Just wondering what everyone's opinions are on the subject matter.

For me, it's gotta be Mortal Kombat: Armageddon's system. You got to pick their appearance, their voice, victory pose, ending in arcade mode, and even every combo and special move they would know! You could literally pick how each combo would play out and how everything worked.

Soul Calibur 5 seems pretty good, at least cosmetically. Lots of choice there.

Soul Calibur 3, SC5 is good but SC3 just had some bad-ass looking stuff.

Not to mention almost everything in 5 fucking clips! A huge peeve of mine.
In SCV, you could put penises on your characters and use Voldo's thrust attack.

If that doesn't make it game of the year, then what does?

As much as I'm not a fan of the game itself, and as much as the unique fighting styles were broken beyond repair, Soul Calibur 3 did a great job with it's character creator.

As far as character customization goes, APB (Reloaded) seems to have the most robust system ever devised. You can basically recreate any humanoid face or body imaginable - from Brad Pitt to Chief Wiggum.

But as far as character customization, the Tony Hawk games allowed you to individually customize every face button and special combo.

I had no clue Tony Hawk went that far with it's customization. Which one was that? The latest one I've played was Project 8 on Wii.

i liked SC4's customization. i was able to create a multitude of characters, and i can only expect 5's to be even better.

some games give you a little TOO much freedom and that kinda restricts how many different "good-looking" characters a normal player can make. because half the time they end up kinda ugly due to lack of skill with the creation process. (something that affects me)

Smackdown 2 on the PS1 had a ridiculously robust character creation system, especially for it's time! I managed to create The Hulk and some horribly disfigured shadow creature, shit was awesome.

Plus, the Create a Taunt feature allowed me to have my characters flip over people's heads.

Wrestling games have good Character Creation, its the main reason I buy them (Attitude Era, Monday Night Wars wrestlers).

But for traditional fighting games... not too sure never played on that had a good customization mode.

I 2nd wrestling games as having some of the best character creation systems around. My personal fav is Def Jam fight for NY. To me it had a strong customization elements but it also had a very solid fighting game mechanic. You couldn't max out every stat and there was a rock paper scissors to each of the games fighting styles. Over all a game worth picking up and since its a PS2 game it should be cheap at this point.

I believe all of them, you simply selected what each button combo did, which was daunting considering you could adjust:
A-up,down,left,right,UL,UR,DL,DR
B-up,down,left,right,UL,UR,DL,DR
C-up,down,left,right,UL,UR,DL,DR
D-up,down,left,right,UL,UR,DL,DR

Then there was even more with multiple button combos:

I believe the reason was some of the moves netted more points but were more difficult to stick...I remember Madonna being difficult to land (your legs are at weird angles) and Japan Air being a sinch
