I used mainly the Machete and the Duelers pistol. Once I got the Brushers Pike I changed the pistols to several different things including the Carbine and Calamity Launcher but never used the one where it was essentially a mortor, how the hell is that useful?

I enjoyed it but it was sorta repetitive near the end and there were no real side missions, only side objectives.

What was you weapon load out. I also love how the narrator comments on you load out.
I used the pistols and the flame bellow. I nicknamed one of the flame bellows special skills, "the flaming pinwheel of death". It could actually lag the framerate since it spit out so much fire.

What you're probably pleasantly find is that it's not just the load outs, nearly every action can potentially and dynamically trigger the narrator.
Also this. I still can't fucking believe the first time you get a core and your running and the narrator comments on if your just running for life or if you stop and fight. Good god I love this games narrator. Just his voice is grand AND he has the potential to make a comment on anything from the combination of idols to loadout to drinks along with just random things you do in levels.

It's one of my favorite recent games too. And one that I've actually finished. After that, I immediately began playing it again with Game+.

The narrator was great. The art style was enjoyable, especially how the levels built up as you trod onwards. Gameplay was excellent and the difficulty was spot on (especially as you could choose the icons to make the challenge more interesting). The soundtrack is one of the best. It's the only soundtrack I have properly listened to, in addition to that of Civilization V (and Rise of Nations to an extent).

And after getting my hands on Diablo III, it reminded me of Bastion on so many ways. Changing the 'runes' for weapons/skills to change how they act. Collecting shards throughout the game in Bastion, and collecting the sword shards of Tyrael in D3. The Stranger, and so on.

Breaker's Bow was my absolute favorite. Had that most of the game. Went for the powerful, rather than the quick path on runes. I changed the other one more frequently, but the Spear (Brusher's Pike) comes to mind as one of the most trusted of 'em. Dual Pistols too.

I used the bow and War Machete.

Anyway, that was one of my favourite games of the year. The narration was amazing, the level design was wonderful and the weapons were simple to use.
It did have its downsides, but still...

i own four copies of it in one form or another, so yeah i like it.
sound track is amassing, build the wall and slinger song being my favourite
musket and brushers pike was probably my favourite combo, then then i started using the carbine and musket for the super challenges, didnt like the machete which annoyed me, also the machete proving ground bloody infuriated me, also the breaker bow is pretty much useless in this game, but still fun

but yeah bought this game the first time it came to xbox, hadnt heard any of the hype just wanted a colourful adventure game, but yeah one of my top 5 games ha

Just out of curiousity are you using a gamepad? I got it as a gift/prize at the end of last year and I find it (and some other games, like Super Meat Boy) too hard to play with a keyboard and mouse. I'm really tempted to get a 360 controller for my PC.[/quo

No, no gamepad but I wish i was i hate having to navigate difficult terrain because with wasd it feels like trial and error. I need to get something to hook up my 360 controller.
The best investment I made when I started PC gaming last year was the wired 360 controller. Many games such as this just work a lot better with a controller. They're hard to find but worth every penny (especially since they are cheaper than the wireless ones)

I disliked it on the PC. can't speak for it on the xbox, but it certainly felt like it needed a controller, which I don't have for the PC (I have a logitech gamepad, but it's horrible, and doesn't work for anything)

I played this during Summer of Arcade. It's an amazing game and such a gripping narrative.

Also, I don't know if people realize this but I seriously think it's one of the best OST's I've heard in a long, long time. Especially Zia's song and Mother I'm Home. Wow.

Also also, I generally used the Brusher's Pike (That stunned people and had other upgrades and stuff) and whatever the mortar weapon was called? Hmm, it's been a while.

One of my all time favourite games though, definitely.

(And a fantastic ending! IMHO, you have to play the game twice to get the real ending)

As with most people, I found it a freaking awesome game. Well, the game play was okay, but it had a nice flow of dodge, reflect, swipe, special, roll, shoot, in any variation that didn't allow stagnant walking (Except with turrets). The weapons were a unique balance of medieval to mortar, and the system of allowing upgrade changes (no permanent harm for your lack of knowledge) is wonderful to suit any task.
The art style is unique and colorful, and the music suits the situation well--a western flow with techno and soft rock influences.
The style of narration as the plot itself is a unique tool, allowing only one familiar voice whilst you can recognize what's going on. It allows story and game play to flow without breaks, to continue the flow that the whole game goes with. That being said, Rucks' voice...eargasm...

For serious stuff? "Ever seen a kid with a musket and a fire bellows? Bit of a disturbin' sight."

For fooling around? "Now that's just plain overkill. I mean, come on..."

As for my general impression? Awesome game, it is. Paced well, difficulty as a game mechanic, fun to experiment with loadouts, anticipating what Rucks will say next; subtle changes in narration in New Game plus - that was a nice touch.

As for the dreams? Kid's is tough. Zia's is tragic. Zulf's is downright crushing. And Rucks'? It oozes somber dignity.

Your amazingly insightful post truly has shed a light on the quality of this game.

OT:War Machete + Carbine (not sure if that was the name of the single shot rifle?)
Yeah I really liked bastion, and didn't expect to like it as much as i did. For me the narration made it, that on top of a really great art style and pretty fluid gameplay that kept the story roiling just meant it was one of those single player games that i just had to finish right away. It's been a while since I played it and all this talk about it + getting the soundtrack with the humble bundle is making me want to revisit it.

Who needs to revise for exams anyway?

Solid combat. Interesting story up to the last fourth or so. Could have been vastly improved with more modes, more free access to content (i.e. playing levels again or something), and by turning the narration from a series of scripted events into a dynamic system (even a simple one), that examined recent game-play to make commentary.

Bastion has one of the best diverse armory i've seen in a long time.
+ that voice actor whom i could listen to for hours.

To answer your question, i often took the Hammer + [Random], just because the charge-attack of the hammer while you're blockin usually instakilled everything it touched.

But i also tried fancy stuff like Pistols + Shotgun or Spear + Fireburnythingy.

PS:
Also Bastion has one of the better endings out there :)

Yeah it's a fantastic game, with a really great sense of aesthetics. The graphics are great, the storyline is bloody brilliant, the soundtrack blows you away, and the gameplay is pretty damn great too.

I always stuck with the good old Cael Hammer and switched between the Dueling Pistols and the Army Carbine. Sure love those pistols though.

*goes to replay it*

Scrap musket + Carbine

Musket upgraded with knockback and double shot.
Carbine upgraded with damage and aim speed.

I'm sniping everything before it reaches me, swarms are held back with the musket and the occasional baddie that gets close gets blasted to carbine range when I unleash the doubleshot blunderbuss! Weird setup but it's great.

I normally hate using maces and hammers in game and switch instantly to a sword or spear. This game kept me using a hammer, it felt like an old friend. That's saying something.
