I broke down, took the plunge.

I already have Mario Kart 7 and Persona Q.
Gonna get Pokemon Yellow when it drops.

Any other, maybe, 'hidden gems' out there?
Any thing to watch out for?

- Fire Emblem Awakening & Fire Emblem Fates are both awesome tactical RPGs
- Bravely Default was a flawed but brilliant JRPG and the sequel is coming to the US in April
- Shin Megami Tensei IV is an awesome and brutal JRPG with a sequel coming out in the US sometime late 2016 probably (already out in Japan)

Let see (excluding what the people above me has mention already.)

Little Battle Experience (dammit, more people should played this game). Before you asked what it is, it kinda like Yugioh, Pokemon as in everyone revolve in a game which is toy mech models. The gameplay is rpg and third person combat.

Monster Hunter 4 if you want a challange but it's best played with other people.

Any Profession Layton if you want puzzles.

Animal Crossing New Leaf- if you want your life strip away invested in a fritional town.

Also you should give the streetpass games a go. They can be quite addicting if you encounter people with their 3ds on a daily basis.

What do you like? If you have a particular genre preference that would make reccomendations easier. Since you haven't really given any specifications I'll just rattle of a list of what I enjoy on my 3DS:

Pokemon X/Y/OR/AS - Version doesn't really matter
Shin Megami Tensei 4 - Hard, atmospheric JRPG with a monster collection mechanic
Bravely Default - Quirkly JRPG in the style of Final Fantasy 5
Devil Survivor / Devil Survivor 2 - Similae to SMT 4 but turn based tactics
Fire Emblem Awakening/Fates - Turn based tactics JRPG
Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate - Action RPG with huge replay value and a shit ton of content. It's also quite hard.
Xenoblade Chronicles (New 3DS Exclusive) - Huge sprawling JRPG with a strong story and great characters
The World Ends with You - Hard to describe why it's good, but it's good
Tales of the Abyss - One of the better JRPG's with a fairly involved battle system
Code Name: STEAM - Valkyria Chronicles style gameplay with a steampunk setting
Hyrule Warriors Legends - Not out yet, but it's Dynasty Warriors in a Zelda setting

I really like Street Fighter 4 on the 3ds. And Smash Bros.

I tried the demo for Monster Hunter 4, but haven't picked it up yet. I heard it was a really good game though.

I bought a couple of the SEGA Classics and really like them. Especially Out Run.

In addition to everything suggested, I'd also recommend Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies and specifically Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds.

A bit on the other hand, I recommend that you do NOT get Paper Mario: Sticker Star and Yoshi's New Island as they are pretty... lackluster, to put it nicely.

Final fantasy explorers is a nice quick fun game you can play in little bursts. It's like a PSO/MH lite. Etrian oddesey 4 is also pretty good.

I'll add my support for the first two as recommendations and take the third as a solid suggestion to look into myself given the company it's keeping.

I'd like to add to the list Zelda:A link between worlds.
Just for the pure nostalgia.

Also, if you can find it cheap, check out Ghost Recon:Shadow Wars.
It's a turn based strategy.
It had Gollop working on it.
Despite having a name that makes him sound like Gollum's cousin, this guy made some of the most beloved classic strategy games of the past.
The original Xcom for one.

Anyway.
There's my endorsements of other's choices, my blatantly unhidden recommendation and an obscure title.
I just wish they'd do another Advance Wars.

If you want truly hidden gems, try the eShop. There's some awesome stuff in there and much of it is cheap (even outside of the sales). For instance:

Mercenaries Saga 2 - A solid Final Fantasy Tactics/Tactics Ogre style strategy RPG
Attack of the Friday Monsters - A short and sweet adventure game about monsters, heroes and nostalgia
Crimson Shroud - This is, I kid you not, a digital single player table top RPG with dice, figurines and everything.

The later two are part of the Guild [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guild_(series)] collection, by the way. They're somewhat experimental games made by experienced Japanese game designers. If you want to mine gems unique to the 3DS, Guild is a good place to start.

I'll third the Etrian Odyssey franchise.

You can find Etrian Odyssey 4 can be found on the 3DS store.
As well as Etrian Odyssey Untold 1 and 2, which are remastered versions of EO1 and 2, respectively.

I can attest to these two.
FE:Awakening was my introduction to the modern JRPG, and its pretty good. Pokemon X is objectively better than Omega Ruby, if you haven't played pokemon in a while go with X.

Also Super Smash Bros. Get Super Smash Bros. It's a lot of fun if you even have a slight interest in fighting games, but even at that Smash really isn't anything like other popular fighting games.

Did you get the 3DS or the New(ugh) 3DS? If it's the former then there's some games you won't be able to play.

Two favourites of mine are Virtues Last Reward and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies. Oh and Ghost Trick if you want to snag DS games :)

Want a goofy Beat 'em Up? Code of Princess is pretty amusing. It's like Guardian Heroes but bite sized

Link Between Worlds is a fantastic game that you should get for sure.

The Fire Emblems are great too.

Pokemon X/Y is the best pokemon generation yet, it made big improvements in a ton of ways.
