I don't understand what the point of this is at all.

It doesn't stop pirates and acts as an inconvenience no matter how you try to slice it.

Meh it could be allot worse they could have booted dedi servers and cut a ton of functionality for a half assed port to PC.
(sounds familiar)
I already preordered this one and even with this news I don't think I will ever regret it.

hey, it's much better than having day1 'DLC'
i mean, BF2 had secureROM for 4 and a bit years (until 1.5 aka AWESOMESAUCE THE PATCH) and it still ran well enough.
DLC+MP=divided player base=BAD.
FREE MAPS IN PATCHES=RELATIVELY united playerbase=GOOD.
and yeah, steam is okay, but i definitely do NOT want any non-valve game to ever rely on it..

Whatever, just wash your hands.
ugh annoying but maybe not enough to keep me from buying it altho I dont see the point, the game will still be on torrent before it launches and adding this shit costs money... I guess it makes investers happy or something

Abedeus, you've been here over a year now, and not once have you run into me spouting off a tirade on why I hate Steam? Shit dude, I do that almost once a month here.

Long-story short, I don't like launcher apps, I don't like their requirement of an online connection for offline play, and I don't like digital-only purchases. And to take a game like FEAR2, which I purchased off a shelf at my local Future Shop, and then tell me I still have to use Steam, pisses me off more than a red-headed stepchild.
Er what? There is no requirement of an internet connection to play offline. Steam can run in an 'offline' mode that will let you continue playing your games, just needa download them via online, once and only once. Then you're good to go. Just have to have a connection for online games. Not to mention the steam community/friend system is neat and easy to keep track of. And I find the browser kinda nifty, even if slow. A simple shift-tab in-game and that's all. Don't have to keep downsizing(Which can cause alittle issues with textures and crap.)

Just canceled my Pre-order. I'm sad, especially since I just Pre-ordered this morning.

But I will not purchase SecuROM software, ever. This DRM needs to DIE, today.

Hot damn! If what they say is true, it's even less intrusive than Steam! And they even let us choose whether to use the disk or online check-up!

I had no intrest in Bad Company 2 (not exactly my cup of tea) untill now, but i may buy it just for the sake of supporting reasonable approach.

I don't see the point of a 3 decade "limit" to be honest... What's the difference for them between 30 years and lifetime? But hey, seems reasonable enough.
The program probably dosen't allow to make one activation valid for ever.

Wow, I take back everything I said about EA turning a new leaf. Though now they are just letting the developers screw us, not doing it themselves.

Wait, why do you complain about Steam? It's one of the best gaming-related things installed on my PC. Better than XFire.

Strange, because I can tell you right now that I see a "Go offline" mode... You don't have to be online, unless you want Steam cloud. But that's Source/Valve games only.

Most "cracked" servers for Battlefield suck anyway, the ranked official servers off so much more. So buying the original is totally going to happen, for me at least.

Wait, you mean buying the disc means we actually get the right to.... play the game?

Amazing, it's a revolution, this kind of wacky forward thinking could be the making of the industry!

PS: I'm buying this, SecutRom it may be, but it's less intrusive than anything else coming around in the next six months

That seems slightly acceptable to me. I'd rather they go with something like Steam as that works and it actually has interesting features in updating the game and so on.

This DRM seems fine.

If you have internet, you can activate online and play without the disk.

If you don't have internet when installing the game, you can activate with the disk and put up with the disk check.

You can even activate online and later on decide to reinstall using the offline method. And vice versa.

After activation servers go down, you can revert to the disk check method.

@ Khell_Sennet

And that illustrates why I don't buy many Steam games!

I'm moving next week and I don't know the internet situation in the house I'm moving into. Hope that doesn't happen to me!

For my roommate last night, he couldn't play his games. First, our net was down. Then, when our net came back, Steam went down for server work. True story, and couldn't have come at a better time to illustrate my point. The same game, Tropico 3, I bought retail and he bought through Steam. I could play it, he could not. Offline Mode did not work for it, even though the game is entirely single-player and does not itself need any internet connection. So his great and wonderful Steam prevented him from gaming the whole night, while I got to sit there smugly pointing out that I could (and did) play.

One point for retail, for working when our own net was down. A further point for retail for working when Steam was down.

Retail 2 : Steam 0
...Sounds like an issue on your side, then?
I don't believe anyone else has problems playing their games offline. I sure as hell don't.

Why do red-headed stepchilds piss you off?
