Battlefield 3 needs an online pass, unsurprisingly.

Who here thought that after things like Dead Space 2 and NFS: Hot Pursuit EA wouldn't use the online pass on the biggest game there releasing this year. Well, they are. New copies will get a code for access to the multiplayer, and used buyers will have to spend and extra $10 on a pass to the multiplayer. Designer Alan Kertz confirmed on Twitter today.

Personally I think that this is a very, very douchey decision by EA. BF3's multiplayer is the biggest part of the game and restricting access to it to a lot of people is not a good way to keep people liking you (not that anyone liked EA anyway). They should of just given new players say a gun in multiplayer, or an extra co op mission, but multiplayer is essentially the biggest part of the game and anyone who buys it used doesn't get it unless they hand over money.

Bah, there are better ways to "fight" used sales than locking out multiplayer on a game.

Oh well. EA is back to its old self, I see.

It's the old story of taking away instead of giving something extra. They'll eventually figure it out.

I will never understand the justification of online passes. The online play the used buyer is taking advantage of has already been paid for by the initial buyer.

You don't understand because:

A) You're young and don't understand what it means to earn and make money

B) You're an anti-capitalist and to you profit = evil

C) Both of the above

I don't think he meant what you think he meant. Go watch the Jimquisition on used games, he explains it better than I could.

OT: This is why I Steam.

What is? On Steam every single game has an "Online Pass" and is directly tied to your account?
Wait for the Christmas sale, but it for less than a used copy, and it comes with online.

Well, I actually expected the online pass for Battlefield 3.

The selfish response to all of this is that I'm getting it new anyway, so as long as I can play it, thats all that matters to me.

I'm actually getting really annoyed at the people that complain about online passes. They're inevitable, and if you don't like them, then there are better things to do about it than complain about it on a forum. Email the company, tell them about it in a polite manner, and maybe they'll agree with you.

Not complaining, getting annoyed. Sorry for disrespecting your all knowing mind with my obvious lack of intelligence.

Hey, now. There is no cause to be rude, now is there? Your words and tone make it sound very much like you are complaining.

I'm actually just trying to give advice to people that WOULD complain. Instead of doing it here, do something about it! Sorry if my post came off as complaining.

Fair enough.

Personally, I buy most all my games new, and I don't often buy multiplayer games, but the online pass business still bothers me. As I said, there are alternatives to putting up a block to anyone who didn't buy new. This is just the most lazy answer to what is arguably a problem

Wait, Battlefield 3 is being released on consoles? People are actually going to buy it on consoles? What a waste of potential.

As a long time (almost) exclusively PC game player, I can tell you this: get used to online passes, they are the way of the future. You think any publisher wants anything but the complete destruction of the second hand games industry? Mark my words, the next generation of consoles will tie your games to one single account and will be almost exclusively digital distribution driven. You don't like it? It doesn't matter. Most people will just go out and buy games new or pay for the online pass.

Not an option for BF3 unless Steam or EA change their policy regarding DLC.

Punishing not only people who buy use but people who have crappy internet connections. Then again, I think I'm in the extreme minority when it comes to having both problems. Still, the stick won't always win EA customers and I hope they see that sooner rather than later.

It's purely to combat used game sales. Developers get nothing at all from them, and game stores (i.e. Gamestop) make a killing off of them, and don't even give the devs a portion. This way, they at least get something out of the deal, although it's disappointing that the gamers are the ones suffering.
