PC Gamer has reported that Battlefield 3 is not coming to Steam. [http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/07/18/battlefield-3-not-coming-to-steam-says-retailer/]
Naturally this is probably because of EA's own digital distribution platform, Origin, being this way, Battlefield 3 has been confirmed to be on Gamersgate, Direct2Drive and Origin.

I buying it from PC world, i already pre-ordered.
EA's ORIGIN WILL FAIL.
Steam is Better because VALVE listens to the community.
they listen to the players issues,
Refund things quickly, and best of all, have the greatest sales of all time.

I did cancel my pre-booked bf3 when I heard I would not be able to install games that used Origin one year after I first activated them.

I love how they're always talking about how they're going to beat Modern Warfare 3, and then they pull this. Because we always know that the best way to get tons of sales is to not put your game up for sale on a really popular platform like Steam. I wonder when they'll announce that the console versions won't be sold in big name retail chains like GameStop, Walmart, and Best Buy or online sites like Amazon and that you'll have to order it from two obscure sites nobody's ever heard of or EA themselves.

Wait what? Once a key is activated on Origin its only good for a year before having to buy it again or something? Am I getting this right? You have a source?

Can you get a disc PC version then link it to steam?
If you mean registering the CD key in steam. No, you could still run it through steam, just as a shortcut tho, so steam wouldn't have anything to do with actually running the game.

*Walks into GameStop and looks around for BF3, then goes up to counter.*

Me: Where's Battlefield 3 for ps3? (console version for the sake of the thing.)

Clerk: Oh Sorry, we don't have any of those, you will need to drive that newly made: Origin Store that only sells EA games. We will no longer have EA games in stock.

Me: How many people know about Origins?

Clerk: Beats me, I think your the thirtyth person I told.

-----------

Can't wait for this to happen.

Well, I'd like to say I'm surprised, but I'm really not. Still, they're trying to promote their own digital distribution service so fair play to them I suppose.

Although maybe it's the same reason as the "business terms" thing with Valve/Steam. Which I suppose would make sense considering it's still going to be available on other services

Oh, EA just picked up the idiot ball, ran with it and scored an own goal. Morons. Guess it's Modern Warfare: 3 for me =D

EDIT: That disclaimer says "AT LEAST" one year. Not "Only"

Oh god damn it EA, you bunch of dick brained dumb fuckers. I was looking forward to BF3, but by the looks of things even the retail games that require Origin could end up having this shit.

After Dice has done some really good PR for the PC crowed, EA has come along and just stuck their dick in the pie.

Note that that EULA says "at least" not "only" one year. Still a stupid thing to put in there. what happens after 366 days?

Looks like I'm getting Skyrim for PC and BF3 for console instead of both on PC, how disappointing...

Still EA has screwed the pooch on this one, this is just another example of how out of touch and how little they care about the community. With the history they have of just screwing over the community, building a service that will rely on the community to stay afloat you really think the guys that you have screwed over countless times will really come back for more?

I wish all companies did that T.T Anyways, onto the main topic, I have a feeling that EA is starting to be a bit pretentious, thinking it doesn't need Steam.

I think Origin will be the best for all of us in the end.

Why? Because Steam has not had any real competition up till this point, and will force Valve and EA to find better and cheaper ways to do everything.

In the end, the consumer wins.
