PS3 just to play Demon Souls now.

Another Dawn of War person here, though in my case it was a collection of the original and all 3 expansions.

If digital sales count, then I also picked up X3TC & AP for about £5 when they were on sale. Best £5 I've spent in a long time

I don't know, the previous games may have had bugs, but they didn't have problems stemming from the core gameplay mechanics. It would take a drastic over hall for Rebirth to actually pull itself out of the gutter. Sure it wouldn't take too much to make it playable, but it sure would to make it fun.

I'll nominate FTL: Faster Than Light. Bought it cheap in a Steam sale, finally got around to playing it months later, and I think it's worth $15, rather than the $10 it's selling for. Oh, and this is despite every run to date being a failure.

Tenchu Z for the 360. When the Blockbuster Video store in my area was finally closing down, they had a big liquidation sale to get rid of everything, and prices just kept dropping further and further on all videos and games. I went there on the day before it was to be shut down and found the bargain bin. Everything in it was marked for $10. I dug around and found Tenchu Z with a big "80% OFF!" sticker. Now I had played a couple of the Tenchu games in the past and always found them to be a bit of ninja-based fun. And for $2, why the hell not? So I picked it up and I'll be damned if I didn't fully enjoy it. My only complaint about the game is that, despite there being 50 levels, there's only about 5 or 6 actual stages, just with different guard formations over and over again. Still, I sure as hell got my $2 worth and more. Every now and then I'll still bust it out to play a couple levels and get my ninja-sneak on. =3

If they keep doing what they've been doing lately they'll release an upgraded version with added features and improvements like they did with Terran Conflict which they used to streamline the interface from X3 a bit and add a bunch of new features and ships and stations and stuff.

That all sounds nice, but no external view and no changing ships is a bit of a deal breaker for me. Maybe in another year when it goes on sale for 75% off or more and with a general price reduction, but until then I'll go back to Reunion, Terran Conflict and Prelude.

Way of the Samurai for PS2. I found it by chance for sale at my local video rental store(they were getting rid of it to make room on the shelf for newer games). It looked interesting, so I picked it up for $10. Been a follower of the series ever since.

GI Joe for the NES, I thought it should be fun because I liked GI Joe back in the day but I was expecting the usual crappy TV Show Game. I was very wrong. It had a lot of characters that played very differently.

Also, Ribbit King: an incredibly trippy version of minigolf where you knock a frog across the green with a mallet. In hindsight it may not have been a very good game if you're not baked out of your skull.

Damn I haven't had a good bargain bin purchase since the 3D craze started around 5th gen and I bought like 10 SNES cartridges dirt cheap right out of the pile.
Now, those were proper bargain bin days. Gamestop gouged used games to the point where they're the price of a new copy. I remember getting nes carts for pennies.

That was amazing. I spent my entire childhood renting the same games over and over and ended up buying them all in a single evening. I felt like Scrooge McDuck that day.

A few years ago (back in the days of Windows XP) Me and my brother decided that we would each buy a game on a 2-for-1 deal down at our local game store. My brother got some sports game I can't remember the name of (not even an EA sports game, some Swedish knock-off stuff) and I? I didn't have anything in mind, so I picked up a small RTS game called Paraworld, because it had dinosaurs on the box!

To this day, I still think that game is my favorite RTS, not even Dawn of War, not even Starcraft II, has been this fun. And the Soundtrack still stands as the best I've ever heard.

Now if only I could beat that god-damn ninja-pirate hostage rescue mission...

Civilization II for the PC, I remember getting my dad to buy it for me from PC world one time, I was probably 8 or 9 and was given a spare windows 95 laptop to play it on from his work. To this day it is still my favourite Civ game, I go back to it now and again and still have just as much fun as the first day I played it.

Folklore for the PS3. My mum got it for me from her boss for next to nothing because his son didn't like it. I was skeptical at first but found the game completely amazing, it's not exactly a triple A game but it was still definitely worth a playthrough on both characters.

I got Bayonetta at 12 piddley puns. Twelve.

One of the better DMC style games out there.
