What is your favorite bad ending for a game and why? This can also include extended game overs. Chrono Trigger's "but in the end, the future refused to change" depressed the hell out of me when I was younger, and few bad endings have stuck with me as much.

Usually bad guy endings in games end on a negative vibe to highllight what an awful person you are, but, in KOTOR, you became the ultimate badass leader of the unstoppable evil sith empire.

I liked that ending.

Red Dead Redemption: All that hard work John went through to give his son a life free of violence? Gone in a poof of smoke as Jack goes off to take revenge on the man who killed his father and he falls into the same bad life his father tried to spare him from.

Do the Half Life 2 endings count as "bad"? In the HL2, you're an instant away from dying when you get ripped out of space time by the G-man, in ep1 the Citadel explodes and destroys the whole town and derails the train you're on while everything fades to black, in ep2 Eli Vance is killed and it fades to black with Alyx crying.

If you wait too long in Majora's Mask the world actually gets destroyed.

Another one would be Final Fantasy X-II where the world gets destroyed, too.

Vampire Bloodlines. Every ending where you get to skip one of the boss dungeons/fights.

One's better than the other but in both you are so very screwed.

I consider being blown up better than being sent to the bottom of the ocean forever and ever, btw. Still the ocean one was my favourite "you messed up" ending

In NWN2 MoTB- if you do the evil ending, you essentially become a god, consume countless people. Eventually, the Gods themselves rise up against you, and you even manage to kill some of them as well before disappearing from the Realms. I mean, that's a pretty damn good evil ending.

Gears of War 3.

Hey, guess what? You've been playing as the assholes for the whole game series... don't you feel so good causing Locust-genocide to hide your father's massive life failures, Marcus?

Another favorite of mine I forgot to mention was the bad ending of Castlevania Sorrow series. (i don't know the spoiler tags so forgive me) If you let Soma become Dracula, the game ends with Julius sadly intending to keep his promise of slaying Soma/Dracula if Soma failed. And then you unlock Julius mode! Where you play through the game as Julius, Yoko, and Alucard (all friends of Soma) to go through the castle all over again. And this time, the final boss is replaced with Soma!

Both endings to Bastion are equally depressing.
If you restore the world, for all you know, the Calamity will happen again. Zia goes back to live in prejudice and fear. Zulf might get his fiance back, but the whole apocalypse is still gonna happen.

If you choose to leave the world as it is, there is no guarantee of survival, plus you have to live with the consequences. Zia might finally be free, but Zulf's fiance will still be dead and the world broken.

For the record, I chose the second option. Learning from your mistakes and moving on is preferable to repeating them.

If you start the suicide mission half-cocked, everyone on your team (including yourself) dies. The only ones left are Joker and EDI.

The Illusive Man tells Joker that it'll be alright, that "Humanity is nothing but resilient." Immediately after Joker leaves the room, TIM has this look of "oh god, what are we going to do? Well, let's salvage this..." As an army of intergalactic mecha-cthulhus rush into the galaxy.

It was one of the few video game endings that actually made me sad.

My favorite is Metro 2033.

Despite it being a great game with excellent narrative, the endings were just great.

Throughout the game I felt like the "Bad" ending where you fire the nukes would be all about what an asshole you are for nuking the Dark Ones.
When I think about it, the game gives equal hints and reasons for both the "If it's hostile, you kill" and the "Maybe it's all a misunderstanding" viewpoints.

I went with the ending that I felt was right, the "Bad" ending, and much to my surprise, the game didn't make me feel like a dick for picking the option I wanted.
Something rare and refreshing for multiple choice games.
