It really depends on what you are looking for in a Batman movie.
The Burton film (BATMAN) stays very much true to the comics in every shape and form. The outfit, the style, everything. It's a comic projected on the screen in motion.
The Dark Knight is more of a realistic approach. What would the comic world look like if it were real, here and now. It's a realistic vision of the comic projected on the screen.
So yeah. If you're like me and simply want a translation of the comics on the silverscreen, then BATMAN is the superiour film for you. If you want a 'what if' version, go with The Dark Knight. Both are great films.
I personally prefer BATMAN for a few reasons:
- it's a bit slower, TDK sometimes goes way too fast with barely any breathing time
- it's got a bigger sense of style, you really feel the gothic presence which is completely lost in the realistic TDK. Same with the costume design and batmobile design.
- Michael Keaton is a superiour Batman by all means (but not Bruce. Christian Bale plays a way better Bruce). He is less vocal, does the voice perfectly (he practically invented the grainy voice which was then later fully utilized by Kevin Conroy) and is overal much more intimidating (the bat-smile).
So yeah. There you have it.
EDIT: I used Batman and TDK because they are the most compared movies of the bunch. Personally I love the animated films to death.
Phantasm was great and really captured Bruce's persona. Return of the Joker was a great portrayal of Terry and Bruce, further building their relationship and Red Hood showed us that other voice actors can work great. Really looking forward to YEAR ONE!
