Pete Trewavas of Marillion might not be quite as funky as the fellas mentioned above, but he is a technical wonder, and one of the very few bass players who has a profound impact on the music of his band.

Jim Cherry - any self-respecting punk rock fan should agree with me on that one.

If you haven't heard of him then shame on you!

Damn, while I know almost everything about bassguitar´s evil twin, guitar, I know horribly little about bassists. But I think John Entwistle of The Who will do. Yay, that rhymes!

John Myung of Dream Theater.
Yeah, that basically sums it up. It's all opinion though. He is the BEST bassist, answering the question.

The bassist i PREFER is Tony Choy of Atheist. He could be second best.

Hmm. Victor Wooten rocks the fretless, John Myung could probably knit sweaters for my family in one riff, and Geddy Lee is good at multitasking. John Entwistle is probably my favourite classic bassist. Cliff Burton deserves mention too.

Les Claypool, maybe.

Brian Robinson from A Wilhelm Scream's pretty sick as well. Look for the riff at 0:22;

I'll just end this thread right here and say Geddy Lee from Rush. Les Claypool of Primus is an obvious and well deserved second place though.
If I'm not mistaken Geddy Lee also plays keyboard and is the vocalist too. One epic bass player.

If I said John Entwistle it would be because my Who crazed freind likes to bash this fact into my cranium. He was great, based on a video I saw, but Les Claypool is my forever choice.
