We already have a topic for the worst, but what is the best. I ask you to set aside all fanboyism and bias against or for a company and think this through objectively and state why.

I don't know... the PS2 had some really AWESOME games, but that was more the games than the console. But personally I'm gonna go with PS2.

The developer console!

Name me another one that's been used so consistently by so many for so long. It is truly a benefit to all gamers.

I think it's a tie between the SNES and the PS2. Both had huge, successful and diverse game libraries. At a pinch I'd say the PS2 cos it's my favourite of all time and I'm pretty sure it's the best selling home console ever (excluding handhelds)

NES by virtue of saving console gaming after the gaming crash

or maybe the N64. that thing was a processing monster at the time

I think that the most elegantly designed hardware just might be the ZX Spectrum but that isn't a console exactly.

The SNES was pretty special for the time. Good looking sprite graphics combined with the super fx 3d chip that could run games like Star Fox. PS2 was special due to the support it got from developers and not due to the hardware. N64 is an interesting one. It's hard to explain how good Super Mario 64 looked when it was released.

Again, I think it is between the SNES and PS2. You would be hard pressed to not know anyone who had one. Someone you know most likely owned one or both of these. Probably multiple people you know.

Hmm...well, once upon a time, I would have proclaimed the SNES the greatest console. However, this was soley due to its library of games...

Games such as Super Mario World, Super Metroid, Super Castlevania IV, Kirby Super Star, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Final Fantasy IV, Donkey Kong Country Trilogy, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, F-zero, Gradius 3, super mario kart, Contra 3, ActRaiser, Secret of Mana

all of which appear on the Virtual Console. Along with classics from many other consoles.

So...yeah, with the Wii having digital access to an amazing backlog, full backwards compatability with the gamecube, and a ton of great games, it is my favorite console...even with its mountain of third-party crap doing their best to hide the good stuff

Probably the PS2 for most. I'd say the 360 were it not for the simple fact that I've gone through three of them. My 25 year old NES still works and it's logged more hours than all my 360's combined.

PS2 - sold for an incredibly long time, plays PS1 games, has a huge library to rely on, and a pretty diverse one too.
