Ticket to Ride.
LOOK IT UP.
EDIT: I once played risk with my extended family while on vacation for 3-4 hours straight, went to bed, then church (Don't judge,I'm not a fanatic), then came back and finally finished it with another hour or 2.
EDIT2:

I've actually had a friend tell me about Risk 2210 AD. Is it like the original Risk?
It's like the original Risk on steroids. It ends in 5 turns, but there's a lot more strategy involved. There are underwater cities you can fight in and you can go to the moon. Also, there are cards you can buy with in-game money that give your troops bonuses and can be really useful at the end of the game when everyone knows the game's about to end and they're launching all their mechs at each other. It's great fun.

as long as you have a system, Risk is the best.
You get to take over the world, and as long as the rules are bent to allow land swapping and other useful things, then a group of friends can have a very good time at it for quite a while.

I cannot believe that nobody has mentioned Sorry! yet! Ooh that game brings the vengeance out in people like never before. Delightfully simple, yet strategic. You make and break truces with every turn and it's such great fun! Not a game to play with friends who tend to take everything the wrong way and far too seriously.

And, like others have recommended, good old tabletop rpgs are a lot of fun! My guy and I actually started playing just the two of us because we don't have a group. We take turns GMing. It does take time to set up for whoever wants to GM.

Go. It's been around for over 2 millennia, so it must be pretty good.

This. Fucking this. I don't think there is a "popular" game I hate more than risk.

My favorite would have to be Catan. There is a bit much of the gameplay dedicated to luck, but you still can work your way around that. I personally tend to avoid board games because video games gets the job done better and faster, but a lot of the board games I've been seeing spring up lately have been pretty close to turn-based strategy games and RPGs. I wonder if Advanced Wars could make a good board game?

It kinda is, in Warhammer, isn't it? I dunno, never played the game, but different guys have different ranges and abilities, right?

Risk IS based on dice rolls, but that should be added in to the strategies you play with...

Robo Rally is my favourite. Not a lot of people have heard of it, but you should check it out, it's really a great game.

No it isn't.

Snakes and Ladders ends quickly. Monopoly is interminable. And by about a third of the way through you can tell who is going to win.
Also, by the end of a Monopoly game someone is going to hate someone else. Fights may break out. Monopoly is intense.
To Quote Dane Cook "FUCK THIS GAME!(smash the gameboard over) It's 4 in the morning Grama. YOU WIN!"

I played Catan once it was very fun, kinda wanna play right now, but I don't own it. Atmosphere is pretty cool too (new wave board games / DvD set up types).

Settlers of Catan
Risk
Absolutely these two.
I might add scrabble, since it's also pretty darn fun, but really, these two are the only two board games you need. Especially when you get into the expansions for Settlers (Of which I own them all, except Traders and Barbarians). Both these games are different every time, they last a while, and they are flat out just plain fun.
I love 'em both!

I remember that being a pain to set up as a kid, I just wanted to play! And by play, I mean set off the trap, of course.

Horrorclix is brilliant; the one time I played it my team of zombies dragged down Rasputin who was buoyed up by the malevolent spirits of the dead. He attacks by pulling the knives out of his body and hurling them at the enemy. Didn't stop my zombies.

At the other end of the board a ghostbuster who was trying to rescue a survivor got shot twice because the survivor though "He was one of them." Good times.

Also Warhammer 40K and Magic: The Gathering, although these aren't really board games per say.

Ughh so much Monopoly. I have never been able to like that game. After 20 mins its clear who will win and you just sit around going through the motions of waiting for everyone else to lose.

My favourite is Citadels. Look it up if you've never heard of it.
