Worst? Bioware romances.

What? *Click these specific dialogs and you win romance* Give me a break. That's not romance. That's an achievement and a possible replayability factor.
How else would you expect a romance to work in a game based around dialogue choice?

And people saying DAO you realise that takes place from Ostagar to the archdemon in 2 weeks.
Totally ruining any depth when just talking to someone for a week results in them spilling everything, and jumping into bed with you.
Sorry to be nit picky, but it's longer than that. To quote Dagna- "You're back? But it takes a minimum of two weeks and four days to make the journey to the Circle Tower and back."

The wiki states it takes place over two years, however developers vary between one and two.

In all fairness, though I'd put DA:O up there as one of the best... You can spam with presents and the right conversation options and romance characters the first time at camp, which means you did it a few days tops after meeting them. Unless you only have one meaningful conversation a camp, which I tended to.

Oh, OP- Best: Aforementioned DA:O, FFX (Yuna and Tidus, yes, but also Wakka and Lulu), and, if you count it, Fang and Vanille from FFXIII. I also liked Zack and Aerith in FF:CC. When he opened her letter, I did sniffle.

Worst: FFX-2 (Leblanc and Nooj. Fucking creepy as well as annoying.) Snow and Serah from FFXIII (I feel for him and all, his fiancée's a crystal, but he starts talking to a rock. Oh, and maybe my glasses need a clean, because he almost seems to half flirt with her sister at points. Lightning, however, likes to punch him in the face.)

FFVII... My friends and I made a list once of the number of times Cloud says something that sounds romantic about someone. Neither Tifa nor Aerith made the top of the list. Advent Children did not help, if only because of "On your knees, I want you to beg for forgiveness." God damn George Newbern and his suggestive tones.

Kingdom Hearts did not handle romance well... In my opinion, probably the most romantic line ("He made me feel... like I had a heart.") was given to someone who isn't supposed to be romantically involved with the character it concerns. I hear people complaining about Sora/Kairi/Riku, but Roxas/Namine/Axel? Even more confusing in my opinion.

I played Dragon Age before Mass Effect and I gotta say comparing the two, the romance in Mass Effect is pretty lame. It's basically just three conversations, and as long as you talk to someone a few times, you can't fail, making the romance seem sort of mechanical. I felt like I was just going through the motions in that game, like a psychopath, saying the words but not hearing the music y'know. Also, the romance is kept completely separate from the rest of the game and doesn't really affect the plot in any way.

Dragon Age had utterly brilliant romance though. It was a bit reliant on bringing gifts, but you still had to talk to the character and actually get to know them. It felt like an actual relationship was being established and evolved, and it was beautiful. Also, the romance affected the plot, was referenced by other characters and changed the way your lover acted around you.

Best is easily the Darkness, Enslaved Odyssey To The West and Rick Taylor/Jennifer Wells from Splatterhouse. Also Markus/Anya from Gears of War.

Worst is every JRPG ('cept FF7)

I should know cause I write fanfiction of romance between characters lol.

I felt the Dragon Age romances were still artificial in comparison to something like Baldurs Gate II, but by and large I agree with you. Youre definitely right about the inter party recognition, that was fantastic. It really made the whole party feel like a team.

You know, for a game that was "about the characters" according to some, how Bioware could be so lazy with the characters in ME2 I do not know. They had a great example to follow in DAO, yet instead they go with the idea that this "suicide squad" should barely even acknowledge eachother.

Mass Effect 2 was just bad for characters full stop.

agreed, I got really attached to Jackie as a character, and the relationship between him and his girlfriend founded a lot of that attachment.
agreed. Wish it was that good in the comics. I mean, it's not bad, but it could have been better.

Though if you are familiar with the comics, Jackie/Sara is pretty amazing too.

Best: Bastila in KOTOR
I liked that one, but it's kinda overlooked because it's completely optional and probably wouldn't pan out in the light side ending. My personal favorite is the ME1/ME2 Liara relationship.

On the other side of the spectrum, The Force Unleashed romance was one of the worst pieces of crap I've ever seen. Refer to Yahtzee's TFU 2 review.

