So I was thinking while playing Company of Heroes with my sniper missing with such frequency I thought he was carrying a hip flask. "I could shoot better then that (in a video game)" then I thought Wait... that actually sounds like a good idea.
Ok so say you had a game like CoH and you played it online, but here's the kicker your units could be controlled by other people online. So say a one on one match you have the two people fighting each other and people join in. Well from units that have been built they can choose to be one of the men in the until (or the tank or what not) Well the commander could still give orders and (hopefully) the person now playing as this guy would accept the commanders ability to plan and see the field.
It actually seems really easy to implement (ignoring all the ridiculous gameplay issues just bubbling beneath the surface) because CoH's graphics still hold up at close so you would just have to add a FPS engine under the existing stuff (I know it's not as easy as easy things normally are but compared to making a new game it's much more cost efficient)

Its been done before and doesnt work. People dont follow orders blindly like the PC does and since you cant actually rely on your guys to soak up X amount of damage from Y enemy you dont know how much time you have to flank etc.

When was it done before?
(not doubting you, just curious)

And in company of heroes most guys die after one or two shots just like in FPSs it's not like command and conquer where the x and y is in play

Um, this is pretty much how the newer Battlefield games are supposed to work. The Commander is basically "an RTS player" who looks at the map, orders people around and drops supplies and junk.

That would be a amzing idea but there are a few problems

1. You would have to make the A.I really smart for it to be a challenge to human conrtolled characters.

2. It's very possible that many people won't listen to order's.

I would say that's the main problem (number 2) I think it could be solved by almost a kick button that you click and then click on the unit acting retarded.
This idea would only work with a voice system implemented too or all the ideas commander and unit would be too abstract sure the minimap would show what the commander would want you to do, but not why
