After just seeing Steve Harris do his thing live, and being unable to comprehend the awesomeness, I vote Steve.

Wow these guys are great! Do they have any albums out?

OT: I like the bassist from Muse.
I'm honestly not sure. I believe so. I saw them opening for the Dropkick Murphys when they played at Stubbs in Austin and their bassist took his giant acoustic bass, and leaped on amps and stage dived with it- earning him the title of "bad ass of the night".

edit-

Also he did full body contortions the whole time.

My vote goes for Eric Avery, hes a bit overlooked, but good. Hes one of the rare occasions where the song moves around the bassline, such as in Jane's Addiction and Deconstruction. You won't find him doing bass solos, but is awesome regardless.

Second goes to Flea.

How can you not love that slap-bass?

What's a bassist? Is that the guy who tries to interrupt the guitar players? (sarcasm)

It's difficult to say. For sheer mind blowing speed and technicality, Alex Webster from Cannibal Corpse
God damn those people scare me. In great ways.
However, John myung from Dream Theater can do amazing things with a bass. Half of their songs, I'm not sure if it's guitar or bass playing.
Also this because I just love this piece.

Well, there's always the bassist:

But Tal Wilkenfeld would definitely be ranked highly. Take it away, Jeff Beck!
