When i think of my favourite game, i think of the ones i played as a kid. When i was around 5yr olds i remember my first ever console. The Sega Megadrive. Obviously it came out before i was born but needless to say i loved it. Sonic was the first ever game i played, which apparently is a bad thing? You see if i like a game that is popular then thats a bad thing....? Take into account i was 5-6 just starting to get into gaming and when i grow up i am automatically tagged as not a true gamer.. This is ever so true, when i say my favourite game is final fantasy 7, i was a kid, who loved this game so much. I wasn't some 20ish yr old player who played all the previous versions on the NES and SNES. So i never experienced them. But now at the humble age of 18, i like many others are judged by members of the game community as being "Fanboyish" "Inexperienced Gamer" And that i should automatically know that 7 is so Overated.

Take into account however that i am now an 18 yr old games design student who has played many many games, on most platforms and can still say FF7 is my favourite game. But yet becasue of this i am apparently amateur.

What i am trying to say is this.
Gaming is becoming like music especially rock. If you like something popular you aren't a true gamer same with music, you like a mainstream band and not some unknown underground crappy band you aint a true rocker.

I don't no if any of you have felt this way, but its really annoying. Take for instance some kid, his favourite and first game is Halo, he believes its the bread and butter of gaming and then some middle aged gamer comes along and says thats crap hes a fanboy.

Therefore the term "Fanboy" which is the random conclusion to my rant is a word thats becoming increasingly popular around forums. Even though most of the people saying it, don't have sufficient information to deem the "Fanboy" a follower of a herd. Its the same for consoles, everyone deems games from other consoles inferior or the console itself inferior, just becasue its probably marketed heavily or they have never played it.

The essence of fanboy ain't really the follower of a herd, its more negative than that. Its more like one of many murderous fanatics of the herd, when the herd isn't that great anyway.

I reckon its just a case of who you're dealing with, mostly, a friend and I ruthlessly mocked and pretended to stone out guild leader recently for not knowing who Gordon Freeman was. It wasn't serious, and he never takes us seriously anyway, it was just a few laughs. Cause, you always have the l33t types who feel so obliged to exert some small authority over the world in general they'll use any excuse they can to put others down. Rule of thumb in this case is that being born earlier and playing earlier games is their life's achievement and you really don't need to worry about their opinion.

But I do see where you're getting at. Lately it seems that anti-fanboyism has become just as harsh, unforgiving and hypocritical and likely to jump to conclusions as fanboyism itself. Typical case of the vigilante becoming the crook I guess.

Wasn't the fanboy backlash kind of inevitable though? Destructoid was butchered for giving Twilight Princess a low score. Anyone that didn't rave about Halo 3 was shouted down for a while. For some reason, there are groups of people out there who feel compelled to scream at someone who doesn't like their favorite game.

I'm not saying you, FF7 fans, or even most gamers are like that. But a lot of people have been burned pretty obnoxiously and the general culprits seem to be on the teen side. It's not much of a surprise to see that people tend to tense up whenever someone young starts talking about their favorite game now.

You aren't a fanboy for liking FF7. Lots of people did. You'd be a fanboy if I said, "I liked FF3," and your reply was, "I didn't play that, but FF7 was better." (I've heard this sort of thing before)

The fact is, most often I hear the term "fanboy" being used by true fanatics (the origin of the word) to describe those who don't agree with them. The rest of us have our likes and dislikes and don't really care what other people think. Which brings me smoothly into my next point...

Why, precisely, do you care what other people think about how good of a gamer you are? I'll be honest, neither Halo nor FF7 were my personal cup of tea. Do you hate me for it? I don't care. Do you love me for it? I still don't care. Anyone who does ascribes too much importance to this hobby.

I agree with what you are saying, there is those who have take there love to an extreme limit, what i am generally talking about is people who deem everyone a "fanboy" for playing a specific game. Its a vicious circle, people like popular games, large amount = alot of idiots = annoying other gamers = Deem everyone who likes that game a fanboy, due to a small majority of idiots who have to get themselves heard.

The System is very simple.

You are a fanboy, because you like a game that was either Pop or Corporate (if we would like to continue along the music vein). This means, therefore, that you will be vehemently, obstinately opposed to anything that is not your golden calf (FF7).

Now, we have that Haut Gamerestghzvbbbbljk (none of which is pronounced--it's Fronsh, you see) faction, who believe that their golden calf could kick your golden calf's ass in mortal combat, then melt the gold down, plant their golden ass in it, then dissolve the golden assprint in aqua regis and sell it to the Ferengi with their hideous Jew ears. The Haut Gamerestghzvbbbbljk also realise that you must be rabidly obsessed with FF7, and subsequently explode in a huge frenzy of fear (OMGASH HE'S TOTALLY A FANBOY HE'S NOT GOING TO LIKE OUR FAVOURITE GAMES WTF) and then level their panicked accusations of fanboyism at you.

Now, take a situation in which I loudly proclaim that I am deeply, madly, passionately in love with, say, The Twisted Tales of Spike McFang. Three quarters of you vacant goons are going to sniff your fingers and cock your empty heads at me in stunned silence. It is highly unlikely that anyone is going to level the Fanboy charge at my twisted, deranged self. The scenario changes, however, when I say the same things about FF6.

