Catcher In The Rye and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Both had such awesome heroes, how can you beat a line like "Dat truck 'dere is trash and trash is what people be puttin on the head of dey friens when dey don't deserve it" I paraphrase, but seriously both of those books really really shine. And the end of Catcher when Holden is with his younger sister, probably THE most cathartic moment ever put onto paper. I cry every time I read it.

My favourite would have to be The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. Followed by Macbeth (hey it IS bounded as a book when assigned to us >_>)
You got to read Paulo Coelho in school? Cool. The Alchemist and some other books by him are awesome...
Grade 9 I took an ISP course (which stands for International Studies Preparation, which was a prelude program to the International Baccalaureate program) and two of the forced readings were The Alchemist and The Life of Pi. I really didn't like the latter but The Alchemist was an amazing book and after reading and analyzing it I was actually affected on a level that changed my general mood for the better.

I still need to buy a copy when I get the chance...

EDIT: Actually I found out in Grade 10 that ironically they had decided to assign those books as standard reading in normal Academic-Level Grade 9 English courses after the ISP courses were introduced. I guess they wanted to put fresh new books to good use. =P

My best was by far Catch-22. The fact that it said something to me back then and I can still find new and interesting things in it even now (on my like 5th read) tells me that I will never tire of it.

I don't know why the hate for gatsby, it's not the greatest, sure, but I always felt it had some particularly good metaphors and imagery (though my teacher made such a big deal over the damn billboard back in the day, it wasn't THAT important).

I also hated Separate peace back in the day, but i can't remember it that well so I think I should give it a second chance some time. All I remember was an extremely dry and tedious novel that I just gave up on.

Oh yeah... I loved the Canterbury Tales. The only reason I even thought about those, though, is that I read Hyperion recently. Good stuff.

Best books I've read so far were Lord of the Flies, Huckleberry Finn, Killer Angels, and The Road (which is actually a fairly recent novel.) The worst, by far, was Jane Eyre, with Beloved in a close second.

The Catcher in the Rye is not only the best book I read in High School but my favorite book of all time.
Really? That's great, because that's the next book on our list.

The Hobbit
Lord of The Flies

and when I got to do a book report on Watchmen (which took like 4 hours of convincing my teacher that it wasn't just your typical comic book) I ended up getting an A :D

Definitely 1984 and Animal Farm. Those two were great books, and made up for me having to wade through the overly-thick Charles Dickens. Why he needs two pages to say what most writers can say in three sentences or so eludes me.
