I guess this probably happens every day but I just need a little advice given the odd nature of this.

The account in question, I guess, was the one I made to try out World of Warcraft or play Diablo 2 or whatever. It actually doesn't matter because there's no credit card account or serious personal information tied to it.

I got an email from blizzard saying that the account was locked (I didn't even know it had been stolen) after quote "suspicious activity". Ten days ago I was notified by a warning called "too many attempts warning No. 57" that said that someone tried to access my account 403 times and thus it was locked even more I suppose.

I've never tried to reclaim the account or use the links in the Blizzard e-mail because I suspect the mails might be fakes laced with viruses and keyloggers and other dangers. Still, I wonder if I should be concerned that someone else has my account and if there are any steps I can take to shutdown said account permanently or if I should even bother. The criminal apparently cannot access my email account as the account was never unlocked after the first locking.

So what should I do?

First, you have to make sure it's legit. Try logging into your WoW account or whatever. If it works fine, the emails are fake, I get them all the time.

Two things. One, just ignore it and let the account locks do their thing. The thief will get bored and move on. Secondly, head to Blizz's site and file a ticket as such, I'm sure they'd be willing to close it.
Awesome. Thank you

THIS IS IN NO WAY A LEGITIMATE EMAIL FROM BLIZZARD.

Now that I've got that out f the way - you are almost certainly being phished.

DO NOT CLICK THE LINKS IN THE EMAILS.

Go to battle.net, and try to sign into the account. If it works, you're fine.

I get these e-mails non-stop. Hilariously they all go to an email account that's not at all associated with my battle.net profile.

they are a very common phishing scam.

I'm in luck. I've never accessed the links. I figured they might be fakes.

Anyway, I sent in one of those tickets to blizzard and specifically asked them to deactivate the account. Hope they take it seriously.

Calling Blizzard is also a good way to recover your accounts if you can provide them with the correct information and explain your situation. Though if they're busy be prepared to wait a while listening to the Tanaris theme.... Good luck to you and avoid those stupid 'attempt' warning emails... Gah they're so annoying.

I get emails like that every other damned day, mark it as spam, delete and move on with your life.
I get the exact same message (Warning No 57 too)as long as you dont click any of the links in the email you'll be fine.

Most definately this, actually I get emails almost with the exact wording that you described. They are phishing scams (or whatever they call them nowadays). I even get ones for Rift even tho I've never played that game. Blizzard will never email you to tell you your account is going to be locked. They will just lock it and you will have to contact them about the reason why.

I'm glad you got there first, I've been recieving those bloody e-mails for months, and I only played WoW once, got bored and stopped!

The number of times my account has been hacked is totally inconsistent. One day it's 57 times, the next it's 124, then back to 57 the next day!

I never believed them for a minute.

EDIT: Take a look at the actual link they've put in the e-mail (hover, don't click). It's the oldest trick scammers use, a link that looks legit, until you realise that where there should be slashes, there are dashes!

UPDATE: so remember I sent an email to Blizzard support asking them to deactivate my account? Those lazy jackasses just sent me one of their readymade responses about the dangers of phishing and spam mail.

I'm aware of the danger, Blizzard, now help me freaking do something about it! I swear, it's like they're holding out hope that I'll play WoW ever again. They even threw in a promotional prize for re-securing my account: a corehound of some use.
