Unless I missed it, nobody's mentioned Tony Levin. FOR SHAME.
I do love him, very talented guy. Sean Malone is also worth mentioning.
I just listed the only bassist I really consider "the best of all-time."

JESUS FLIPPING H' CHRIST, three words John Paul Jones. From Led Zeppelin if you are too stupid to know, listen to the Lemon Song, Whole Lotta Love, any live show, particularly his improvisational skills with the best drummer of all John Bonham. I'm afraid you're all wrong and I, as usual, am completely correct. Merci.

I would like to say if anyone mentions Nikki Sixx or Gene Simmons then I will never look at you the same way again.
Yeah, Gene Simmons is terrible. Missed half of his notes whenplaying live.

Overall my favourite are Geddy Lee, Les Claypool and Cliff Burton. Id assume alot of people have said those really.

John McCrea from CAKE
Flea
James Jamerson (played bass for a lot of Motown stuff)
Rocco Prestia from Tower of Power
And of course Les Claypool.

Considering my avatar, this isn't surprising. Shavo Odadjian from System of a down. Mad at bass and has a wicked beard.

Just look at it!

Well, to be honest, in the music business, music is a pretty minor thing.
KISS are my favorite band, and i do love their music, but i also understand that to get anywhere in music you have to have the right look and the right business plan, and i think that Gene Simmons has both of those.
It's not just musical ability that constitutes for being in a good band, and as for the live comment, He obviously does something right if KISS played to 1.5 million people this past tour...

Best bassist, a contradiction don't you think?

Just add 2 more strings and there's actual skill involved.

Alright..

Gene can write a good business plan, we all know that.. but he can't play bass. The question was "who you all think is the best Bassist of all time?" not "Which band member has the best sense of business?"

Gene Simmons, along with Pete Wentz and Nikki Sixx are not welcome in this thread.

Only horrible guitarists and idiots make fun of Bass.

David Ellefson, Cliff Burton, Geezer Butler and John Paul Jones

At least someone recognises Ellefson.

Steve Digiorgio (Fretless bass in metal ftw) (Death, Sadus)
Alex Webster (Cannibal Corpse)
John Myung (Dream Theater)
David Ellefson (Megadeth)
Burton of fucking course
Flea (RHCP)
Geddy Lee (Rush)
Steve Harris (Iron Maiden)
Les Claypool (Primus)
Stefan Fimmers (Necrophagist)

In no particular order.
