I'll just end this thread right here and say Geddy Lee from Rush. Les Claypool of Primus is an obvious and well deserved second place though.

CliffyB!

And no, not that CliffyB. I mean Cliff Burton.

I'm definitely a fan after his insane intro in For Whom the Bell Tolls

Depends on the style of music: I like Steve Harris, Cliff Burton, Jaco Pastorius and Victor Wooten, among others.

No, he isn't the best ever but I'm definitely a fan after his insane intro in For Whom the Bell Tolls
You should then hear: Metallica - (Anethesia)Pulling Teeth
3-4 min bass solo by Cliff Burton :)

Seriously..how has Jaco Pastorius not been mentioned. He was one of the most influential bass guitarists ever?
I would also mention Charles Mingus.

People who do not know this band and this bassist need to know this band and this bassist.
Victor Wooten is also amazing, same with Les Claypool.

When you talk about something like this I think its unfair to compare rock bassists like Flea or Geddy to the virtuosos like Victor Wooten, Marcus Miller and Jaco Pastorious.

So if we are talking Rock bassists. Flea, John Myung and Geddy Lee stand out.

If we are talking about overall talent then you can't look past Victor and Jaco

While I wouldn't nominate either as the 'best bassist of all time,' I've had a soft spot for Matt Freeman (Rancid/Operation Ivy) and Tim Commerford (Rage Against the Machine) since I first started playing. There's an album by Gov't Mule, The Deep End Vol. 1, recorded after their original bassist passed away which features a different bassist on every track, I know Flea and Bootsy Collins both appear. It's worth a listen if you're into good bass playing.

And the thread needs video:

Ryan Martinie of Mudvayne for the win. Seriously, go on Youtube watch him play Dig or Happy or another song and you should be convinced.

Actually, here. Dig and Dull Boy both have just Ryan's angle:

I would like to say if anyone mentions Nikki Sixx or Gene Simmons then I will never look at you the same way again.
