Yeah he somehow managed to break ALL his weapons, and then I gave him a shotgun.... I got rid of him ASAP after that incident.
I just remembered a humorous tale from Fallout 2, that may change my opinion from Ian to god damn Vic. Sulik, Vic and myself came across some raiders attacking a slave caravan. We decided to intervene, and ended up hitting a slave in the process, so all of them went hostile, and we had to wipe 'em both out. All good though, since I really needed money bad. Well, after a long and hard fight, we finally got the enemy down to a single, unarmed slave. An unarmed slave, what could go wrong? How about Vic critically missing his shot and dropping his weapon. This harmless slave then picked up said weapon and one-shotted me.

It's safe to say I shed no tears when Vic bit the dust. Sulik and I strolled into the horizon sunset with relief in our hearts.

Actually if you melee attack his outstretched hand he treats it as a high 5. I think you get an achievement for it.

OT: Boone (Fallout:NV) is the best companion ever. You never have to pick up a gun again. He makes you feel like a post-apocalyptic aristocrat. You make all the decisions and do all the talking, her takes care of the dirty work.

Best: Agro from Shadow of the Colossus

Agro is just horse, sure, but while your girlfriend is being.... dead and your not having conversation with an unknown Deity, Agro is literally always there, she helps get to and occasionally helps fight the Colossus in some situations, is known to be literally INVINCIBLE, and really who doesn't like black stallions?

Worst: Skyrim Companions

As a fan of PC RPGs I must say...

Best is Virgil from Arcanum. He is an important catalyst to the main story, and a very neat party member. He is ridiculously subservient to the point you just feel bad for him because he just seems to put his life on the line for no reason other than his own beliefs and self ascribed position as 'your protector'. The thing is, there is no other party member I know of that is as dynamic as Virgil is. The course of the main story (Evil Story Arc, or Good Story Arc) completely changes his personality, making him a badass or quite literally someone who is reborn and enlightened.

Worst by far in my book is Carth from Ogre Battle 64. Just getting him in your army is hard enough, but even doing so is practically pointless as he just a recolored Dark Knight. I would have said Paul, but Carth is even more annoying because you can only get him like 3 missions away from the ending game mission which entirely defeats the purpose of having him as by that point you would have much more powerful units anyway. Getting him though is incredibly annoying because 1. You can't have any of the Zenbonian Characters 2. You have to have medium Chaos Frame (not too sure though) which by that point you don't want because high chaos frame gets you a much better ending.

Best is probably Veronica from FO:NV. She was tank, and was also interesting to talk to. Her or Boone, as they were just as powerful but specialised in different combat styles.
Worst must be those dudes in Battlefield. Stealing my kills all the time...

Best:

I love you, Wrex.
Worst...

Just... PLEASE... shut UP!
There's probably some that's slipped my mind right now that I like/dislike more, but these are at least among the best/worst in any case.

As for worst... Ehh, I got nothing. Maybe Claptrap from Borderlands 2? But I was one of those crazy people who actually liked him. The one time where he just wants a high five and your only choice is to just to ignore him and walk off... Oh come on game! Give him a break! </3
You...you realize you can high five him right? You just need to melee his hand.
Really? Dammit!

Also, Claptrap's birthday quest was so depressing! D:

OT: As much as the game wasn't all that great, the Dog from Fable 2.

He finds treasure, and takes a bullet for you! Dog bros for life.

Rose of Sharon Cassidy!
ED-E!

Rex!
Joshua Graham!
Craig Boone!
Veronica Santangelo!
Dog/God!
Christine Royce!

And last... but most definitely and certainly not the least:

CLEMENTINE (you keep that hair short)

I gave Boone an Anti-Material Rifle and a shitload of exploding ammo so I could focus on buying stylish clothes instead of armour... weapons... healing items... or pretty much anything.

For close in work (going anywhere with not much room, say most vaults) I had Veronica in power armour and armed with a unique ballistic fist.

Laziest adventurer ever.

