I was thinking Left 4 Dead 2, seeing as it was the last game I played. Which means I have to pull from all of Valve's catalog.
Which, at first, seemed fine. I thought, "Hmm. There's the eight survivors from Left 4 Dead. There's Chell and company. Gordon, Alyx, Dog, and the rest. The Team Fortress gang...."
But then, I thought of Dota 2.
Yeah, uh...my "Valve-themed Smash Bros" roster would be god damned ridiculous. Way too many to pick from and far too many to exclude.
Though, if I had to pick three "must haves", I think they'd be as follows:
Because, really....it would almost feel wrong not to include him.
I'm thinking she could be something like the Poke Trainer, calling in turrets and AI cores to fight for her. Plus, I love the idea of fighting as the franken-turret.
The idea of smashing stuff as D0g just sounds like too much fun. Besides, one of his B moves could be throwing a RollerMine that sticks to people. Which also sounds like too much fun.

I thought of the "Munchers" educational games that I played as a kid (Number Munchers and Word Munchers). They were developed by MECC, the Minnesota Educational Computing Consortium/Corporation. Which three MECC characters would make for the most iconic smashing brothers? Hmm . . .
1. Trogglus Normalus - the first troggle (hazard/"enemy") you encounter in the munchers games. Aww, he's so cute and purple and nostalgia-inducing! He's a slow fighter, but he's got a powerful bite, I guess? If we're true to the original games, he would pretty much just shuffle around doing nothing.
2. Mackinaw Trout - from Odell Lake, which bored me. Mackinaw was the biggest and baddest fish in the lake. He's even better at biting things than Trogglus Normalus, but he's total crap on land. Each arena must have plenty of water to accommodate Mack (and any other fishy contenders.)
3. Dysentery - that ruthless killer from The Oregon Trail. Again, mostly travels by water, so it's looking like Super MECC Brothers is gonna be an amphibious sort of affair. Once it infects you, it will cause crazy damage over time, and it will leave behind a tombstone - just off to the side of the road over there - when it kills you. Maybe it's like the game Worms, and you can zap the graves with lightning bolts to get your doods back . . . or maybe a "green muncher protagonist" character (if s/he makes the roster, which s/he probably would) can "munch" sums or words off the tombstones to power up / regain life?

I thought of Armored Core (surprise, right), so then I get Dark Souls which is the obvious choice and Enchanted Arms, which I didn't even know FROM made. Those are the three I've played from them and the only other one I can think of is King's Field, which I haven't played.
I would expect Nineball, White Glint and maybe some fan favourites like Berlioz/Supplice, May Greenfield/Merrygate and Jack-O/Foxeye from Armored Core, Karin, Raigar and Yuki from Enchanted Arms (heavy melee, light melee/water elemental, light ranged is a decent spread of styles), and Dark Souls is a tough one, but I'd like to see Gwyndolin (ranged caster), Solaire (all-rounder), Smough or Tarkus (tank melee), and Oswald of Carim (would have some great mechanics). If Artorias wasn't such a badass I'd include him too, with Sif as an assist. As far as other assists, Golem for Tarkus, Siegmeyer of Catarina for Solaire (or, Sieglinde for Siegmeyer would be cool too), Ornstein for Smough and Velka's crow for Oswald.

Hahaha holy shit! I thought of Dragon Age. I can safely put Shepard (ME), Hawke (DA) and Revan (SW Kotor) amongst the three top characters. Maybe Revan would be a problem with the whole Disney situation now, but let's disregard that, anyway, Bioware/EA, there would be TONS of characters, probably the biggest fighting library ever with a decent place for some heavy "make your own character" thing going on 
Hmmmm...I got the Elder Scrolls series, so I suppose you'd have to avoid putting any of the main player characters in there because of their amorphous nature. You could have Daedric lords as combatants if you went by their portrayals in shrines. Malacath would love that sort of thing, so I'd have to include him. Sheogorath would be an interesting antithesis. The third contender would probably have to be John Cleese Mehrunes Dagon, because he has many arms and likes destroying things very much indeed.

Actually a fighting game based off of the soul series could be awesome, Like ornstein and smough vs the old monk in the tower of latria would be pretty balling.
