ok so now that I've actually read the possible link in regards to what you were on about, why is this so disgusting to you?
Because its an indicator of the bloated budgets of the game industry. Even more money is being put into games which means even more copies need to sell for the game to be "successful" and with bigger and bigger budgets which this is clearly an indicator of its going to be harder and harder to meet those expectations.
An increase in model detail doesn't mean a proportional increase in budget cost, as others have already pointed out, the memory cost of the Batmobile is about the same percentage of the total memory as a similar primary asset in a 360 or PS3 game.
Jacking up the detail on a model is not exactly required to be that expensive or really expensive at all, it wasn't done on the previous generation due to memory restrictions. 160 MB model is really not that disgusting or out of bounds on these new consoles, it's developers taking advantage of the increase in power between generations. The memory usage of a model is not indicative of its cost or quality, if you're a shitty enough modeller you could make a model barely better than the previous generation and have it take up 160 MB of memory due to inefficiencies and poor optimization.
So yeah, this is probably going to be standard for the current generation going forward in games where the primary character models are playing large roles and thus need to be detailed. There are a lot of things to moan about with bloated triple AAA budgeting, this is likely not one of them though.
