Manuka honey seems to be really good
But they are expensive so I just use honey lozenges.

The advice I always get with a sore throat is to gargle once or twice a day with tepid salt water.

Sugar is a very good antiseptic and will do wonders. Take teaspoon of honey every now and then and suck on it (don't just eat it all in one go), or put it in tea or hot milk. It tastes really good and will fix your throat right up.

You power through with brute defiance and show that sore throat that you're not afraid of it and that you can handle worse!

Hot coffee and granola bars - hot and scratchy! Hot and scratchy!

Alternatively, warm milk with honey mixed in works wonders. I've got a bad cold myself at the moment so I feel your pain. That is, until I make myself some miracle milk.

This far before someone mentions cough drops? They're not just for coughing. Your average crappy cough drop will take care of most sore throats. If it's a /really/ bad sore throat, there's brands like Cepacol that are sold more like over the counter cold medicine (they pretty much are) than a basic bag of cough drops.

There's also spray bottles you can buy that have a mild local anesthetic, numbs your whole throat. A lot of people swear by them, although personally I can't stand the sensation.

Marshmellow.

Find and eat a marshmellow.

The honey and milk suggestion attempts to coat your throat with something, making it hurt less. A marshmellow does this a *lot* better, mostly because it's filled with acacia gum (Gum Arabic).
I would recommend the honey because it has antibiotics. The marshmallow might actually work better as a coating than milk but some cough drops (make sure to get ones with Zinc or else it's kind of pointless) would probably be even better.

I'm surprised the OP expected vitamin water to help. Really, for all the good it does you may as well have been drinking soda. Keep away from the sugary drinks and stick with water & hot tea.

What's better is when you feel a sore throat coming on, to have some Colloidal Silver mixed with water. That will usually prevent it from getting bad.

Well, a while back when I got really sick, the boyfriend wanted me to drink a bunch of OJ, but I told him OJ tends to not agree with me, and it usually makes me more phlegmy (which is very counter productive). So he suggested Vitamin Water, and it tasted fine, helped soothe my throat, and agreed with me (aside from having to pee a lot). Plus, the sugar helps perk me up, otherwise I'd just be in bed all sleepy and blegh.

Sometime more recently he insisted on my drinking a bunch of OJ instead, and on top of the sickness I had, all my innards were burning, and I needed the bathroom much more.

I do try to drink more water, but thanks to our faucets it's very iron-y, and I can't really stomach tea (I know, I'm weird).

Well, I've tried a few different things, and they've worked well enough for me.

Like most people here have already said, honey in tea will do wonders to coat your throat and soothe some of the pain; as well as menthol based cough drops. As far as herbal teas go, I like Celestial Seasonings' Tension Tamer or Twinnings Chai.

Furthermore, if you've been coughing a lot, or your throat hurts especially bad, gargle hot (to your level of comfort, not scalding) salt water. It'll taste kinda funny, but if you can deal with it, it'll help heal up the damage in your throat.

Ok, so over the past 24 hours, I've had a bad sore throat, and it hasn't gone away. My treatment of ibuprofen and Vitamin Water hasn't exactly been helping. And shortly, I'll be attempting to sleep. Last night I didn't get much sleep at all due to the pain in my throat, and I rather not have a repeat of that. Plus, all the Vitamin Water is making me have to pee a lot.

What can I do to make it go away, outside of waiting it out?
Can I ask, what was your thought process behind ibuprofen and Vitamin Water? Don't mean to sound like a dick but I probably do.

Why not just get throat lozenges? Halls or Beechams are the best.

When I had my sore throat a month or two ago, I had about 4 lozengers a day and the maximum amount of that hot drink in the spoiler a day, in 2 days it was gone completely (by the end of the first day it didn't hurt but I could tell it wasn't fully healed).

Ibuprofen because it's a mild pain reliever (also the only medication we have in the apartment) and Vitamin Water because it helped soothe the pain before. And nah, you don't sound like a dick.

Lozenges, for a long while I haven't been able to find on that I can stand the taste of. So, peelz and drink because I don't really know what I'm doing and because I can't see a doctor/get advice from someone close enough to one.

I get the pain relief from the pills but the vitamin water is what puzzles me.

Well you seem to be ok taking pills and beechems do a pill for sore throats. Lozenges can be hit and miss but strepsils do nice ones, like honey and lemon. Halls soothers have nice flavors, blackcurrant, peach, cherry and strawberry.

Don't need a doc unless it's sore for like a week, stuff you can buy from the shops takes care of it in a flash.

EDIT: shit you're in America and here I am spouting off brands of stuff that America probably doesn't even have.

-.-

a) 'oh god, the pain, give me more pain!':Get 1 or 2 lemons, as sour as you can get them, heat the juice up, and drink it as hot as you can manage it.
b) 'give me more pain... but be gentle about it': same as a) but add honey to it until you feel you might be able to drink the concotion without dying (arguably it also works better, cause honey is a mild antibiotic).
c) 'fluffy bunny': chamomile tea with honey, as much as you can drink (and peeing a lot is actually quite healthy when you are sick).

I personally prefer method b) both for sore throats caused by a cold and caused by speaking too much.

Hunny, Garr Lic, Gin-ger, Lemmon, Cayenne, Hot T (herbs.)
Pretty sure Hunny and Lemmon are the key ingredients there but I like to keep my concoctions fancy.
