I can appreciate that Steam once did the same thing to garner support for itself as a digital distribution service. But EA are gambling heavily if they think that forcing people to use your service in the hopes of luring people to adopt it as their primary digital distribution service is something that's going to work in a market where there are already several competing download systems, as it's more likely to be interpreted as simply an additional headache. People don't need to be introduced to the wonders of digital distribution anymore, as Steam did, however heavy-handedly several years ago. What EA should be doing is offering a MORE user friendly experience than Valve.

And while they're at it, they should turn down the thermostat in hell...

I wasn't going to buy it anyway, but I don't see what the big deal is with EA wanting to run their own client software.

As several people have stated before me, Valve does exactly the same thing with Steam - what makes them so special? EA don't have as good a standing within the gaming community as Valve, sure, but that doesn't mean they are incapable of providing an efficient online service.

Also, if your computer can run BF3, it can run Origin just fine. Deal with it.

Ugh does this mean i will need it for mass effect 3? I really don't want to install it just so i can play a game, at least with EA download manager you can choose to not install it during setup.

I may have more than enough power to run all modern games on high but i've always liked my computer running as little as possible in the background (and i know alot of PC gamers are like this even if they have top of the line hardware), for example i only have iplayer, steam and coretemp running in the background which aren't nesscary for my system to run.

F*&k it. How many new releases are going to have this kind of crap?! It's like everyday I hear about a pending release incorporating some form of "always on", or other DRM measure. First was Spore, then Assassins Creed, and instead of learning from it, now EVERY publisher wants to have this shit.

The ones who started it, is everyone who bought HL2 and installed shitty Steam on the day of IT's launch (inc. me), which just shows all the publishers that "hey, if people want it bad enough we can get away with *anything*!" So now id, Blizzard, EA, and god knows who else are jumping on the same wagon. And I really, really, really wanted Diablo III, BF3, Mass Effect 3, etc. This year might signify my throwing out of this hobby. Before anyone tells me I'm a crybaby, I'm stuck in an apartment with a shoddy connection at BEST, and I'm lucky if even the electricity stays on for a whole gaming session, let alone my internet ok?

A lot of people are saying valve did the same and require it for their games and what not. Which is all true but the fact is valve is the shit and they earned loyalty with sales and good games and franchises. EA has done nothing but poop out unfinished sequels to numbers of games and kill franchises and companies like westwood and their cnc games. THAT is the real reason people are rejecting this idea. EA blows. Battlefield is just ONE of the VERY few gems they made, most others suck and make people disappointed and hate them more.

Most people will accept it. Including many of the outraged. This is a trend we're unlikely to stem as long as everyone needs their shooter of the month fix.

hmm, guess Ill keep my eye out for any other games releasing around bf3's launch and if any of them catch my eye Ill get them instead

I'll take my money elsewhere then EA. I wasn't going to buy it anyway ever since it was revealed it wasn't coming to Steam, but now you've really nailed the coffin shut.

Son of a *****, this is why digital distribution sucks and will always suck because every damn publisher wants to force you to be teathered to some online program that has to have your personal info instead of just letting you play the game.

I have NO sympathy for companies anymore when they whine about piracy.

Oh no! Oh my god! Oh geeze!

Hey, I really don't actually care and will still buy this game.

To be perfectly honest, having a program running in the background these days is less than an issue.. And if the program is put together properly (ie Steam as it looks now), it might actually be a benefit for most people... It's just perculiar to me that EA want to bring in their own service so badly.. Sure, Steam might need some competition, but initiate that competition on the basis of proper features and better prices, instead of exclusives and requirements...
And this is different from Valve's approach to Steam with Half Life 2, how? You had to have Steam to play HL2, otherwise, nobody gives two shits about Steam, and it probably dies. You need a big draw. Honestly, EA is going about this exactly the correct way one would in trying to launch such a service.

You did the same for Half Life 2, right? Right? ...right? Probably not. Which means your bitching is 100% unfounded.

Really? Did you guys really not see this coming? Valve did the exact same thing with Half-Life 2. The only real difference is that Origin isn't a new concept, its an alternative service. EA has been fucking crafty to come up with this. I can see it now.. a meeting between the top execs at EA, one of them says "I fucking hate Steam. How are we ever going to get into the digital distribution market when no one wants anything else?!" hours of frustration and dead end plots to get Gabe Newell arrested for molesting little boys pass... suddenly one of them yells: "I've fucking got it!!! Someone get Dice on the phone! Its time they made us a proper Battlefield sequel."

That is pretty much how it would have gone down. If Valve can get people using their platform by making the most anticipated game in ages exclusive to their platform why can't EA? I don't like it either but its a good move by EA.

Considering I already have EADM why Origin? I don't care it doesn't do much of anything but sit there... I don't want that shit. After I got EADM I don't know what happened but it deleted a bunch of .dll files EA took 3 months to get to me on.

Yeah this is a dealbreaker for me, still, I already figured it was going to go this way.
As other users have already said, Steam does the same thing and no amount of "But the sales..."
or other forms of Valve leghumping will change my mind on that front.

Seriously, people around here need to understand that their experience does not reflect that of the userbase as a whole.

Won't be forced into installing anything.
Leave me to my opinion.

So much origin hate. Its funny how history repeats itself; Steam got the same kind of reception when it was released, now Valve could commit war crimes and no one would care.
I used Origin for the BF3 alpha, and didnt find it to be any worse than steam. Sure, you can argue the functionality and features of steam, but you go and count the updates steams had since it launched. Hundreds, if not thousands of the buggers. Origin may be late to the game but you can bet that EA are gonna make sure it works well.
