The old Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds. Hands Down.
Yes!!! Yes!!! That is the correct choice, although I think it's better than Starcraft. Stock pile resources, build troops, unleash total hell on the enemies.
There was a Star Wars RTS? I never knew that. I seriously cannot believe they haven't made more... they'd sell like crazy I'm sure with today's graphics.

Youtubing it now... it's funny seeing Tie Fighters all of about about 20 metres off the ground shooting R2 units. I wonder if I could still find this somewhere... it looks pretty cool.
Amazon, or eBay man. It's an addictive game. It's the strategy game I'm playing when I'm not playing Civ III.

My personal favourite was Dawn of War: Dark Crusade. I especially loved the Campaign map system. And each of the factions does feel unique to play as.

All you do is collect resources and build stuff. SOOOOOOOOOOOOO boring, but soooooooooooooo addicting
Wrong! You can also go into third person mode and drive the crappy but cool vehicles around....which take more resources than a power plant, wtf?

I miss the good old rts day with many options.

but yer Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds will alwasy hold a place for me.

Company of Heroes is the one i played the most becuase its addictive due it been easy to mod, even more since new models are getting added in.

but one of my all time bests is Empires: Dawn of the Modern World just becuase of the amount of units you could have at one time. I could never win online tho, damn v2 rockets.

If you have a computer imbued by wizards. than Supreme Commander and Forged Alliance. are by far the best base building RTS game. Although there is little competitive merit due to sheer scale of the game. There is so mush for a single player to controll it is very easy to neglect a catastrophic attack taking place 40km form the camera. Its that scale that makes it so great. I have had a T1 bomber strike that ran out of fuel halfway to the enemy base on the 80km ocean map.

and some of the things that happen in that game are fantastic, I had a colossal spider-bot crawl on the bottom of the ocean to the enemies unprotected beachheads. guarded only by a single engineer which was about the size of the spider-bots toe. the spider bot did not bother to shoot the engineer I had a good laugh at that, but than its last leg when out of the way to stomp on the engineer. I damn near shit my self laughing.

I personally like RTS games without base building. World in Conflict is one of my favorite games ever. Mechcommander 2 was excellent and I guess you can argue Mechwarrior 3 and 4 were RTSs. I don't consider the Homeworld games to be base builders, because the mothership can be used offensively and is it self a unit. and if you get far enough in EVE it can be considered an RTS if your the Fleet Commander.

So very few mentions of Warcraft III here. I'd say Warcraft III is a much better RTS than Starcraft II. SCBW still takes the throne though.

I would say either Dawn Of War 2 or Company Of Heroes. They are both different from Starcraft RTS and I used to find them fun (haven't played in ages.)

I've been playing a ton of AI War lately (got it during the steam sale), and while it is really different from just about any other RTS game I've played (due in part to it being EXTREMELY asymmetric), I've been really enjoying it. It might be a little more strategic than tactical however, though there is plenty of both.

C&C Series (Except C&C4), probably the best base building RTS I've every played, especially RA2, RA3 and C&C3

The original Dawn of War was also awesome, especially the Dark Crusade and Soulstorm standalone expansions, even though the game is pretty unbalanced

The Earth Series (2140, 2150 and 2160) are excellent games that not a huge number of people I know have heard of that I would strongly recommend

Age of Mythology is probably my favourite out of the Age of games, but try the others. Star Wars galactic battlegrounds is basically AoE2 in the Star Wars universe so if you like the Age ofs I would recommend it

Rise of nations is also quite good, although it gets a little dull and repetitive after a while

Universe at War : Earth Assault is also good

Personally I found that Sins of a Solar Empire, Supreme Commander (1&2) and Starcraft (1&2) got very boring VERY quickly (especially sins, which was fun for less than a day)

Hope this helps :)

Warcraft 3. Starcraft on steroids for better or for worse. Also if you really care about the base building aspect then there is no better game than Stronghold: Crusader.

Command & Conquer, all the way up to 3. Don't play 4 or Red Alert 3.

There's also the Stronghold series.
