Do you know what your insurance covered? It might not have covered drop or water damage, still if it smelt like burning plastic thats not something you did so they should replace it.

I rarely shop there, so I've never actually had a problem, but that sucks. You should have let them call the police. There was no way you were getting out of that situation being the one in trouble.

If you bought insurance and they refused to help you than you should get a lawyer and sue these assholes. They have violated a legal contract.

I recently bought a new TV. Filled with glee I realized that the TV was emitting a smell of burning plastic. Even though I insured it, they refused to take it back. As I was leaving, the bottom of the box broke; scratching the side and breaking off bits of plastic. Went back inside, told us that they couldn't (Wouldn't) do anything since it was damaged. Called Corporate, told us to go back to return it. Went back, I asked to return it. THEY THREATENED TO CALL THE FUCKING POLICE.

So, that is why I will never return to the Best Buy in Medford, Oregon.
You should have waited for the police, they did the work for you. Case closed.

Their not going to accept a return unless theres actually an issue having the smell of burning plastic isn't an actual problem with the tv, stores get ripped off all of the time by people returning items that they either damaged or simply wanted there money back. But I can also see how the OP would feel as if he's being dealt a raw deal with the whole situation and it should have been handled differently ie explaining as there wasn't anything wrong with th tv it couldn't be returned or really any explanation at all. I've never had any issues with my Best Buy and I'll keep shopping there until I do, and I'll take others horror stories with a grain of salt since no one talks about the many times they shopped at x store and everything went fine.

So, lemme get this right, you called Best Buy corporate and they told you to return it to the store, then the store refused to take it back ?

Call corporate again and make a formal complaint, preferably with the name of the manager who refused the exchange.

Nearly all new tvs smell like burning plastic for the first day or two. Your fault for not doing research.

If you threaten to take them to small claims court, they'll offer you a new TV. At least, that's what happened in my situation.

Best buy is a decent store (as far as selection, layout, ect.) so it is unfortunate that it always seems to be staffed entirely by rude incompetent Walmart rejects.

Gotta agree, Best Buy is known to have some pretty shitty customer service, I've made it a rule that should I ever buy anything from best buy to not get a warranty with it because they almost NEVER uphold them. Bought a PSP a few years back with a 2 year extended warranty. The thing had a flib up after about a year and I called em up and they said I had damaged it and voided the warranty. Turns out the PSP battery was just going bad or somthing but they decided that it was my fault for whatever the problem was (I have always kept good care of my PSP its been in a hard case every second I havent been playing it NOR HAVE I OR EVER WILL JAILBREAK IT).

They also decided to rip me off when BF3 came out, I preordered a couple weeks ahead of time and was given a download period of about 4 days before the launch to have it on my computer. Their services were fubar'd and I wasn't able to get my game until about 3 days AFTER launch. Oh and the "Pre-order" bonus apparently didnt count because I didn't download it prior to launch.

Best Buy is a shitty company and I wouldn't shed a tear should they go out of business.

Which really doesn't have anything to do with what I said. My point is that it's more than something bad just randomly happened and now unrelated people owe money.
Yeah, your point that there is an impotent mentality that ends up being self-serving is completely different from what I said.

Oh, wait....
