What are in your opinion the best manga or comic artists who make the best looking art?

My pick would go to Kentaro Miura for Berserk. I haven't seen such excessive, almost orgiastic detail in any comics I've ever read. Not only that, but the anatomy and naturality of the characters, the lighting and the wildly imaginative designs displayed in the series never cease to impress. And it seems it just keeps getting more and more intricate. Simply everything in the series looks incredible, and since it keeps the manga tropes fairly in check, it's IMO closer to more realistic western art than typical manga. Just look at this

That alone could serve as a painting, but it's just one splash page in a series that has gone on for more than two decades. The guy's an obsessive-compulsive for sure.

So what are your picks? Provide images if you please, since it's always nicer to look at evidence straight away.

How about Carl Barks, creator of the best Duck stories ever and accidental inventor of manga?

Herge. Not the most intricate looking visuals, but I consider story a part of the artform and those combined to make his work unbeatable.

Miyazaki's work on Nausicaa was pretty phenomenal too, though.

You forgot these two, bartholen.

I also really like Dean Yeagle's stuff. Not really a comicbook guy, but a great cartoonist.

I'm a strong DC and Marvel guy and tend to stay away from manga in general, but I must admit: Hirohoki Araki is pretty amazing. He tells an awesome story, has fun with it, has an incredibly detailed art style, and makes gay jokes and a female character that teaches you the multiple ways to flip someone off from multiple countries. This guy is awesome, to put it bluntly: this manga is the exact opposite of every other manga outta Japan. The main character is never a little kid usually a dude that's 6''5 and built and they fight with monster made from their souls, and the monsters are named after American rock bands.

I'm not joking by the way, the stands these guys use are named after American rock bands

Just look at these guys:

Foo Fighters

Green Day

Stairway to Heaven

It doesn't matter whether you support one style or the other but you have to admit that this guys is pretty good. And creative too.

Lilith Black does a lot of Dragon Age fiction. She's an Italian-based artist. Very good at blending traditional panels with manga emoticons. Worth catching if you're a DA2 or DAO fan. http://browse.deviantart.com/?q=lilithblack

Eiichiro Oda would be the one for me, his style just hits me on levels I cant really explain and everything he does is just wonderful to both read and see,

While JJBA is probably my favourite manga of all time, the art tends to fluctuate a little bit. Story quality and such is nearly always freaking awesome but the art for Part 1 and 4 could use some work.

OT: Oh! Great for Manga (because despite the fact he's a giant perv that guy can DRAW) and... I kinda feel Jack Kirby but for modern ones, Tony S Daniel did my favourite art for Superman ever in Action Comics 18 so guess he's getting it (even if he can't write for s***)

I've always been a fan of classic Jack Kirby if we're talking super hero comics.

Pro tip. ANY SEINEN MANGA HAS GREAT ART.

However, my favorite is probably Takehiko Inoue

From his environment:

To his characters

To his watercolors

Takehiko Inoue is probably the best manga artist out there.

Well that was because Araki got JJBA from a shonen to a seinen. When he was with shonen he was on a tight deadline but once he hit seinen his art just exploded. Part V was when JJBA became seinen, right? That's my theory.

There is no best ones, each manga/comic has it's personality and the issue is if the drawings fit it or not.

Good ones IMO would be:

Matsumoto Taiyou is however particulary impressive in any work. This is not an inclusive list, just some names that popped into my head, can keep doing this for ages as there are a grat deal of artist which just happened to deliver amazing works that perfectly fitted the manga/comic.

Aw man, now I feel bad for forgetting Blacksad altogether. Those comics are basically hot, spicy sex for your eyes. Fucking gorgeous.

Hiromu Arakawa is one of my favourites. She's the author/artist behind FMA and Silver Spoon. She can do detailed and cartooney and have it all flow together.

I never pay attention to the artist names, to my ultimate detriment. I have enjoyed the stylized comic books from dark horse on the Star Wars franchise though I can never remember the names of those who make them.

I particularly like anything like say... The World God Only Knows or Medaka Box. Plus I love the stories of both those mangas. Medaka Box goes through one of the best genre shifts ever made, from sort of ok highschool comedy thing to super amazing shounen battle thing with great new characters, abilities and plot developments.

TWGOK is still going stronk in general.

I don't really memorise artists for some reason. I could identify a CLAMP anime design in half a second but that's about it. I basically just keep up with the artists of Death Note. Maybe they've done something else after Bakuman ended? I should probably check or something, I 'unno.

Art with proper dark, defined lines in general I suppose. Less is more sort of thing.

I can't stand things that are so shaded it's like the artist sketched it out on a notepad and just turned it in without bolding anything. It's all pencil lines and fuck all else.

Thankfully most of that is in Shoujo manga which I don't read because I am a manly man who reads about fighting and swords and stuff

I also like Future Diary because fuck bitches nothing is more enjoyable than watching the world's best Yandere Yandere-ing all over the place like the lunatic Yandere she is.

I just can't watch Cowboy Bebop no matter how hard I try simply for the art being so out of my tastes. Also a cowboy western in SPACE isn't really what I would call interesting for some reason.

Oh and I did like Scott Pilgrim's art. Even though it's not technically "manga" in the specific sense but it still has a manga style.
