Both, I suppose. But depends on what you're after:
- Hotline: Miami is fast paced and brutal - you go in, murderize people and get points - the more violent the better. The story (if you're into that) is...will make your head spin a bit as it's...well, schizophrenic seems a really good descriptor there. Also, the soundtrack is nice. And I'll leave it at that.
- Bastion is more of an ARPG with less the complexity, really, but a lot of polish. Or perhaps it's an action game with RPG elements - who can tell the difference, I say. At any rate - you play and you have stats and stuff. It's good, the soundtrack is awesome, the story is all right. It is more about the story than Hotline is. And, I must say, the difficulty in Bastion is probably one of the best ways to tackle it from games I've played - you can "pray" to different gods - they will give you a penalty (say, enemies do more damage or die harder) but also a boon (XP and resource bonus), so you can make it as hard as you wish.

If you have to choose only one, then ask yourself this - would you want a game where you can go in guns blazing, swinging bats, knives and whatever else comes at hand to spill a lot of blood and cause lots of pains or would you rather swing a single weapon most of the time and upgrade it and stuff. If the former, then it's Hotline, if the latter - Bastion.

I personally preferred Hotline Miami. I loved the awesome sense of gamefeel the music, gameplay, and aesthetics gave me. I also thought its approach to story (or rather anti-story) was wholly unique.

I thought Bastion was 'ok'. It was pretty, but the narrator got on my nerves pretty quick. IMO it was an overrated game.

They probably have two of the best soundtracks of modern gaming, but Bastion's is better. Play that.

Short answer: yes

Long answer: Both are really good in their own way and I highly recommend either. Bastion's soundtrack is AMAZING. Seriously, my favorite video game soundtrack since Chrono Trigger. Its gameplay, atmosphere, and story are all great as well. Hotline Miami is weird, brutal, and fun as long as that's what you're into. If a top-down view murderfest with a drugged-up 80's theme isn't your thing it may not be for you, but buy it anyway.

Why can't you get both?

Seriously both games are amazing, each in their own way. Both have soundtracks I still listen to and have very good gameplay.

Hotline Miami can be be described as psychedelic, where you play a guy who wears animal mask to murder murder his fellow man in 1980's Miami and whose mental state isn't exactly what you'll call stable. Expect to die multiple times each level until you get it right.

Bastion is a different kettle of fish, an action game with RPG elements. Gameplay is narrated throughout the entire game and tells the story as you slowly learn about the world and the Calamity that destroyed it.

Get both. They are two different styles of game so a comparison is out of the question. What's also out of the question is any excuse not to buy both. It's the Steam Holiday Sale. It's $10 for both. Grab them.

The only thing I liked about Bastion was the narrator, I didn't even get all the way through the game. Hotline Miami on the other hand I thought was just about perfect, I loved the fast paced, visceral combat and was enthralled by the enigmatic story.

Get both, they're both fucking amazing.

If I had to pick, I'd prefer Hotline Miami slightly more. But that's mostly because I prefer faster-paced games, Bastions great if you want the gameplay to be a bit slower.

It really depends on the type of game you want, they are very different games, if you're after story, go for Bastion. However if you need a little dose of cathartic top down violence, Hotline Miami is for you. I have both and like both.

If you can only get one I guess I would go with Bastion, but I wasn't impressed with either of them. I never finished Hotline Miami because I got bored. Bastion has fun enough gameplay (though it doesn't take long for you to become really over powered) and the story is interesting enough to keep you going but I didn't really find it to be anything too special

Basically this. Bastion got really samey and repetitive all the way through, and after awhile even the weapons being added were boring. The narrator and music are okay, the gameplay is... competent, I guess. But it will wear on you. I had to put it down for a few months before coming back to beat it.

Hotline Miami, on the other hand, I've played through about 4 times already. It's shorter, but the gameplay is way more addictive and doesn't do anything that would outright turn you off. The fast pace of combat and restarting keeps you focused and the game intense, and the 20-odd masks all offering different perks adds some incentive to unlock them and try them out. Some are shit, but some are great, and you'll get a fair amount of replay value out of tackling the same levels over again with a different approach based on your mask's perks.

Both are good, and both are often on steam sales, but of the two I'd recommend Hotline Miami first, and get Bastion later.

I was on steam and had a few pound so I was wondering which one of these games you recommend?
I haven't played Hotline: Miami, but I received Bastion a couple of years ago as a gift.

I was pleasantly surprised as I hadn't really heard about it and I didn't know what kind of game it was at all.

I thought the narration was an innovative feature as it's more of a real-time narration, rather than being a disconnected voice-over distracting you from play. It's intermittent during gameplay, so it didn't get on my nerves at all compared to NihilSinLulz. The 'cinematics' are relatively quick and provide some back-story and some exposition.

The plot flows very smoothly and it's a pretty engaging way to tell the story.

The gameplay is fun and the variety of weapons & capabilities are satisfying. The challenges are nicely difficult and varied: from enemy buffs/self nerfs to the individual weapon challenges rewarding you with unlocks and dosh depending on tier completion (1st, 2nd, 3rd place).

The story's fairly unique and interesting to me. It kept me playing and interested to discover the resolution.

I really like the music. When I then found out how it was produced/recorded, I couldn't help but respect it even more. There are some tracks that were less memorable than others, but overall I found that it oddly fit the game and its setting. This sort of weird steampunk/greenpunk/fantasy environment, which I also found interesting and appealing.

I played the game with an Xbox 360 controller and found the controls simple & intuitive.

Good luck on your purchase.

I beat Hotline Miami in a week and a half, and by 'beat', I mean I unlocked a platinum trophy on it. I liked what I played, as it made me feel like a strategist to some extent, but with a more real-time component to it. That being said, it's hardly a strategy game. The game is incredibly difficult to beat, however, and there is very little to it aside from a plot you can summarize in probably less than five sentences. That being said, Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number is definitely something I want to pick up soon.

As for Bastion, from what I played of the demo, yes, my computer chugged a bit (low RAM), but from what I played, It felt so different and wonderful and mysterious. I have the full game, I should play it here soon.
