So, today, i got the opportunity to play the Battlefield 3 Beta on the PC (Yes, i did pre-order via Origin). Asside from the tremendous lag (thanks to my crappy internet connection) and the lower-than-quality graphics (my PC is old and frail) and the glitches (it's a beta, it's ok), the game is pretty cool. Feels like Battlefield 2 did, needs vehicles, but those come later. My only complaint is Battlelog, EA/DICE's way around Bad Company 2's hideous in-game server browsers. Honestly, it is worse than the in-game browser. Maybe i'm just mad because i can't find a game that isn't full, but the whole site is a bit of a clusterfuck. Plus, you have to use it to play the singleplayer as well. Not cool, in my book.

It's not that Battlelog isn't functional, hell it even has some cool features, but it just isn't good. Load times (partly the result of the full servers and partly my internet connection) are atrocious, the whole site is in need of a drastic re-design focused on ease of use and not how cool it looks, and IT'S IN MY DAMN WEB BROWSER. That's my biggest issue. I hate opening more applications than i need to to run something. My PC is slow enough as it is without Origin, BF3, AND Google Chrome running all at once.

So, Escapists who bothered to pre-order BF3, what do you think? Am i insane? Am i making a big deal out of nothing? I'd prefer to keep things civil, if possible. And this should not turn into a MW3 versus BF3 thread.

TL;DR: I don't like Battlelog, it uses more RAM than i think necessary.

EDIT: I changed my mind about Battlelog. It's really not bad. It's faster than the old in-game browsers and it's not as much of a clusterfuck if you actually take the time to read.

I was going to make a thread about this but I managed to find yours through the search.

I got the beta somehow, I can't remember what I did to get it because I haven't pre ordered the game yet.

i7 930 Bloomfield quad 2.8 OC to 4.0
6 Gigs corsair ram at 1600 MHZ DDR3
750 W PSU
Nvidia GTX 470x2 SLI

The game itself is great, it feels very authentic and appropriately intense. I love how the movement feels real and all the physics I loved, namely ballistics, are still there.

As far as battlelog goes, honestly, it's better than I expected. At first I thought it was going to be this horrid system that would just cause pointless delays between switching from my browser to the game, but BF3 loads and switches so fast that I don't see it being a problem.

That's my thoughts, overall, I think I'm going to like it. Then again, it could just be that I have a higher end computer.

Battlelog doesn't bother me, but they have to sort out its lack of support for the mainstream Internet Security programs. You have to turn them off just to use it properly.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
Yeah, pretty much every aspect that isn't the game annoys me about battlefield 3, I think I'm going to end up just passing on the whole thing. Sucks too since I've been waiting for this for about a year now.

I actually see Battlelog as a really cool feature.

On my rig, I can get into a game quicker than I've ever been able to in either BF2, BC2 or any of the CoD games, in large part because the Battlelog just opens up way faster than any of those games will do.

Add to that how we now have stat tracking easily accessible, even from a machine that doesn't have the game installed.

Only downside I see is that you gotta use it for Single-Player.
But I can live with that.

As for the game itself, I've experienced a few lag issues in the Alpha and Beta, but I figure that's the servers and not the game.

Hit detection seems ok.

Some weapons need major nerfing though. SVD and Mk11 can be made into close-combat weapons just by fitting the Laser attatchment, leaving you able to fit a Foregrip as well as a Ballistic Scope.

Not kidding, that combination routinely wins out even against three people with AKs in close combat.

Battlelog has worked great for me, aside from one time, but then I learned they were rebooting and doing a quick update which took about thirty minutes. I can understand the issue with having a browser open at all times with the game given how much the game can already take up along with that hogging some resources.

Aside from that my only complaint against the beta is the rather shoddy map collision issues especially around the A capture point in the beginning of Metro. It's god awful around there, especially when people purposely clip into the ground to shoot you(rarely works at a distance).

So if they get rid of all the minor bugs people seem to be experiencing, it'll be a pretty solid game.

I just wish Caspian was open to everybody, because 64 player would've been great to test out.

I can't get BF3 for my PC...my video card sucks. :(

But my friend showed me the beta by using Battlelog and really, I was impressed with how quick he could get into a game just from going to the web browser. I think you guys who'll get it for the PC and run it will get a nice treat...

I'd give you my thought on the game if EA had sent me my fucking Beta Code, but for some reason Ireland seems to be have forgotten in this 'early access' deal.

Medal Of Honour just lost its only redeeming quality.

The game itself seems horridly under-polished. At least on the 360.

Glitches up the ass, load screens which have the chance of silently crashing then instantly loading... it's just not a good thing. Yes it's a beta, but it's also about four weeks until release, which is not enough time to fix all these bugs.

Actual gameplay is of fun, but so far it's just an "eh" to me. And gets underscored when you get stuck and fall out of the level.

And if anyone wants to know what the graphics are like, they're exactly like Bad Company 2's are on the 360.

PS3 or 360 or PC. My brother can download it early, even though it take 10 hours, and he had MOH.

It seems that people I shoot at can take an entire mag in the gut, yet I die by so much as a stern look. Really pisses me off.

Firstly, the ballistics still piss me off. I don't think anyone at DICE has ever actually fired a rifle at range. The bullets drop WAY too quickly, especially the sniper weapons. Those larger caliber rifles don't start dropping in a noticeable way until nearly 200 meters. DICE seems to think they start at ten.

Minor grips about classes i don't play aside, Battlefield 3 (the beta at least) is great, when the servers don't lag me out, but i imagine that will be fixed since BBC2 and MoH betas both suffered the same problem.

And Battlelog is actually much better than i expected. I gave it another chance and i really can't complain. I wish there were more servers, but it's a beta so whatever.

Had the same issue. Lag on the servers. I'm also sometimes getting a glitch from the lag where everything glitches in and out of existence. It's hard to explain, everything disappears then reappears. It's usually when i'm right in front of an enemy...

Dice already stated that the visuals would be compressed for the sake of the beta, so if you mean "unpolised" from a visual aspect, that's why. I forgot to mention the terrain, which you reminded me. Currently there's a lot of buggy places in the terrain where you can get stuck and it drives me bonkers.

The open beta starts tomorrow, so if you can get the PC version I would suggest it, because things like loading aren't an issue.

I agree, sniper shots seem to drop too soon, one of the things that always gets me with their games.

I guess my question would be: is there anything about this game that's good enough to justify signing up for Origin?

'cos as far as choices go, there are literally hundreds of shooters out there, and most of them don't insist on ass raping me.

BF3 is totally worth it. I hate EA as much as the next guy, but Origin is not as bad as everyone says. Plus BF3 is awesome.

I'm also not liking how bright the "scope glint" is. It isn't a glint, it's like someone is holding up a fucking Mag light and shining it in your eyes. Not only does it totally give away the sniper's position instantly, it's annoying as hell in a corridor where that's the only way to look. And then there's the red glow from the holo/reflex sights. Soooooo doesn't really happen. Plus their 1x or 2x sights, not sniper scopes, so for balance, it's pretty much irrelevant.

The tac-light is pretty cool, though. And so it the foregrip and bi-pod being optional.
