I have presently desired to reminisce and partake in an old game of Halo: Combat Evolved, the task is simple; purchase a copy and install the game on windows 7 64 bit (check), use a cable to connect the computer into my television for a console like experience (check), connect a game controller to use instead of a keyboard and mouse (no...). You see my difficulty has been deciding what route to take towards my console grubby game-pad aspiring control, I wish for all of you Escapist chums to rack your brains and deliver unto me your opinions -with references hopefully- of which controller to purchase and what drivers I should install if I purchase such things.

Thank you for taking the time to read this spiel I am anxiously awaiting your responses.

Halo actually doesn't work that well with a mouse and keyboard, it's the only PC FPS that I actually prefer to play with a 360 controller, as they were designed with the original xbox controllers in mind i believe.

Note that I do play about 10 different PC FPSs with mouse and keyboard, yet I just can't bring myself to play halo with it.

Go to a store, and hold a 360 controller, then hold a PS3 and see what one you like more. Buy that one. 360 is already compatible with windows I believe and if you are one of the few that like the PS3 one more get motionjoy (google it).

I guess if you really want to do this for yourself, I'd advise an xbawks controller for an xbawks game. But I have no idea why someone who has the option of mouse+keyboard for a shooter would pick anything else.

depends what you're looking for in a gamepad, but you can find pretty much anything you want in USB.

just browse through this google image search [https://www.google.com/search?aq=f&client=ubuntu&channel=cs&q=usb+gamepad&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=yhH7T6DpH8HYqAHB08CLCQ&biw=1440&bih=757&sei=zRH7T7uhA4PNqgGN5ZSLCQ] to see what I mean.

Assuming you want the XBox style of controller, I came across
this
in that image search. A quick re-googling of it brings me here [https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ds=i&pq=usb+gamepad&cp=6&gs_id=n&xhr=t&q=xeox%20gamepad&um=1&safe=off&client=ubuntu&channel=cs&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.r_qf.,cf.osb&biw=1440&bih=757&wrapid=tljp1341854158866010&ie=UTF-8&tbo=u&tbm=shop&source=og&sa=N&tab=if&ei=2hP7T6yTH8jOrQGj3LWLCQ].

Not sure what country you live in and all, but I'm sure you can find one of those for fairly cheap. This is all assuming you don't already have an XBox controller lying around that you can just plug right in.

Have fun, and remember to turn on auto-aim, Mr. Thumbsticks. PC shooters tend to be less forgiving.

360 controller, best way forward. If you're running Windows its fantastic - plug it in and you're good to go. :)

360 and Dualshock 3. You can connect a PS3 controller with USB and fool the computer into thinking that its a Xbox controller.

I am one of the most ardent defenders of the Keyboard/Mouse combo in the land and even I will still point him to a 360 controller for that game. It's one of those shitty ports where the mouse control is right up there with herding cats with two boiled noodles.
Gotcha - yeah, then definitely xbawks controller. Halo is probably one of the best console shooters control-wise anyway.

Halo is an FPS. The best control scheme for an F/TPS is mouse and keyboard. Ergo, mouse and keyboard.

Okay this helps an awful lot, also for further understanding I do not own either an original Xbox or a 360 and a friend had given me his copy of Halo : Combat Evolved for PC and I have an easier and more reminiscent time playing it with a controller. I did attempt to use motionjoy to get my PS3 controllers to work without avail, and I shall consider buying a 360 controller since the other alternates suggested aren't too easy to buy in store - being in Australia.

Thank you very much everybody.

For an fps I would say mouse and keyboard but since your asking about controllers i have to go with the 360 controller as most if not all AAA games for the past 3-4 years have preconfigured button layouts for that controller (I have no idea if the ps3 controllers does).

The 360 controller is my favourite anyway for feel, compatibility and also price wise, there only £15 for the wire version.
