A high degree of historical accuracy is probably asking too much from a Battlefield game. How could they possibly make such a game yet still satisfy the preferences of their core demographic...still, the end product looks like absolute dog-shit.

The game appears to be just one big clusterfuck of marketing compromises. France and Russia get omitted for 'Merica, prototype weapons take up the majority of available weaponry while bolt-actions are relegated to being sniper weapons, they've included absolutely ridiculous weapon attachments like red-dot sights (WTF), every animation looks like it is played in 1.5x speed, the player can operate relatively heavy, clunky weapons like they are plastic airsoft replicas, the tanks appear to drive and handle as well as their modern equivalents, zeppelins fly at a stupidly low altitude...cuz explosions, the overall map design does not seem to even vaguely resemble most WWI battlefields, particularly on the western front...I could go on and on but nobody really cares.

I agree with Zhukov, they should have just made Battlefield: Steampunk. It would have made sooo much more sense than BF1 (even the name is poorly thought out).

The best part about it, and the main reason why I won't even bother picking up this game on sale, is that EA will be dickheads, as usual, and block modders from fixing some of the most glaring issues. If a WWI Forgotten Hope style mod could be developed for BF1 quite a lot of people who will likely pass on this game would have eventually bought it.

The more I watch of BF1 gameplay the more clear it becomes that this game is going to be another BF game just with a WW1 skin. The original footage and info made it seem like this was going to be something new, something to shake the tired BF formula up a bit but as I see more and more lets play footage it becomes clear that this is just another BF game, just it has a whole bunch of WW1 skins thrown over it and that any real formula shake up is barely skin deep.

The one thing thing that does irk me somewhat is how ineffective the weapons seem to be and my main worry is that this will be used to disguise yet another BF game with shoddy hit detection.

Unlike you, I really was disappointed. I was really hoping for a AAA game in the style of Verdun, because the limited nature of weapons in WW I was one of the reasons I find it so brutal. You can't mow down people like an action hero unless you're shooting at people who are charging at trench, and at that point you'd feel more shitty than heroic.

But the thing that really bugs me is that I think they're going to try and make WW I heroic with their emphasis on more satisfying weapons. Now you could get away with that in WW II because you were kicking in the shit of Nazis, which everyone agrees is a good thing. WW I was just a massive mess, started by a clusterfuck of alliances and political fuck ups in which no one was really the bad guy. It earned the name "seminal catastrophe".

But no. It's just more of the gorram same. Just another fresh coat of paint. We're not going to be exploring how tragic it was, because France is DLC and Russia doesn't exist. Because why have a game about one of the greatest tragedies in human existance when you can have AMERICA FUCK YEAH! I know that Britian is still in there but why not France!? For fuck's sake, the western front half fought in France!

Don't get me wrong, it'll probably still be a fun game...just not the type I was looking for.

There are a lot of college aged dudebros that will be playing this though, so realism had to be spared for the sake of sales and popularity.

It's too bad the makers of Arma don't do more period piece type war shooters. BI has done the modern scene to death.

I'm not excited for Battlefield 1 because simply; its basically a retro WW-II shooter with shitter vehicles, shitter weapons and in order to make the game any fun at all they basically have to ignore how WWI actually went and make it play and feel like WWII, at which point why not just make a goddamn WWII game?

There is a reason why WWI is skipped in games for the most part, and it isn't due to tech - it was an atrocious war, hated by all sides, brutal, with little in the way or heroics or "awesome" battles and would play like crap for the most part.

WWII is popular is because it was full of wild and insane tech, vehicles were cool and diverse and widely available without being insane for gameplay, it had numerous Heroes/Heroics and interesting battles, it had fairly defined/clear bad/good guy divide and so on.