You are condemning a lot of games. Could you be more specific? (If this is trolling, I apologize for feeding him).

I see no better than Shadow of the Collosus. Serisly, the dude killed 15...16...13...errr a bunch of monsters and gave up his soul to revive his girl. He couldn't even spend any time with her. Best non-dialouge romance evar. I would also mention ICO but it's kinda like a schoolyard romance and it's the same as SotC basically.

What a games what a games..that I haven't played.

Worst so far? Fable.. really yeah! Though I kinda agree that Final Fantasy "romances" are pretty terrible to. Ah FF VIII... emogit and prettygirl. Yeah I feel the romance. Hey yeah that is it Final Fantasy VIII!

Best, well oddly it is The Darkness, when you go back home after your first big fights and it is your 21th birtday. So there is a cake and the television goes on..you two sit on the couch.. she falls asleep next to you. And like a real man you sit there for an hour! THAT is a real man! Not to mention the movie that was one was pretty good :) I watched all of it!

That is romantic, such a simple small thing as staying with your sleeping GF. For a real hour!

Best? I have a soft spot for Zidane and Garnet, and not just because I'm replaying FFIX right now and getting totally nostalgic. I just like the development of their relationship. And it manages to be really funny too. There are definitely other games that have pulled this progression off, and probably done it better too, but my memory sucks right now, and this is the only one I can think of. It's also the one of the only Final Fantasy romances that didn't annoy me, or that I didn't consciously choose to ignore (I don't care what anyone says; nobody had a romance in FFVII...Except Cid and Shera...)

Worst? Aside from several of those already mentioned...I love the game, but did anyone else find the Ethan/Madison hooking up scene in Heavy Rain utterly laughable and cliched? I mean, I individually like both of the characters, and I like the concept of them together, but the execution was pretty lol-worthy. I don't know, I guess it's unfair to call it the worst, but, again, it's just the only one coming to mind that hasn't been brought up.
Id have to agree with the ff9 as one of the best, Zidane was one of the few ff chars I ended up really liking, well one of the few leads, most of them after 3 were whiny kids

The worst is certainly between Raz Karcy and Beepo in Overblood for PS1, frankly it was so embarrasing I had to set fire to my neighbours house to get it out of my mind

Human noble, fergus was at ostagar, went missing at the battle, then at the end after the arch demon was beat he says he was found by some chasind and healed, for 2 weeks, he woke up you were already marching to denerim.
Fergus says he never made it to Ostagar, and I know my memory isn't the best source, but I don't remember him saying two weeks.
Wynne states that a Mage Origin PC has been away from the tower for almost a year.
The coronation/funeral at the end of the game takes place six months after the final battle, though romancing anyone is kind of an invalid option at that point.
Also, to reiterate my previous point both the wiki and the developers say it's at least a year, as does Wynne. Taking Dagna's journey times, and all the walking you have to do... That seems reasonable.

Surprisingly, the most convincing romances tend to be the ones where the infamous 'I love you' does appear - for me at least. It's all about implicitly. I find 'love' to be a very strange concept almost inseparable from a crush or mere sexual attraction and I don't really understand the driving force behind it. Thus, as you can imagine from my point of view, if the narrative has to rely on the explicit dialogue: "You are special and I love you which is different from merely being attracted to you due to *insert vauge implausible reason here*," I immediately find it unbelievable. If it remains vauge however, whether the romance is just an attraction or actually love, it kind of mirrors the real world where the line is indeed blurry between the two things thus making the romance more believeable to me.

The romances in DA:O were very different depending on which character you romanced and how the player handled the romance. My Dalish Warden (and myself for that matter) couldn't help but be intrigued by the beautiful, intelligent, sharp-witted, and wicked Morrigan. It seemed like a simple mutual attraction for... blowing off some steam, if you know what I mean *wink*wink*notch*notch*. However, as Morrigan started to hesitate the Warden's company and her inevertable departure after the end-battle became apparent, the lines between attraction and love became blurred. Though it was hinted, the excact phrase "I love you" was never actually spoken in my playthrough, and the romance came off as honest and real, resulting in a very emotional scene at the fiery gates of Denerim. *sob*
