Battlefield 3 issues

I write this thread after about a week of trial, error and failiure. I seriously want to ask for help, but I shouldn't have to. All other games worked perfectly on me, always. I have a great rig that can easily handle Battlefield 3 and somehow I manage to have all sorts of issues with it.

To start off, I couldn't play the game when I installed it. It basically said "random error: reinstall, not sure why but still do it anyway". So I tried repairing it first (obviously). It downloaded some patch which I expected that would fix it until it got stuck on 100%. So I cancelled the update, which it wouldn't, so I had to reinstall the game anyway(I really wanted to play this game at this point). The next day, I decided to scour every forum there was for a possible solution. I tried about 20 different things and I eventually found it: I had to update Internet Explorer. I repeat: I had to update Internet Explorer and the game didn't even give me the slightest clue. But hey, I could play the game at this point, so it was a mistake easily forgiven.

Next up, I play the game and appears to be almost unplayable. The sound stutters and skips, mutes randomly, does all sorts of stuff but just the wrong stuff. It looks like lag but it still runs at a solid farerate. Why? I havn't figured out yet. I did find a way to solve this (amongst other things) on http://segmentnext.com/2011/10/25/battlefield-3-crashes-lag-stuttering-low-fps-graphics-origin-and-fixes/ [this website]. To sum up the solution: I'm supposed to alter my audio settings to properly play the game. I'm a music producer and I've got all my equipment set up on a different setting. I'm NOT going to change this setting every time I switch between gaming and making music. There HAS to be another solution. Heck, this problem shouldn't even be there.

Then there's the multiplayer. The very reason to buy this game. It doesn't only suffer from the audio problem, but also massive lag. I figured that's the reason why they don't show ping rates in the score menu. Somehow, the server selection doesn't seem to care about ping either. Someone at DICE *somehow* must've reckoned ping isn't very important. Right, let's get on with this. So I found the solution to this too; here [https://help.ea.com/article/online-ports-for-battlefield-3]. "Thanks EA! You're so helpful."

This is kind of like EA saying "we know we didn't make a good game, so here's what YOU have to do to fix the problems we created, good luck. Oh, and there's a guide on this particularly cheesy looking website that's stuffed with advertising. Oh, and you actually have to download some freeware from this website as well." There's no way I'm downloading anything from that website just to fix the problems they've created.

I don't regret buying this game. Heck; when I was in this lag-free server yesterday, I had an amazing time and it was hella fun like it should be. But it's unplayable in this state.

Am I missing something crucial here? Would opening up the ports fix the problem (even in single player)? Do you think EA / DICE are going to fix these problems and should I just wait for a month before playing this game? Are you experiencing the same problems? What did you do?

I'm clueless. I'm going to lay in a corner, sobbing.

Wait a bit to see if stuff gets patched is all I can tell you.

My only problem was occasionally getting booted out of a game due to a Punkbuster issue, but that was a simple fix, quite literally download a 2MB file and pasting it into a folder.

When did Battlelog stop displaying ping when you searched for a server?

Because it displayed it during the beta. Was that taken out or something?

Well, it does show "ping" and then shows this connection thing which phones have, and it's always the same thing, always pale grey. Not particularly helpful. Unless the connection is shitty all across the board.

I have an ATI card, so that's not going to do me any good.

Punkbuster is a crappy piece of software. It used to kick me out of BF2142 servers instantly. Right.. I see a trend here.

theres a little lag every now and then, and you really need to be able to back out of a lobby/server to join a new one without going to dashboard, but other than that its pretty darn good.

Did you try searching for an empty server then arranging the results by ping joining the first one on the list? I was having connection issues during the beta and that's what I had to do to join a game. They usually filled up pretty quickly. There's always lag issues the first few weeks the hot new multiplayer game comes out. It was the same thing when Bad Company 2 came out. Never had issues with punkbuster. But isn't there a way to filter out servers that use it?

I know PCs have better graphics, and modding, and all that, but it's issues like this that make me play on consoles.

Still, it sucks. Hopefully you get it working.

I'll try, but it still doesn't help, having to wait for other players to join. I wish the game would always let you screw around until there's enough players (like BF2 / BF2142). Ah well, it's the slightest issue, really.

I just hope it's starters issues. I just think it's wierd how it's entirely playable to *most* other people. Apparently it is sold over 5 million times already, that's a lot (and nearly double the avarage of all the Battlefield games combined btw, the avarage of that is around 3 million.

Well that's just the nature of PC gaming. Everyone's hardware is different so it's impossible for game companies to account for every issue that will come up. I never had to wait more than a minute or two for enough people to join. This is just a way to hopefully guarantee the least amount of lag. You might still be able to get away with joining a slightly full server after you arranged them by ping. But empty server lowest ping is your best bet at least until they get more servers up. Besides Dice has usually been pretty good about patches and updates. They added the red dot and 4x scope to the G3 and M14 in Bad Company 2 after months of saying they were never going to do that.

Don't panic, MW3 comes out in a week :) then we won't have to play this terrible game ever again!

Seriously though the game is amazing when it works though whoever thought it was a good idea to build a game in a fucking website needs to be fired. Out of a cannon. Into the sun! :p

That wouldn't be too harsh.

It's creative though (not that that's ever been a good excuse for screwing things up) ..and the loading times are actually pretty good. Way better then I expected.

And that comment about PC gaming is a big "fair enough". And DICE is not Blizzard (kind of thank god for that).

I can't actually join a multiplayer game, it just gets stuck on connecting, or playing! with a black loading screen. Much rage has been had.

I had some stuttering while turning, turns out battlefield 3 really doesn't like NVIDIA cards so NVIDIA released a new patch that fixed it.

The sound problem is probably another driver issue.
Really? But EA did loads of marketing stuff with NVidia before the release. I would have thought they'd tune it specifically for them.

I've had minimal problems, occasionally getting booted out of servers but that's been fixed by a server side patch. I hope things work out for you OP, it's a fantastic game.
are you running any obscure hardware? I'm trying to think of a reason why you're having so many issues.

I've had a lot of problems with this game. First, the servers. They have been down at least three times since release. It takes at least five tries to get into a game without it saying "couldn't connect to the server". My squad can never get into a game together, whatsoever. The leader will connect but the rest won't, or we get separated into two different teams. Never the same team. I think the game servers figured that my friends and I would completely dominate the lobby in a squad so they will not put us together or something.