Zaeed Masani from Mass Effect forever. Dude didn't really have much character beyond hate everyone BUT GODDAMN WAS HE ATTRACTIVE. Also Aria T'loak from the Omega DLC. DAMN. Really lets just say every Bioware companion (minus freaking Merrill from DA2. Annoying is the nicest word to describe her).

Outside of Bioware, Jane Valderama from Saints Row 2. Many wonderful hours were spent with her on the back of my bike shooting random people with a shotgun.

Lastly, the entire cast of FFVI. Even the ninja dude who never said anything ever. They had a surprising range of character and all of them were worth my time.

Best:

ARGO not "Agro" from Shadow of the Colossus (learn how to spell, damn it!)

Clementine from Walking Dead.

All of the companions from Fallout New Vegas and all DLCs except Honest Hearts.

Elizabeth from Bioshock: Infinite... damn she's charming.

Worst:

Any Dog that Bioware does.

Jacob Taylor from ME2... he just has... no personality whatsoever.

The Little Sisters from Bioshock 2. Useless, and annoying to have around.

James Vega from ME3... case study for why Bioware SHOULD NOT have used auto-dialog that heavily in what was obstensibly A ROLE-PLAYING GAME.

Best Companion: Ashley from Resident Evil 4.

She keeps up with your running speed, huddles behind you and stays there no matter what when you draw a weapon, ducks if she happens to be infront of you, and she fucks off when the game decides you need some alone time. She adds to the tension of the action and never gets in the way of it.

From a gameplay standpoint there's absolutely no reason not to like her, unless you don't like A.I companions by definition, or you simply suck at the game.

In terms of the companion I had the most emotional connection with, I'm gonna go with Agro too. Totally loyal, sticking with you through thick and thin, and the only companion you have in this lifeless wasteland. And "that" moment right before the final Colossi only strengthens this. And all of this achieved through gameplay alone.

Worst Companion?

As much as I liked Farah from Prince of Persia: Sands of Time as a character, she sucked a giant penis when it came to the gameplay. She's no help at all and has the dexterity of wet tissue paper.
Agree on Ashley, disagree on Farah. She was practically useless in combat and was constantly crying out for help but as far as I can remember she never died on me, and while her attacks were incapable of killing sand monsters she could stun them short of a final blow from the Prince's dagger. I'd also point out her in-game "co-op" input in helping out with the puzzles but that was all scripted.

OP: I'll go with Ashley, Agro and Yorda. And Pey'j/Double H from Beyond Good & Evil :)

Well, you remember that elevator section? The one that takes you up to the hourglass, where your confined to a very small area with Farah and sandmonster after sandmonster keeps spawning in? I still have fucking nightmares about that section. As a matter of fact I have a special save on my PS2 that I guard with my life that allows me to skip it.

Best companion: Legion from Mass Effect 3
Worst companion: Depends on whether I'm judging the charcter or the AI.
AI wise it has gotta be Shiva from RE5
Charcter wise, neighbour dude from inversion game, the plot twist makes him the number B-hole of all time

The best companion in my experience? Elizabeth, hands down.

The worst?
Well, I'm going to get some flak for this, but...

Yorda, from Ico. Fuck Yorda. Complete waste of programming.

It's Agro. Wander clearly says "Agro!" when you call her. There's also a trophy from the HD version called "Agro Circus" which is achieved by doing all the stunts on her.

After coming into this thread thinking i read "best/ worst company" I'll give you my answer.

Best:
Elisabeth from BS:I. Doesnt get in the way, cant get killed AND gives you ammo / salt /health on a nice basis while not overdoing it. I liked her.

Worst:
All the skyrim companions (EXCEPT that horse from the dark brotherhood) But that is more because after an hour or three of playing, they are all as usefull as a packing mule.

Vega from ME3, he was a moron to put it plainly. Didnt like him one bit.

There are probably loads more on both sides of the spectrum, but thats all that pops up in my mind now.