Suddenly, out of nowhere, this is a huge climactic battle. The sort of thing you were rocking out to on the Big Bridge scene in FFV. Why? Perhaps it is the mentality of the Final Fantasist. Quizás it is--well, I'll stop there.

I'm not really interested in psychoanalysing the whole sorry mess that is the Gamer and how their individual favourite is a phallic symbol that comes under fire from a darkened mother figure when opp--yeah, alright. I'm stopping.

Well, as the forefather of centuries of darkness at the hands of an arbitrary institution once said, excellence is a habit.

Pity my temporal lobes got eaten away by herpes simplex.

Where is this place anyway?

A fanboy is basically a person with the maturity of a three year old. Whenever they hear something that is "wrong", by their point of view, they throw a massive tantrum. They've played a game/console that is, in their minds "perfect", and when anything comes along and counters that point of view they go ballistic.

My greatest instant of dealing with a fanboy had to be when talking to a friend about handhelds. He was a Sony man (having owned a PSX and PS2, but no other systems) and was excited about the upcoming release of the PSP. He would go on and on about its features; the widescreen, the UMD player, how pretty the games looked, etc. When presented with a few cons about the system (ie. short battery life, weak-looking game line-up, high cost, and the prospect of having to go up against the Handheld juggernaut that is Nintendo) he'd absolutely flip out. He told me that PSP would pwn the DS....

oh trust me, I've gotten my "I told you so" dance in many times by now :p

*Disclaimer* The previous post is my own personal experience, based on facts. I am not trying to insult the PSP. The PSP is a good system. God of War CoO is epic. I merely am trying to imply that the PSP has not "dominated" the handheld market like my friend predicted. *Disclaimer*

I choose to disregard your disclaimer, largely since it is filled to the brim with still-twitching tripe (although to call the bullshit you've just spouted "tripe" is flattery; at least tripe has some culture inside it).

Ultimately what this tells me is that you are smug. Good job, making a living out of sitting around, inhaling the delicious cornucopia that is your intestine's vaporous expungment. Your facts are ridiculous. No, they are absurd. What "facts"? Where? Were you still high on your floral culture's oracle juice when you typed that? Or is it that my incredibly advanced brain simply cannot analyze your lowly ape-reasoning?

Even more hilarious is that this disclaim is concessional of all things. You're basically saying "These are my thoughts. As an afterthought, please disregard them entirely." Your concession also stands at odds with the very porpoise of the rest of your post--a post about how your fanboy friend chucked a QQ at you. Ridiculous.

And that's all I really feel I have time for. Please do not attempt to counter this post, as it is simply too correct and sophisticated.

I love FF7, it's one of the best in the series.
But I also love the oldschool ones, especially FF2 ( 4 in Japan ).

And if I am called a Fanboy/girl/thing for loving Samus and the whole Metroid series, then I'll proudly call myself that too while I send my armies of Metroids to suck your energy away.
<5 years old, first game I ever played, Metroid on the 8-bit NES.

You played the first Metroid at 5 and walked away with your attention span and sanity intact?

Give me whatever medication facilitated this unnatural feat.

(Sorry about this little rant ahead. It may offend some.)

Fanboierisms are annoying. Someone either is defending a game or a console to the extent of the earth because of their personal beliefs. Then a mass of dumb asses with the same beliefs beat the living shit out of anyone who doesn't share those beliefs (This is pretty much a lesser version of Hitler as a democracy).

The way they do it? IF you use a head set, they will too, but they will blow on the microphone to make an annoying noise. This is usually because they are not very good with words and can't find a plausible reason why 'their' game is better than the rest.

If you type on Youtube of forums they will Spam 'Im bett3r th4n u, u suc b4llz" or will come out with the most ridicules argument ever conceived AND YET people will agree with it because they have the same BELIFES!

I don't often call people fanboys because what’s the point? All of the above is what you will get in return. If they were able to be more open minded and perhaps think, “What if we are wrong?” or even “Perhaps people don’t like the things we do.” But their skulls as thick as there dicks long won't allow them the simplest of though… Fuck em’.
And from this we learn that the lesser of two evils is the greater as well, culminating in a positive feedback loop that terminates with only absurd idiots.

Is it per'eps some bizarre custom on this forum that we must all announce that we are about to embark upon a rant, then spew forth shameful idiocy? IS this a case of me being trolled? Am I just new?

Yeah. We all feel the rants coming occasionally so warn the world ahead of time. And yes you are new, and we are all in fact mocking you secretly. You're just not in on it. Its not real, man! None of us are here!

Plus I think you're being a little thin-skinned. People will have different views to you. Some views will be wrong. But just because you can put forth an intelligent argument as to why they are wrong does not mean you are right, nor that you should instantly leap upon them with sharp knives and other such implements of pain as if they're the only source of nourishment you've come across for three decades that isn't a pot noodle. Don't expect perfection, you'll just be disappointed.
