Hey guys recently my anime club president received a suggestion for members of the club to apply to be in the reality tv show "Beauty and the geek Australia" http://www.beautyandthegeek.com.au/ ( link ). I was wondering if i should apply because to me i absolutely think i am a geek but i don't really know what i should speak about the video audition and i don't look like the classic geek. I kind of look indie with a punk flair. Probably the most critical thing is that i'm not like SUPER SMART i am quick on my feet, learn things really easy and i'm good at math/science/English but not the 99% student more like 85-90.

tl;dr : Should i apply for Beauty and the geek Australia, and if yes what should i say in my video audition?

You should not, since its a show about pandering to bad stereotypes.

but i don't mind being pandered about as a bad sterotype :D! it looks real fun. My geekness at the most is tv shows, movies, anime, manga, comic books and extremely bad soical abilities :(. so just saying that will be enough?

Unless you are the ultimate geek you won't be chosen. They choose people from the super extream end of the geek scale and the extream end of the stupid scale.

I guess so but I wouldn't recommend it as it looks like the bad type of reality t.v.

This.

Seriously, if you want to be chosen, you have to mislead them into thinking that you are (even) more of a geek than you really are. I understand you have to submit a video, so it shouldn't be that hard, but you should ask yourself if that's really what you want.

Agreed.

I can't stand reality shows, let alone ones that reflect negatively on the community I've come to be a part of. Though if you're willing to go ahead nonetheless, I wish you luck.

You don't have to be "SUPER SMART" to be a 'Geek', that's a 'Nerd'. Read this for more classifications:

What, like a hipster or a theater kid? Go for it, those subspecies of geekdom are almost as universally recognized as the Trekkie or the Weeaboo. You could probably ace the video audition by wearing vintage clothes, talking about shit bands no one cares about, complaining about mainstream music, and sprinkling in these magic words at the end of every few sentences:

"You've probably never heard it. It's really underground."

If that's you in your photo. You don't fit the bill, and I bet few people in your Anime Club do. Anime isn't really a geeky activity, not in the sense of the stereotype.
You're kidding, right?

You should go for it. Hell, you 'might' even get some tail! Or, at the very least, always be teased to have it in reach, but won't get it.

... I've watched too much porn, haven't I? Eurgh....

I dunno. It could be fun. At least try.

Do you want to? If yes then go ahead. If no then congrats you aren't being involved in a stupid project. Do what you want, it doesn't really matter what we think.

Don't do it. I'm convinced it's not really a reality TV show. They interview "geeks", then tell douches to pretend to have those interests, only to slowly reveal their douchebaggery at the end of the season.

As much as reading the name of that show kind of annoyed me... I don't know why, it just did, but I'm going to write something anyway. The hell is it always beauty and the beast and the frog prince and beauty and the geek and all this, is there no hope for ugly girls?

Start with some kind of "y helo thar" *wink* or overly formal and awkward greeting.

You have to make yourself look more geeky than your avatar. It doesn't matter because I'm thinking they'll want guys who are "hollywood homely" i.e. guys who would be kind of attractive if it weren't for easily fixable non-conformist style choices or demeanor which they'll probably "set right" at the end of the show. Yes, I'm pandering stereotypes of bad reality TV that panders to extreme social stereotypes.

Display whatever merchandise you have with pride. The more extreme, the better. Like these pillows. You could even put some suggestive stains on them.

Get some geek glasses (think of the glasses that were fasionable in 2001. The classic geek is now hipster. You don't want to be "geek-chic"), hawaiian style shirts that look like they're emblazoned with cheesy power metal album artwork, and get in the habit of unnecessarily raising your top lip. Go rub your face on an escalator handrail or a keyboard at the library and then spray some olive oil on it. Acne almost guaranteed. Also, if you don't have a mental condition of some sort, fake one. People just love to stare at people with any kind of amusing disorder. Actually, I don't know, disregard everything I've said, it's ridiculous, decide for yourself. =P

The photo's... Especially of that one sodding huge shelf filled with dem comic books.

That's not geekery. That's just plain obsessive.

Then what is the "stereotype" of geekery?

The only difference I can see between anime "enthusiasts" and your run of the mill sci-fi geeks, comic book geeks, historical reenactment geeks, and roleplay geeks are cultural influences. Put a superman cape or starfleet uniform on them and re-jacket their comics and they're no different from these fine specimens.
