Ah, I see - positive reviews are clearly only paid and untrustworthy if they're for a mainstream game like Call of Duty.

Hypocrisy. Hypocrisy EVERYWHERE.
Since when is Arkham City not a mainstream game?

In the post-Dark Knight world, Batman is hardly an exclusively nerdy property.
Well, it's less mainstream than Call of Duty, at least. I couldn't think of another word for CoD - Blockbuster, maybe?

So our faith in Rocksteady has been rewarded is what you're saying?
Sometimes the truth isn't good enough, sometimes people deserve more. Sometimes people deserve to have their faith rewarded. Arkham City is the game Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now.

/sorry, that was a really lame joke.

OT: I've already preordered an am very excited for this one. Although my excitement is based SOLELY on the trailers and gameplay videos. I'm rather skeptical about anything a company paid to preview has to say about it.

Sure, it will probably be a great game, but I seriously don't bother reading reviews anymore. I've yet to see a gamespot review that gives a game lower than 6.

Edit: Just after this and saw reviews for Sonic:unleashed and Too Human, since these are the worst games I know of. The first got 3.5, the latter 5.5, I stand corrected.
Also see their review of Duke Nukem Forever... what was that, like 3.5? Lowest rating from any website, I think!

Just checked out the ratings of Arkham City on Metacritic. Average of 95, so far. But I just love how there's the one reviewer who has to say, "Wellll...it's not QUITE as good as the last game was."

So they got enough money to pay for reviews, let's hope they also spent some of that on game development :p
Why so cynical?
I read your post in Heath Ledger's voice. Please collect your internet cookie.

OT: This is my must-have, day-one purchase. I haven't bought a game on launch day since Portal 2/Mortal Kombat came out, so I'm looking forward to this.

I'll leave it to myself to determine if this is all hype, or if this game is the second coming of Christ. However, it seems to be leaning towards the latter.

Not surprised, Arkham Asylum was awesome so a successor with more to do and improved gameplay is bound to do good and I'm glad, not that I was skeptical. I already pre-purchased this from Best Buy so I am looking forward to kicking ass as Robin.

It would be a day-one purchase for me, but I won't actually have access to my PS3 until a week after release. Sad Jimmy is sad.

Four days to go. Absolutely cannot wait.
Seven for me :(
Silly (and non-comprehendable) regional release dates... Hell, even the Aussies get it before the UK.
Only if we're willing to pay $89. I'll be importing it from the UK... so I get the worst of both worlds: UK release date + shipping time.

A month to go 'til release. having played the demo and seen the trailers and gameplay videos (and LOVING Asylum) this is a must buy for me, but with so many neat games coming out next month the question is whether I get it now or later.

Somebody likes a game you don't! The publishers are OBVIOUSLY paying reviewers to give the game good reviews, nothing else explains it!

OT: Looks fantastic, gonna pre-order the Collectors Edition today.

Jim Sterling said that, actually...

He said that the 'open world' actually hurt the game because it was still a linear progression of events as far as the story goes. (There aren't like five separate crises that you can take care of in any order for instance)

If it's any consolation, I thought it was a great joke. Brought a smile to my face after a long day at work.

Not only have I preordered it, I paid off that preorder a couple weeks ago. Actually of my three preorders, I only owe about $25.

Why do people rely on the views of others so bloody much?.......
I don't think people are relying on reviews. Just kinda using them as a guide. Hoping it vindicates our feelings. I've seen bad reviews of games I loved. Unless a review outright slaughters the game, it won't prevent me from buying a game I wanted. And a great review won't make me buy a game I didn't care about. I can judge fairly well how good a game is in terms of gameplay from gameplay videos. I saw a video of Wet from an E3 and instantly lost what little interest I had in that game. I didn't need reviews to tell me it was bad.

I enjoyed Wet despite the terrible reviews :)
Thats why I avoid reviews totally now. Theres been a few games that were destroyed in the reviews that I went back to and played and found them to be brilliant
Well, I didn't read any of the Wet reviews. After seeing some gameplay videos, I decided I'd waste my money elsewhere. I only have so much spare money to throw away at vidja gaems after all.

It's cool you enjoyed it, though. We could probably have a whole thread about bad games we enjoyed. Pretty sure there have been. For example, I enjoyed Vanguard Bandits. Google that. Not a very good game and some fairly major plot-holes (especially if you play all three campaigns), but I enjoyed it.

Aren't those three sources infamously biased and, rumored to take bribes of some kind? Not that it matters as the people who know about Arkham City already know and already have known weather or not they're going to buy it at all. It won't take a review to keep them from buying and the number of people who are on the fence about this game are, I suppose, EXTREMELY small. I know I'm going to buy this game but when I do, I'll likely not be able to play as Catwoman...or Robin...or Nightwing.
