Yeah this isn't the "secret origin revealed" because the origins behind the designs are actually well known and documented. C-3PO was inspired by the robot from the film Metroplis and Vader was a combination of various elements from a WWII Nazi helmet to a Japanese Samurai helmet with the whole breathing apparatus being a design borne from a scene in the script where Vader passes from one ship (the star destroyer) to another (the rebel blockade runner) and the artist (Ralph McQuarrie) thinking he'd need some breathing apparatus to survive in the vacuum (of course in the final film they attached via a sealed airlock).

Certainly there is the possibility that these masks were seen by McQuarrie and Joe Johnson when designing Star Wars and influenced the final look but it's never been mentioned anywhere else before by said designers.

Am I the only one who think that the mask on the right look a bit like the Cybermen from Dr Who (Not the modern one but the old retro one). It's the way how it shape around the eyes and mouth that make me think of the Cybermen.

The name "Vader" was definitely not taken from "Vajen-Bader". German for father is "vater," and "Vader" is adapted from that. Lucas was actually a bit worried that the name would give away the fact that Vader was Luke's father before Empire Strikes Back was released.

Gah! These masks feature heavily in a story I'm writing - and now the Internet knows about them!

The Internet!

I heard George Lucas had the idea of Darth Vader jumping onto another ship's hull in space. THAT SOUNDS SO BADASS I CRIED.
I guess that idea went to Grievous in the end (who's a mirror of Vader anyway, essentially).

OT: I guess so, but I mean, if you put a gas mask on and a Nazi helmet over it you'd get the same eyes (kinda) and the helmet shape, albeit shorter.

He could have gotten the idea from anywhere, although that name is a funny coincidence. But there are other explanations too. Wookieepedia: ""vader", is the Dutch word for "father" (as well as an Old English variant for "father" cf. OED),".

Well Pyro actually uses a gas mask, so theres no reference in that.

OT: It may be a total coinsidence..
