Thoughts?

More of a story trailer than anything else, which seems to be some kind of adaptation of A Long Halloween.

Hmmm, can't help but feel like I've seen all this before somehow. Weird.

It isn't much, but I like what I see. We honestly don't get enough of Bruce Wayne, nor have we seen the Dark Knight live up to his title as "The Worlds Greatest Detective". The crime scene investigations in Origins and Knight were nice and all, but far too linear. I hope Telltale gives us the opportunity to actually be a detective, instead of holding our hands the whole way through.

Also, I hope The Joker isn't in this game. He's stolen the show in all of the Arkham games so far. Batman has a rich and varied rogues gallery that needs some lovin'.

Looks terrible.
Even in my imagination of how a TTG makes Batman would look it didn't look that bad. Wow.

Looks absolutely utterly generic Batman and completely forgettable.
Also I dunno 'bout the rest of you, but when I play a Batman game I'm not sitting there thinking "Boy I wish I was Cel-Shaded Bruce Wayne at a fancy party playing point/click with trying to find shit to help the story progress."

Kinda' wanna punch shit and jump off buildings. And punch more shit.

It's TellTale...if you're hoping for something other than hand-holding you haven't been looking at their VN's.

I've never played a TellTale game before, so I'm not really sure what to expect. I could go watch something, any TellTale game, on YouTube to get an idea, but... Nah.

Basically think of a dialogue system that at most points is more limited than ME, with a handful of "choices" that only serve to progress the story in a slightly different way with the exact same outcome at the end and a couple of standard drama-lite heartstring attempts. Add in a bit of largely pointless QTE's to pad out the time and an episodic release schedule that is frustrating to play along with(to the point that it's honestly easier to just buy it in a bundle about a year after the first episode comes out in terms of keeping what's going on straight and the flow to not be stuck in the Panama Canal)

They're not bad, but they haven't aged well for the most part and don't really allow what would be required of an actual detective-spotlight Batman since everything relevant pops up without having to actually go looking for it and alot of the items you can only even try to use at certain points immediately after you get them if you pick anything up at all.

If you want a detective game, I'd recommend Contradiction. So long as you like cheesy over-acting,a batshit insane script, and a shoestring budget. Really engaging gameplay too despite most of the game being you pouring over a bunch of bullet points and running around something like a thousand square feet.

You know, for a moment, I was all in. And then it was the Harvey Dent story.

They could have done better. Like Hush. Or Penguin. Or they could have broken the mold and really gone in on a Bruce Wayne/Batman story, and had various villains that he had to deal with while also dealing with his own shit, not focusing on any of them long enough to pull the story away from Bat/Wayne. But they went with 'Baby's First Bat Story.'

Ehhhhhhhhhh.

I love me some Telltale, but... it's Batman. It's been done.

I realize that scavenging existing IP is Telltale's thing and they do it well, I mean they made Borderlands enjoyable for crying out loud! But this is the most tired, played out nerd IP in existence.

I'll probably pick it up when it's finished and on sale out of curiosity.

Looks awesome! Can't wait to watch a no-commentary lets play on youtube. Love telltale's writing, characters, and story but I hate "playing" their games.

I've seen the TFS crew play Contradiction. Since I watched the whole thing I feel obligated to buy the game the next chance I get. I've got Sherlock Holmes: Crime and Punishment to go back to if I ever feel the need to play a detective game, I guess, but such a game featuring Batman and his unique rogues gallery would be amazing.

I really like the idea of a more adventure game approach to Batman that highlights his detective work, both in and out of the cowl, considering we usually don't see as much of a focus on that as combat. (Com-Bat, amiright? Cause... you know... I'll show myself out.)

There's still every chance this'll end up being genuinely good, and I really do hope it is, but it all looks a bit Babies-First-Bat so far. I like that there seems to be a lot of Bruce Wayne just being Bruce Wayne, so that's something. But they missed the boat in not showing off any actual gameplay so we can't tell what if anything they're doing to explore the mechanics of The Bat that haven't been done before. Not to mention it seems to be yet another return to the well of The Long Halloween, and the style of the whole thing is just... there.

Honestly that's what really bothers me. Because after all the really fantastic explorations of all the various facets of Batman's style and atmosphere we've had in recent years, you've gotta bring a lot more to the table then this. Not noir enough to properly be Long Halloween or TAS, not agressively real-world enough to be the interesting little Elseworld that Nolan's films were, not the breath of fresh air that was Affleck having a Batsuit he could actually fight in, and not, well, everything that went into making Arkham possibly my favorite representation of the character.

It just looks really... there. Like it's the simplest, most basic possible iteration of Batman they could have gone with. Here's hoping they've got something much more inventive up their sleeve that they just aren't showing off yet for whatever reason. Although they probably really should be.
