Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Will Revisit World War II

Think that Battlefield: Bad Company 2 [http://www.amazon.com/Battlefield-Bad-Company-2-Xbox-360/dp/B001QXNBJM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1278699912&sr=1-1] will be all about the "modern warfare" all the time? Think again.

It's somewhat of a truth self-evident these days: World War II games have been done to death. Storming the beach at Normandy is old hat; raising the flag on Iwo Jima is yawn-inducing. Almost every major FPS series is moving away from battling the Third Reich these days, whether moving into the realm of modern-day combat (Medal of Honor [http://www.amazon.com/Call-Duty-Modern-Warfare-Xbox-360/dp/B00269QLI8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1278694263&sr=1-1]) or other historical campaigns (Treyarch's rumored Vietnam-era Call of Duty). EA Dice's upcoming Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is no exception, set squarely on the battlefields of the modern day ...

... or is it?

According to the ESRB explanation [http://www.esrb.org/ratings/synopsis.jsp?Certificate=28597] of the game's "M for Mature" rating, BFBC2 will actually start out during the Pacific Campaign of the Second World War before jumping through time to the modern day: "In single-player mode, players conduct missions on an unnamed Japanese island during World War II and then move into the modern day through jungles, deserts, and snowy terrain."

One can't help but wonder if the WW2 missions will tie into the game's plot somehow, or if they're just there because Dice was all "Oh hey, we still like WW2, let's put something in there."

The ESRB explanation also contains this little tidbit about the game's M rating beyond the standard violence, swearing, etc. "There are also close-up depictions of knife-stabbing (flesh-impact sounds) and melee attacks with a power drill." Okay, I think I'm just about sold on the game now. Power drill melee combat? That's kind of awesome.

Still can't get the beta to work on my PC without swapping constantly between a psuedo-windowed mode and full-screen. Ah well, if the beta doesn't have the drill combat maybe it's for the best.

So, like some kind of flashback sequences? Maybe the main villain is a WW2 vet or something. And you live his past. That'd be cool, and you know it.

Well, considering the drill could make walls explode in the first game, I always wondered how a melee fight would work with it.

And so long as the whole game isn't set in WW2, I'm fine.

Wake Island/Atoll? DICE seem to just love that map to death

Actually reading the post with a bit more care suggests "an unnamed Japanese island"...hmm intriguing!

The drill combat is in the beta. Roll Engineer and you get it as one of your kit items. Drilling campers is second only to using the defibrillator to kill someone in a WTFPwnage moment after reviving team-mates. I can only imagine the rage on the other end of my paddles.

Also, there's an achievement for BF:BC2 for the drill: The Dentist. Get a headshot with the drill.

WWII was dull. When I ask my Granddad what it was like he's always saying "Oh it was really boring. All those street battles, tank assaults, and storming of bunkers. I mean we didn't even have cruise missiles. In the end Germany didn't surrender they just got bored and quit."

WWII is FAR more interesting than Modern Conflict. It was war on an epic scale never seen before or since. Sure fictional modern war can be fun, but the realisation that all the things you're doing in a good Historical WWII game actually happened really touches me.

Well that'd be cool and all if I could actually get the beta to work right :/

Actually, I think thats pretty cool... with every FPS franchise and their mum moving away from the WW2 franchise, now is the best time to (at least partially) jump back into the fray.

Your grandpa is just trying to sound cool and Band Of Brothersy. "I'm not a hero but I served with some" I bet he stabbed some Nazi dude in a gasmask with an American flag and then saved John Wayne's life by throwing a cigar at Rommel's eye then cutting the rope holding the chandelier whisking them to safety.

Modern Warfare is all about complex moral choices and fire missions and slo-mo with dramatic music. Where all the badguys are named after complex dances

Well, considering it has been in basically every battlefield game except Bad Company, it seems they do love it.

Granted the community loves it to, and it was so requested that they even added it in Battlefield 2142.

Yes, but if you've been playing WWII games since you were very young; you've got to admit that those games have become quite boring now. This is why it's refreshing to play a war game taking place in a more modern time frame. Hell, Treyarch's game taking place in Vietnam would be better than another WWII game.

The "unamed island" could be Wake Island. It's been in nearly every PC battlefield. I don't think there's going to be a multiplayer map of it though....................yet.
